Stick to budget plan, don't divert Rs 720 crore given for TN projects: Ministry to Southern Railway
CHENNAI: A week after controversy broke out over Southern Railway General Manager RN Singh's letter to the Railway Board suggesting the surrender of Rs 720 crore funds allocated for various new railway projects in Tamil Nadu, the Ministry of Railways on Wednesday instructed the zonal railway to adhere to the original budget plans and not divert the allocated funds. An official statement from Southern Railway on Wednesday said the funds earmarked for Tamil Nadu would be utilised as per the approved budget, in line with the ministry's directive. Earlier, in his letter, the GM had proposed surrendering Rs 720 crore funds for new line projects such as Madurai-Thoothukudi (via Aruppukottai), Tiruvannamalai-Gingee, Erode-Palani, Chennai-Cuddalore, among others, citing various reasons. However, Southern Railway later clarified that the GM's letter was misinterpreted by a section of the media and assured that there would be no change in the fund allocation for the state.

Southern Railway drops plan to cut sleeper coaches on Nellai, Podhigai Express after backlash in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: Following stiff opposition from passengers and several political parties, Southern Railway on Tuesday scrapped its proposal to reduce the number of sleeper coaches on the Chennai-Tirunelveli Nellai Express and the Chennai Egmore-Sengottai Podhigai Express. However, the revised coach compositions for other trains, including the Chennai-Coimbatore Cheran Express and Chennai-Mettupalayam Nilgiris Express, will proceed as planned. An order from the transportation branch of the Madurai railway division confirmed that the existing coach configurations for the Nellai and Podhigai Express trains — comprising 8 sleeper coaches, 5 AC three-tier coaches, 2 AC two-tier coaches, and 1 first-class AC coach — will remain unchanged. The earlier proposal had suggested reducing sleeper coaches from 8 to 7 and increasing the number of AC three-tier coaches from 5 to 6, which stands cancelled, revealed the order issued by the Senior Divisional Operational Manager of the Madurai division. On Tuesday, TNIE published a report highlighting how the proposed change would have reduced the availability of sleeper class berths while increasing the number of higher-fare AC berths. Earlier in the day PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss had strongly criticised the railways' decision to reduce the number of sleeper coaches.

Kerala Railway Projects: CPM MP urges rail minister to reject move to surrender Kerala project funds, ET Infra
Advt Advt Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas has written to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the Railway Board, requesting them to reject the Southern Railway 's move to surrender funds allocated for projects in Kerala in the 2025-26 separate letters addressed to Vaishnaw and the Railway Board chairman, Brittas has expressed strong objection to a proposal submitted by the Southern Railway through a letter dated May 14 to surrender a substantial portion of the funds allocated in the budget for the Financial Year 2025-26 for the Angamali-Sabarimala and Tirunavaya-Guruvayur railway has urged for immediate intervention to discard the Southern Railway's recommendation and ensure continued financial support for these crucial projects in the southern state."These projects, envisaged decades ago, remain unfinished due to persistent institutional apathy, despite their strategic, economic, and socio-cultural significance," Brittas said in his letter addressed to termed the move a blatant continuation of the long-standing neglect of Kerala's railway infrastructure and emphasised that the Angamali-Sabarimala line is of national significance given the magnitude of the Sabarimala pilgrimage , while the Tirunavaya-Guruvayur line is vital for improving connectivity in northern pointed out that the Southern Railway has also proposed surrendering funds for projects in Tamil Nadu, revealing a broader pattern of bureaucratic disregard for long-standing railway demands in south India."The decision to surrender funds, ironically justified by citing a 'frozen' status, amounts to a perpetuation of neglect rather than an attempt at rectification. It is pertinent to note that the very status of these projects as 'frozen' is symptomatic of the broader pattern of railway discrimination against Kerala, where critical demands are either delayed or denied," the Left leader requested the minister to issue directions to the board to reject the Southern Railway's recommendations in this regard and instruct the authorities concerned to ensure the continuation, acceleration and proper funding of these long-pending projects."Kerala cannot be expected to wait indefinitely for basic rail infrastructure," he said.
