Man posing as Jharkhand doctor gets 30 months jail term
ROURKELA: The court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Sharmistha Padhi on Monday sentenced a 53-year-old man to 30 months of imprisonment for impersonating a doctor.
A habitual offender, Padmanava Mukhi Karua was caught serving in Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) by stealing the identity of a Jharkhand doctor. Impersonating as Dr Ramesh Chandra Jha of adjacent Jharkhand, Karua had got contractual appointment in the dialysis unit of RGH through an outsourcing agency on December 26, 2023. His fake identity got revealed accidentally in June 2024. A resident of Rourkela city, Karua has studied up to Class XII.
According to police, Karua had availed a loan of about Rs 16.5 lakh from a private non-banking financial company by forging the documents of Dr Jha. However, he had failed to change the actual phone number of Dr Jha. The authorities of the finance company called Dr Jha's number and came to know about the fraud. Subsequently, a complaint was filed in RN Pali police station. After his arrest, Karua revealed his original identity and confessed to his crime.

Jaipur: City police Sunday said they are investigating the possibility of a larger exam cheating racket following the arrest of a final-year MBBS student from AIIMS Jodhpur, a medical intern, and an ayurvedic practitioner in connection with the NEET-UG 2020 impersonation case. The accused include Sachin Gaura (22), a student of AIIMS Jodhpur, Ajit Gaura (30), a medical intern at a govt college in Bharatpur, and Subhash Saini (33), an ayurvedic practitioner who has a prior record of cheating and impersonation-related offences. They were arrested on June 6. Police said Sachin allegedly paid Rs 60 lakh to Saini to facilitate the scheme, which helped him bypass the competitive entrance process and secure admission at AIIMS. The admit card for the NEET UG 2020 exam carried Ajit's photograph instead of Sachin's, allowing another individual, likely Ajit, to appear for the exam on his behalf. Sachin went on to secure 667 marks, helping him to take admission with an All-India Rank of 1,443. DCP (West) Amit Kumar said the role of Saini is central to the case and that his network of accomplices is currently being tracked. Six people were arrested at the time following a complaint lodged at Chomu police station. He was also booked in 2021 by Arain Police in Ajmer along with his brother Dr Ashok for cheating. "We will question other suspects who were booked in the previous two cases for more details," said the official.

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Vigilance Department on Sunday caught an IAS officer allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a businessman, an official release said. Raids are underway at his official residence, from where Rs 47 lakh cash has already been recovered, it said. "The IAS officer, who is posted as sub-collector, Dharamgarh in Kalahandi district, has been caught red handed while demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a local businessman, as an instalment of the overall demand of Rs 20 lakh bribe...," the department said in the release. The accused officer, in his mid-30s, "called the complainant to his official government residence at Dharamgarh, received the bribe amount... and kept the same inside his table drawer", it said. The department has registered a case against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and investigation is continuing, the release added.
