Blount County district attorney discusses arrests of Jefferson County School employees

Yahoo25-02-2025
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — According to the Blount County Sheriff's Office, two Jefferson County Schools employees have been arrested since December in child sex stings.
The arrests have raised questions about the hiring process for those who work closely with children.
CBS 42 News spoke with Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey, who is prosecuting these cases. She said that when it comes to these kinds of crimes, it's nearly impossible to identify those who will commit them before they do.
'I hate to say it like this, but you can't fix stupid,' Casey said. 'If people are going to make stupid decisions, sometimes there's things you can't do to fix stupid.'
According to the BCSO, Christopher Thompson and James Mitchell were trying to pay who they believed were minors for sexual activity. There arrests were caught on the camera by 'TakeDown with Chris Hansen' on TruBlu.
Hansen said he believes the district should implement stricter hiring policies.
'Clearly two in a matter of two sting operations back-to-back indicates more needs to be done,' Hansen said.

'We find people all the time who have never been caught before, and I find it hard to believe this is their first time acting out in our sting,' Hansen continued. 'So it happens. Men get away with it. Predators get away with it, so I think there needs to be more done in terms of psychological screening.'
CBS 42 reached out to Jefferson County Schools about its hiring process and received the following statement:
All potential candidates for employment are required to submit to a criminal history background check through the ALSDE, which includes a fingerprint check by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The district does not recommend individuals for hire unless their background status on the ALSDE portal at the time of recommendation is suitable for the position in which they are being recommended for. If an appropriate background status is not available through the ALSDE portal, the individual will not be recommended for hire.

According to Casey, these two men are out on bond. Mitchell's case has been reviewed by a grand jury and is proceeding to circuit court. Thompson's case is pending a first call hearing.
'The number one priority we have is keeping children safe and keeping family safe, and that's what we are going to do in all our cases, especially in these two situations,' Casey said.
Jefferson County Schools stated Mitchell is on administrative leave, while Christopher Thompson has resigned from his position with the school system.

Police search for suspect who shot woman walking with child near Louisville school bus stop

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville police were searching for a suspect who fatally shot a woman walking with her child near a bus stop where school children were gathered. The shooting around 8 a.m. EDT on Wednesday and was near several children, Louisville Police Chief Paul Humphrey said. Officers received tips from witnesses that led to the questioning of a 15-year-old boy shortly after the shooting, but he was later released after it was deemed he was not the shooter, Humphrey said. Humphrey called on the community to come forward with information about the suspect, who remained at large Thursday. Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Brian Yearwood said the shooting was 'an unspeakable act of violence ... at a bus stop witnessed by innocent young children.' 'This is an outrage. It's unacceptable. No one should be scared to stand at a bus stop,' Yearwood said. Officials have not identified the woman. At a Thursday news conference, relatives said she was walking her child to the school bus stop. The same neighborhood area near downtown Louisville was the scene of another morning shooting last week when a suspect fired a gun and fled, Louisville police said. School children were in the area for the first day of school and could hear the gunshots, police said in a media release. Humphrey said Wednesday that police had monitored the bus stop after last week's shooting, but were not there when Wednesday's shooting occurred. 'Clearly I wish they'd have been there,' Humphrey said. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said he was thankful for the cooperation of people at the bus stop who provided information to police. 'That's what we need to see more of in our city, this collaboration, working together, the police department and the community,' he said. 'The police cannot make our city safe alone.'

Carriage horse dies on NYC street in horrifying scene — nearly three years to the day distressed Ryder collapsed

Lady was 15 years old, but couldn't survive six weeks on New York's streets. Lady, a Central Park carriage horse, collapsed on a Hell's Kitchen street and was 'dead when she hit the ground' Tuesday — almost three years to the day since a horse named Ryder fell, and later had to be put down, sparking outrage across the city. 'I couldn't help but see its muscles jiggled, and its tongue was rolling around on the ground,' bystander Alex, 26, who was walking to get a smoothie when she saw a crowd gathering around the collapsed horse on 11th Avenue, told The Post. 5 Lady, a Central Park carriage horse, was 15 years old. Obtained by the NY Post 'It looked completely dead, I mean, its eyes were open and unblinking the whole time.' Lady, 15, was new to the city and had only done two rides this afternoon, according to Christina Hansen, a spokesperson for Big Apple horse carriage drivers. 'She was dead when she hit the ground,' said Hansen, who thinks Lady may have had an aneurysm or a heart attack. 5 Lady was seen down at the intersection of West 51st Street and 10th Avenue. X/NYCLASS At first, the driver attempted to revive Lady, and deli workers brought out buckets of water, said Bernadette Edwards, 38, who worked at the deli across the street. By the time Alex walked down, other horse carriage drivers from the stables around the corner were trying to lug Lady's carcass into a trailer. 'I was just like watching (Lady's) mane dragging on the ground, and there were some fluids coming out of it onto the ramp into the trailer,' Alex said of the horrifying scene. 5 Hansen said that Lady 'was dead when she hit the ground.' Obtained by the NY Post 'It felt like they were really desperate to remove it.' Police arrived, and Lady was driven to the stables for carriage horses around the block. Her body will eventually be transported to Cornell University for a post-mortem exam. 'Horses are collapsing, suffering, and dying over and over again — and nothing changes,' said Edita Birnkrant, the executive director of New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets. 5 Lady's body will be transported to Cornell University for a post-mortem exam. Obtained by the NY Post 5 The driver attempted to revive Lady at first. X/NYCLASS Hansen insisted that Lady was not overworked before her death. The horse was recently purchased from Pennsylvania and had passed her veterinary exam on June 12 with flying colours. 'We have some of the strictest carriage regulations in the country,' Hansen said. 'We're under constant scrutiny because we work in public, and now there are smartphones.' Earlier this summer, carriage driver Ian McKeever was acquitted on charges of animal abuse in the death of his horse, Ryder, whose public collapse in Midtown triggered three years of controversy and a city council bill, Ryder's Law, which, if passed, would ban carriages in Central Park. 'By blocking Ryder's Law, (lawmakers) are protecting abusers and silencing the public demand for change,' Birnkrant said.
