Apple Sports app serves up an ace of an update for tennis fans
The Apple Sports app is getting a Grand Slam of an update, and it's one which will please tennis fans who are looking forward to the start of Wimbledon.
A relatively new iPhone app, Apple Sports quietly launched in February 2024 and while you don't hear much about it, we heartily recommend downloading this app if you're a fan who likes to keep a keen eye on the latest scores.

Apple claims it's 'as fast as a sports app can be', delivering you live scores in real time on your lock screen thanks to Live Activities. There are no ads in the app, which is free to download, with match cards giving you play-by-play updates, live scores, standings, fixtures and betting odds.
Another handy feature is the Sports app can sync your favourite tournaments, leagues and teams with other Apple apps, such as Apple TV and Apple News, giving you easy access to the latest relevant live streams and news.
What's new in the Apple Sports app?
The big update for version 3.0 of the Apple Sports app is the introduction of tennis, allowing you to follow both the men's and women's Grand Slam and 1000-level tournaments throughout the year, starting of course with Wimbledon.
While the qualification rounds aren't covered, you'll be able to follow every match of the finals which start on June 30. The live match cards will show you who is currently serving and update you with every point scored, ensuring you don't miss a shot.
The updates extend to Live Activities displayed on your iPhone's lock screen and on your Apple Watch, giving you a glanceable view of the current server, live game score, and current games and sets standings.
A new Home, and a baseball boost
It's not just the addition of tennis though, as Apple has also updated the Home page, where you can select the order the tournaments and leagues you follow are displayed.
To re-order your followed leagues and tournaments, simply tap the menu icon and then tap 'edit'. From there you'll be able to re-order by dragging rows up and down. Hit 'done' and your Home page will match your new order.
Any followed teams who are playing that day will automatically grouped at the top of the home page, even if they are from different leagues and tournaments – handy to keep a tab of those most important to you.
Baseball fans will also be please with a small, but important addition to the game card as the names of the current pitcher and batter is now shown beneath their respective team's live score.

Apple continues to build out its offering in the Sports app, and with its fast, simple and ad-free experience it certainly challenges the established players in the market. It doesn't offer the same level of depth and features as rivals, but there's something to be said for the simplicity here.
As for what's coming after tennis and the refreshed home screen, we will have to wait and see. Personally, I'd love to see the introduction of cricket and native support on iPad (currently you can get the Apple Sports app on iPad, but it's limited to the iPhone screen size), while I'm sure there will be iPhone users around the world hoping Apple expands availability to more countries.
Something for Apple to consider for the iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 launches this Fall perhaps?

Sterling, of course, chose to leave North West England three years ago and joined Chelsea. At the time, the move was pitched to the media as Sterling's plan to hoover up soccer's biggest international prizes, having conquered England repeatedly with City. 'I've obviously achieved a lot in my career so far, but there is still so much more to achieve, and I'm really looking forward to doing that in a Chelsea shirt under Thomas's management,' he said in his unveiling. It was suggested to the media that he wanted to win the Ballon d'Or and Champions League, and, still only 27, there seemed plenty of opportunity for him to achieve such goals. Chelsea had only beaten Manchester City in the final of Europe's top competition a year earlier and were preparing under new ownership for another tilt at glory. But things haven't gone to plan at all. First, Chelsea imploded- it fired the man who brought him in, Thomas Tuchel replaced him with Graham Potter, and embarked on the wildest transfer sprees in living memory. Weighed down by a bloated squad, the club tanked and has been miles off the level they were at when Sterling arrived. The trouble for the Londoner is that this decline has tracked with a personal drop in form. When current coach Enzo Maresca walked in the door last summer, the ownership had decided he was one of the players who needed to move on. Salvation came in the form of an unlikely loan move to title challengers Arsenal. It represented a step up and a chance to prove he could still mix it with the best in the country. But he has barely played and failed to impress in the few moments he was given an opportunity. As BBC reporter Nizaar Kinsella pointed out, it was a move he had to make. 'He risked rotting in Chelsea's 'bomb squad' late last summer before being given the chance to go to Arsenal,' he wrote last month. Gareth Southgate Accidentally Reveals Why His Team Were Never Winners

