
A night at the top spot on Ireland's 100 greatest places to stay
Ballyfin Demesne in Co Laois topped the Sunday Times Great Places to Stay 2025 list, fending off contemporary hotels, extensive resorts and luxe spa getaways. With properties around the country constantly upping their game and investing millions into high-tech amenities and luxe experiences, what makes this country house hotel so special? I checked in to get a taste of its modern take on Regency hospitality.

On arrival, I gave my name at the electric gates and drove along a meandering path through park lands. The regal house, and the glittering manmade lake opposite, came into view and I spotted staff members lined up outside the building. They had dropped everything for the customary welcome ritual.
That sounds like it should be awkward, but the staff, in this instance all locals, are down to earth, warm and efficient. One attendant walked swiftly to the boot to retrieve my bag, and another gestured for me to follow her into the building. The third, the man who opened the driver's door and took my keys, casually asked if I'd like the car valeted during my stay. Is that possible, I asked? The response, is that 'anything is possible'. A big promise, but it's easy to imagine that at Ballyfin they deliver on that.
We all know of some of the property's famous guests — George and Amal Clooney once booked out the property for a family reunion, and Kim Kardashian and Kanye West stopped here on their honeymoon. It's no surprise that this lavish hotel has attracted such big names, in what has been a relatively short time in the hospitality industry.

Above the entrance is the coat of arms of the Coote family, the original owners. The house was built in the 1820s for Sir Charles Coote by the Irish architects Sir Richard and William Morrison. Portraits of members of the Coote family, who lived here for 100 years, posing in their fine Regency era frills and coats, line the stairway. The estate was then sold to the Patrician Brothers, who ran a school there for much of the 20th century.
By 2002, the 3,250 sq m home needed extensive renovation work, and was purchased by the Chicago-based businessman Fred Krehbiel and his wife, Kay, who was from Kerry. The art lovers and collectors spent nine years restoring the property, including its intricate marquetry floors and gilded plaster ceilings, and seeking out pieces once owned by the Cootes, before opening it as a hotel in 2011. Now owned by Krehbiel's sons Liam and Jay, they are keen to preserve the future of their parents' passion project.
As a guest, it was impossible not to gaze around agog, from the grand saloon, with its plaster columns, to the 24-metre library, a room that runs the length of the southside of the building and is the perfect spot to order tea and scones. Afterwards, an afternoon of traditional country pursuits awaited. When I met the clay pigeon shooting instructor, I asked him how long he had worked there, and he smiled. He was initially a bricklayer there when Ballyfin was being transformed into a hotel, but not only that, he had attended the school as a boy, and described how on their first day, the pupils were brought through the grand entryway, before making their way to the school building, which is now the hotel's laundry. The local staff, and their reverence for the place and what it has become, really stands out.
I astounded myself and the instructor, when after two warm-up shots (or were they warning shots?), I managed to hit six clays in a row. And how best to unwind after successfully wielding a 20-gauge shotgun? Checking into a room as beautiful as the Westmeath, where an ornate French bed stands in the centre. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the portrait above the marble fireplace depicts a neighbour of sorts; the woman was Marianne Jeffreys, who was born at Blarney Castle, in Co Cork, in the 18th century, and went on to become the Countess of Westmeath. My first job was at the Blarney Castle Hotel, as a cleaner. Now look where Marianne and I found ourselves.

