S'wak sees rising interest from Japanese nationals under S-MM2H programme, says Abd Karim
Abdul Karim speaks to reporters after launching the Leo Forum 2025. – Photo by Roystein Emmor KUCHING (June 5): Sarawak is seeing growing interest from Japanese nationals looking to relocate to the state under the Sarawak-Malaysia My Second Home (S-MM2H) programme, said State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. He noted that tourist arrivals from Japan have increased, with several individuals expressing a desire to settle in Sarawak for the long term. 'At present, there are no formal proposals to offer residency similar to what Singapore or Brunei provide. 'However, the S-MM2H programme is open to them, and it continues to attract strong interest, particularly from China,' he told reporters after launching the Leo Forum 2025 at the Raia Hotel and Convention Centre here today. When asked if the state plans to introduce new initiatives to attract more Japanese nationals, Abdul Karim said no such discussions have taken place yet. 'We've already opened a Trade and Tourism Office in Singapore, one in Brunei Darussalam, and another one is being planned in the city of Pontianak, West Kalimantan. 'The state government also has a proposal, if I'm not mistaken, to open one in Abu Dhabi. 'But if there is a need to open in other cities or countries, we can consider it,' he said. He said many applicants under the programme are senior citizens drawn by Sarawak's reputation as a safe and peaceful destination with quality medical care. 'Sarawak is seen as a safe place with good medical facilities, which is important for elderly applicants. 'Our strong healthcare system and overall safety are major pull factors,' he added. Abdul Karim also highlighted that some Korean families have begun enrolling their children in English-language schools such as Tunku Putra, with parents applying under the same programme. Nearly 600 S-MM2H applications were approved in 2024, and a similar figure is expected for this year, he added. Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah Japanese lead s-mm2h

Second Home Plan makes MM2H debut, eyes global market
KUALA LUMPUR: Newly established Second Home Plan (MM2H) Sdn Bhd has made its debut in the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) space, offering end-to-end relocation services for foreign nationals seeking long-term residency in the country. Managing director June Chang said the company provides a full suite of support covering healthcare, education, property, legal, financial, and lifestyle needs. "The company's mission is not only to facilitate the process of moving to Malaysia but also to ensure that applicants feel truly at home. "A second home should not mean second place," he said at the launch ceremony officiated by chairman Tunku Kamariah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Sultan Iskandar. The MM2H programme is a government initiative aimed at attracting foreign investment, stimulating tourism, and driving economic growth. It is promoted by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, while visa approvals are handled by the Immigration Department under the Home Affairs Ministry. Second Home Plan chief executive officer SP Chang said the company aims to be Southeast Asia's most trusted MM2H platform. "We are prepared to serve applicants from all corners of the world—China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Europe, America, Dubai, Bangladesh, and many more. "Wherever there is aspiration to live in Malaysia, we stand ready with structure, service, and sincerity," he said. The launch also saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Second Home Plan and the Zhejiang China and Malaysia Overseas Friendship Organisation to promote MM2H in Zhejiang and its international networks. Introduced in 2002 as a successor to the 1996 Silver Hair programme, MM2H offers long-term residency to foreign nationals. The programme was recently revamped into four categories, namely Silver, Gold, Platinum and Special Economic or Financial Zone, each with distinct requirements. Applicants must be at least 25 years old and place a fixed deposit in a Malaysian bank ranging from US$32,000 to US$1 million, depending on the category. Under the scheme, visas are valid for five to 20 years, with only the Platinum category allowing employment or business participation. Participants are also required to spend at least 90 cumulative days in Malaysia each year. Applications must be submitted through licensed MM2H agents and are subject to background checks, health screenings and valid medical insurance coverage.

Velesto Energy profit up despite dip in revenue
The group reported first-quarter net profit growth of 12.4% year-on-year to RM52.6mil. PETALING JAYA: Velesto Energy Bhd (VEB) maintains cautious optimism about its outlook for 2025, confident that with Naga 2, Naga 4 and Naga 6 contracted until the first quarter of 2026 (1Q26), this ensures ongoing operations and stability in rig utilisation. Releasing its results for 1Q25 ended March 31, 2025, yesterday, the group reported a net profit growth of 12.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM52.6mil, despite revenue sinking 33.6% to RM224.6mil. This translates to an earnings per share of 0.64 sen. VEB attributed the lower turnover to completion of the i-RDC project and lower rig utilisation in 1Q25, while pointing to lower finance costs and depreciation during the quarter as factors behind the improved profitability. Compared to the preceding quarter ended Dec 31, 2024, net profit edged lower by 4.6% from RM55.2mil. This is as turnover decreased 18.6% from RM276.1mil.
