French envoy lauds Kuwait-France relations at National Day reception
The visit is a milestone in the history of relations between the two countries -- spanning nearly 65 years, and its 65th anniversary will be celebrated in 2026. France and Kuwait are linked by a historic alliance based on trust and mutual respect.' He pointed out that political cooperation witnessed a strong boost over the past year, particularly with the visit of the French Foreign Minister to Kuwait last April, to enhance coordination on regional crises, at a time Kuwait occupies the presidency of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). He said 'France and Kuwait share a commitment to multilateralism, peace and international solidarity. We are pleased to work together on development and humanitarian projects that reflect Kuwait's exemplary humanitarian commitment.' He pointed out that France has been a steadfast ally of Kuwait since the Iraqi invasion, as their armies fought side by side in the liberation war. He said the 1992 defense agreement with Kuwait was the first such agreement signed by Paris in the Gulf. He added that joint training exercises such as 'Pearl of the West' and 'Arab Breeze' embody the vitality of defense cooperation between the two countries. He also praised the training programs received by Kuwaiti officers in France. He cited the growing interest of French companies in investing in Kuwait in light of the 'Kuwait 2035' vision; particularly in the fields of transportation, sustainable energy, smart cities and health.
He also welcomed the growing interest of Kuwaiti investors in development opportunities in France, specifically in the fields of artificial intelligence and technology. He stressed that France has become the primary destination for foreign investment in Europe. He confirmed that France remains the primary destination for Kuwaiti tourism within the Schengen Area, praising the country's active Francophone community. He reviewed the most prominent events held during Francophonie Month; such as concerts, film screenings, poetry evenings and debates; commending His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al- Mohammad Al-Sabah's support for these activities. He lauded the initiatives to strengthen academic relations, through the establishment of the Sorbonne Association under the patronage of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Nasser Al-Sabah. He said this will provide a platform for exchange between students, researchers and professors. He expressed his hope for increasing the number of Kuwaiti students in France, especially in innovation specializations like artificial intelligence, technology, engineering and management.

France orders release of Lebanese militant after 40 years in prison
Abdallah to be freed if he leaves France • Court cites excessive detention, low risk PARIS: A French appeals court Thursday ordered the release of pro-Palestinian Lebanese militant Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, who has been imprisoned for 40 years for the 1982 killings of two foreign diplomats. Abdallah, 74, is one of the longest serving prisoners in France, where most convicts serving life sentences are freed after less than 30 years. He has been up for release for 25 years, but the United States—a civil party to the case—has consistently opposed him leaving prison. Abdallah was detained in 1984 and sentenced to life in prison in 1987 for his involvement in the murders of US military attache Charles Robert Ray and Zionist diplomat Yacov Barsimantov in Paris. The Lebanese of Maronite Christian heritage has always insisted he is a 'fighter' who battled for the rights of Palestinians and not a 'criminal'. The Paris Appeals Court ordered he be freed from a prison in the south of France next week, on Friday, July 25, on the condition that he leave French territory and never return. It said the length of his detention had been 'disproportionate' and that he no longer represented a danger to the public. Several sources before the hearing said that it was planned for him to be flown to Paris and then to Beirut. Prosecutors can file an appeal with France's highest court, the Court of Cassation, but any such request is not expected to be processed fast enough to halt his release next week. 'Delighted' The detainee's brother, Robert Abdallah, in Lebanon told AFP he was overjoyed. 'We're delighted. I didn't expect the French judiciary to make such a decision nor for him to ever be freed, especially after so many failed requests for release,' he said. 'For once, the French authorities have freed themselves from the Zionist entity and US pressure,' he added. Lebanese authorities have repeatedly said Abdallah should be freed from jail, and had written to the appeals court to say they would organize his return home. Abdallah's lawyer Jean-Louis Chalanset also welcomed the decision, calling it a 'political scandal he was not released earlier'. In November last year, a French court ordered him to be let go conditional on Abdallah leaving France. But France's anti-terror prosecutors, arguing that he had not changed his political views, appealed the decision, which was suspended. A verdict was supposed to have been delivered in February, but the Paris appeals court postponed, saying it was unclear whether Abdallah had proof that he had paid compensation to the plaintiffs, something he has consistently refused to do. 