Having settled into my newly discovered home from home, I went downstairs for a glass of champagne in the gold drawing room before dinner by the Michelin-starred chef Richard Picard-Edwards in the state dining room. A starter of west Cork crab with mackerel, gooseberry and buttermilk, followed by turbot with cavolo nero and turnip from the kitchen garden was impeccable, as was the almond dacquoise and orange ganache for dessert.
That was something to experience, and if staying in Ballyfin isn't in the budget, it's worth noting that since last summer, non-resident guests can make dinner reservations. This means that even more people can appreciate the splendour of Ballyfin, and perhaps find their own piece of impeccably preserved history there to connect with. 10-year passport rule: is yours valid for EU travel?
One of the fastest ways to kill your pre-holiday good mood is to find out shortly before you fly — or worse, at the airport itself — that your travel documents aren't in order. However, some visitors to EU destinations are still falling foul of post-Brexit checks, because having an unexpired passport doesn't automatically mean that it will be deemed valid abroad. So what do you need to watch out for if you're planning a trip to Europe? You'll need to check that your passport is less than ten years old on arrival, and has an expiry date at least three months after the end of your stay. The only exception is if you're visiting Ireland, part of the Common Travel Area with the UK. These rules also apply to four non-EU countries — Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland — which, together with 25 of the 27 EU countries, form the Schengen Area. As Schengen nations have an open border with each other, they also share the same passport validity requirements. So if you're planning a trip to an EU country or one of the four mentioned above, here's what you need to know. EU countries require travellers from 'third countries' — anywhere outside the EU — to have a passport that's less than ten years old on the day of their entry to a member state and valid for at least three months after the end of their stay. Since the UK left the EU, this rule has applied to British passport holders. Previously the UK Passport Office allowed up to nine months remaining on an old passport to be carried over to a new one. This meant that some passports issued before October 2018 had more than ten years of validity. After Brexit, EU countries no longer recognised this extension, which is why passports now need to be less than ten years old. The only exception to this rule is Ireland. This is because Ireland is part of the Common Travel Area with the UK so the rules are slightly different. If you are travelling to multiple destinations, check that your passport and other documents cover all stops on your itinerary. For example, if you are travelling to a country where your passport needs to be valid for the duration of your stay, but you have a stopover in the EU where the above rules apply (or somewhere such as Dubai or Singapore, which require at least six months' validity remaining after arrival), then you will also need to make sure your passport meets these requirements. Speak to your travel operator if in any doubt. A valid passport is essential for travelling outside the UK. For travel to the EU and European Free Trade Association (Efta) countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), it needs to be less than ten years old when you enter the country and have at least three months left on it after you intend to leave. The only exception is if you are going to Ireland, where you can travel until your passport expires. To visit Ireland, British nationals don't actually need a passport — although airlines typically insist on it — and can use another form of official photo ID. Depending on where you are travelling to, for what purpose and for how long, you may also need to get a visa. After Brexit, British citizens are permitted to stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days out of 180 for leisure visits, after which a visa or other permit may be needed. You will need to check the specific entry requirements for each individual country you're visiting. From late 2026, you will also need to successfully apply for an Etias visa waiver before you travel. • When does the Etias scheme start for UK travellers? If you are planning to drive or hire a car, you will need to take your driving licence, and in some cases an international driving permit (IDP). Those taking their own cars across a border will also need relevant insurance and vehicle registration details, as well as a UK sticker displayed prominently on the vehicle. There may be additional requirements depending on your destination. • Driving in Europe: all the requirements and rules you need to know When travelling to EU countries, you may want to apply for and take your UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). This free benefit replaced the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for most UK nationals after Brexit. It entitles you to medically necessary public health care, which will either be free or subsidised. In some cases, having the card with you is a requisite for ensuring your travel insurance is valid. In most cases, you will need your passport to travel to Europe. Ireland is the only exception, although the government still advises taking your passport with you, and airlines will typically insist on it. If you have lost your passport while abroad, you may be able to apply for an emergency travel document. These cost £125 and you may need to attend a British embassy in person after you have applied online. The document contains your exact itinerary, and if you decide to change your plans at the last minute you will need to pay for a new one. If your passport is damaged, you should replace it before you travel, as it may not be considered valid. HM Passport Office consider a passport damaged if any details cannot be read, there are rips, cuts, holes (including the cover) or missing pages, the cover is coming away, or there are stains such as water damage. In theory, you could travel with an expired passport between certain countries in Europe, because land borders within the Schengen Area are open and ID checks are only carried out in exceptional circumstances. For example, the Spanish government has said that its citizens may enter the country on an expired passport or ID card after its authenticity has been checked; however, a valid travel document is still required to leave the country via an external border. In the case of the UK, your passport will be checked at the relevant border controls and you will need to make sure it's valid for travel. Like most countries in the EU, Spain requires those travelling on a British passport to have at least three months remaining after the date you plan to leave. Rathfriland literary festival celebrates Brontës' County Down link
The first literary festival to take place in Rathfriland will this weekend celebrate the Brontë family's connection to the Literary Festival will feature authors, poets and music in celebration of the area's contributions to the arts, both past and famous sisters' father was a clergyman in nearby Drumballyroney before moving to Ada Elliot told BBC News NI he had been "perhaps been overlooked" in the telling of the Brontë family story. 'Rathfriland is a spectacular area' Patrick Brontë was born Patrick Brunty in County Down in March 1777 - St Patrick's Day - explaining his first name - and changed his surname when he moved to England. Three of his children - Charlotte, Emily and Anne - became authors, with Charlotte writing Jane Eyre and Emily writing Wuthering Heights - both gothic romances set in the north of England, with strong psychological components. Anne Brontë wrote The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which explores themes of social duty and the place of women in the Victorian world."Although the girls are not part of Rathfriland he (Patrick) has a long history here," festival organiser Ada Elliott told BBC Radio Ulster's Your Place and Mine programme."Rathfriland is a spectacular area. We're very proud of it and that's why we want to celebrate it." Historians through the years have speculated on whether Patrick Brontë's Irish roots might have influenced his daughter's writing, and even whether they might have had Irish Down celebrates those links. A signposted Brontë interpretive trail runs for 10 miles from an interpretive centre around Rathfriland and its surrounds, allowing visitors to drive through the area and imagine how the windswept Mournes might have influenced the father of girls whose writing was mystical, passionate and local historian Uel Wright believes more could be done."If you come here you cannot fail to see Brontë signs everywhere," he told BBC News NI. "Roads, homeland, library, nursery, steakhouse - all Brontë." Despite the wave of enthusiasm that led to those celebrations in the 1990s, the stone cottage where Patrick Brontë was born lies in ruins. Mr Wright hopes public money can be used to restore it and celebrate the link."My theory is that unless there's another generation of interest and enthusiasm to keep the Irish Brontë heritage alive, we're going to lose something very important." Mr Wright's great-great-uncle William Wright wrote a book on the Brontës in Wright believes those stories were based in oral history, in which his ancestor had a great interest, and he will examine them at a talk on Sunday in the schoolhouse where Patrick Brontë taught. "The whole Irish part of the story has gone out of fashion but with the upsurge of interest in oral history let's say - this is what we have in Ireland," he says."Let's celebrate it."Later on Sunday author Martina Devlin, who has written a novel based on Charlotte Brontë's honeymoon in County Offaly, will speak in the original church where he preached before leaving Ireland in 1802. The Rath Literary Festival started on Friday and runs until Sunday. It has been organised by the Rathfriland Women's Institute, Rathfriland Regeneration and Hilltown Community Association and will feature music and a one-woman show imagining the sisters in the modern day, by Pauline will read poems inspired by 19th Century women caught up in the criminal justice and mental health systems, and a walking tour will tell the stories of famous Rathfriland residents down the years. The festival was the brainchild of Margot Groves, who said: "We are delighted to be bringing such a wealth of talent to Rathfriland. There is something for everyone to enjoy no matter which genre they prefer." And did the Brontë sisters have Irish accents?"It wouldn't be surprising," says Uel Wright."Patrick never made great pretensions with his accent."I don't suppose we'll ever really know but it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility."