'Past symbol' The court re-examined the latest request for his release last month. During the closed-door hearing, Abdallah's lawyer told the judges that 16,000 euros had been placed in the prisoner's bank account and were at the disposal of civil parties in the case, including the United States, according to several sources who attended. Abdallah, who hails from the north of Lebanon, was wounded as a teenager when the Zionist entity invaded the south of the country in 1978 in the early years of the Lebanese Civil War. As an adult, he founded the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions—LARF, a Marxist pro-Syria and anti- Zionist group that has now been dissolved. After his arrest in 1984, French police discovered submachine guns and transceiver stations in one of his Paris apartments. The appeals court in February however noted that the FARL 'had not committed a violent action since 1984' and that Abdallah 'today represented a past symbol of the Palestinian struggle'. KUWAIT CITY, July 17: A Kuwaiti media delegation went on an incredible journey to China, the land of the future and technology, at the invitation of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Kuwait. The delegation visited three major cities - Shenzhen, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou, where they got a firsthand look at China's rapid technological advancements, particularly in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The first stop was the vibrant city of Shenzhen, characterized by its iconic tall buildings and skyscrapers. The delegation was warmly received by Sun Huaizhong, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Office in Shenzhen, who gave a presentation on the city's 'Smart City' project. Huaizhong emphasized that high-speed internet and artificial intelligence are no longer luxuries but fundamental parts of everyday life. He described Shenzhen as the 'Silicon Valley' of hardware and AI, highlighting the presence of thousands of startups and a dynamic investment environment that offers huge opportunities for Kuwaiti companies. Huaizhong expressed his admiration for Kuwait, indicating that he had read extensively about the country. 'If we can build a bridge of understanding, it would be a great honor,' he said, emphasizing that Shenzhen welcomes all who wish to cooperate, including businessmen, tourists, and students. The delegation's second stop was Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province and one of China's historic 'Seven Ancient Capitals'. The Italian explorer Marco Polo once described it as the most beautiful and luxurious city in the world. Hangzhou's iconic West Lake area includes over 60 cultural heritage sites and countless tourist attractions, renowned for their breathtaking natural beauty. A cruise on the lake turned out to be one of the most captivating experiences. Finally, the delegation visited Guangzhou, China's largest industrial and commercial port, which handles a quarter of the country's foreign trade. Guangzhou is a major hub for industrial and economic activity, known for its diverse sectors including sugar, textiles, iron and steel, paper, cement, agricultural fertilizers, automobiles, chemicals, and manufacturing machinery. Hangzhou Robot City The delegation also visited Hangzhou Shenhao Technology Co. Ltd., founded in 2002. The company specializes in equipment inspection and fault diagnosis using advanced technologies such as sensors, robotics, artificial intelligence, and big data analysis. Serving the industrial hygiene sector, Shenhao provides comprehensive solutions to ensure the safe operation and intelligent maintenance of industrial equipment. A popular market in the heart of Guangzhou The tour also included a visit to the Yongqingfang tourist area in western Guangzhou, located in the Liwan District of Guangdong Province. Located on an area of approximately 760,000 square meters, it is a fourth-class national tourist attraction. Yongqingfang combines tourism, culture, entertainment, and social life, showcasing ancient architecture and traditional arts alongside modern fashion and international entertainment. Shenzhen Drone Taxi Company The delegation visited EHang (Nasdaq: EH), a global pioneer in Urban Air Mobility (UAM) technology that provides safe, autonomous, environmentally friendly, and accessible air transportation for all. SRRSH Hospital As part of the itinerary, the delegation also visited SRRSH Hospital, which was established during China's reform and opening-up period. For its first five years, the hospital was managed in cooperation with Loma Linda University Health in the United States, serving as a pilot project for integrating Western and Chinese approaches to hospital administration, laying the foundation for the hospital's high-standard international management. The hospital was ranked among the 'Tier 1' group of national public hospitals in record time. It continues to lead advancements in several areas, including medical system reform, healthcare services, modern hospital management, minimally invasive medicine, international cooperation, and smart healthcare. It has received an A++ rating and has been ranked among the top one percent of hospitals in China. The project first gained global attention on August 20, 2020, when the developer released a 13-minute alpha gameplay video. Within 24 hours, the video amassed nearly two million views on YouTube and 10 million views on Bilibili. On February 8, 2021, the development team released a new 3-minute trailer, showcasing the game's enemies, mythical creatures, and diverse environments. Later, on August 19, 2021, the team announced that the game had been ported to Unreal Engine 5. The classic novel 'Journey to the West' is considered one of the four most beloved literary works in China. It recounts the trials and tribulations of the renowned monk Tang Sanzang and his three disciples Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing, as they journey to Tianzhu (present-day India) in search of the original Buddhist scriptures from the Buddha's western homeland. Kuwait Army adds Bayraktar TB2 drone to arsenal
KUWAIT CITY, July 17: Defense Minister Sheikh Abdullah Ali Abdullah Al-Sabah said Thursday that the launching of Bayraktar TB2 drone is a manifestation of the commitment of the wise political leadership to support plans for the continuous development and modernization of defense systems, to raise combat readiness and achieve the highest level of security and stability in the country. The General Staff of Kuwaiti Army made the statement during the Bayraktar TB2 drone launching ceremony at Salem Al-Sabah Air Base, under his sponsorship and in his presence. Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army Major General Pilot Sabah Jaber Al- Ahmad Al-Sabah, Air Force Commander Brigadier General Pilot Mohammad Al-Hamdan, Salem Al-Sabah Air Base Commander Brigadier General Pilot Mohammad Al-Rasheed and several Air Force officers warmly welcomed the minister. Defense Minister also pointed out that the launching of drones into service is a qualitative leap in developing the capabilities of the Army; particularly in the areas of surveillance, reconnaissance and information gathering.