Looking slightly taken aback to face a question more commonly reserved for a sporting rather than royal event, he paused thoughtfully before offering an answer. 'I'm excited about the future. Obviously, I've had 37 years in football, so it's a long time and I've enjoyed taking a step back and being involved in other things,' he said after being knighted by the King of England. Since leaving the biggest role in the country, the South Londoner has focused his energies far from the soccer field, working on projects that support young men and raising awareness of the importance of role models. Part of this distance, he revealed, was deliberate. He didn't want to loom over the team he'd so recently left. 'I think it's important that I am on that sofa and out of their way, you know. It's theirs to take on now, and I think it's important that I give the team as much space as possible,' he added. The journalists outside Winsor Castle pressed him on whether he missed parts of the job, and Southgate's answer was surprising. 'It is a little bit strange [watching the team] but also I'm not missing it,' Southgate told the BBC. 'I think it's hard to describe because until that weight's gone, you don't necessarily realize just on a day-to-day basis, you know, every hour of my day was thinking about how do I make England better, what's happening with the players, how do we do things differently,' he added. 'So I think [that like] any leader of big organizations, you're constantly thinking about how to do your job as well as you can.' Many managers at the top of the game have spoken about the toll the job brings. Modern greats like Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have discussed how energy can be drained. As a consequence, both coaches have taken sabbaticals at different stages of their careers. Although, to be honest, Southgate doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath; he's not of the same caliber. In statistical terms, he's been a success as England manager. But his sides have only inspired excitement by progressing in tournaments. The turgid manner in which his achievements were achieved made the ride underwhelming throughout, and this is why he repeatedly came unstuck in crucial moments against braver, smarter teams. (Photo by) Getty Images The lack of identity dogging his team was referenced by his replacement, Thomas Tuchel, after taking charge. His assessment of their Euro 2024 run to the final was withering. England 'were more afraid to drop out,' he felt, 'than having the excitement and hunger to win it.' Southgate isn't one for a confrontation and certainly wasn't going to taint his big day by exchanging barbs with his replacement. When asked to comment on the German's assessment, he said: 'I don't think it's important how I took it [Tuchel's criticism] or what I think,' Southgate said. 'I think what's important is for me to give the team, the manager, the space to operate. I think that's the right thing to do. 'I've had an amazing experience leading my country, but it's time for them to take it forward now, and I'll be a fan at home supporting it.' The reason for Southgate's knighthood goes beyond anything that happened on the field, however. His cherished national status has been achieved because he succeeded in presenting a version of inspirational English pride to the world in a manner no coach has really managed since Sir Bobby Robson in 1990. His dignified leadership often went beyond soccer, and he will be remembered for that. The BBC's article reflecting on his knighthood explained: 'Southgate was not just England's manager; he was the perfect ambassador for the FA when the game's waves spread beyond what happened on the pitch. It added: 'Southgate not only placed England back on what had become unfamiliar territory by leading them to the latter stages of showpiece tournaments, but he also lightened the load of a shirt that was too heavy for so many before he took charge. 'He made players relish playing for England again, making a somewhat unloved national team popular once more, with the peak of that feelgood factor coming between the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, which was largely played at home. 'Southgate established himself as a mature, measured and civilized leader, who had a hinterland that stretched beyond football, proving priceless in moments when diplomacy was required.' Those soft skills meant he succeeded in the ambassadorial capacity that few English managers have. But it may also be the reason he never won that elusive trophy. The lack of hunger to get back into the game and show what he can do now suggests what we always suspected: he was lacking that killer edge to get over the line.

Real Madrid Yet To Contact 21-Goal Striker With Bargain Release Clause
Ante Budimir scored 21 goals in La Liga this season. While Real Madrid is busy in action at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, the club continues to prepare for the 2025/26 campaign under new coach Xabi Alonso, and one of the additions that the sporting management could look to make to the roster looks likely to be in attack. Earlier this summer, El Chiringuito claimed that Osasuna forward Ante Budimir is one of five options being considered by Real Madrid, who are looking to add strength in depth in the final third. The departure of veteran Joselu meant that superstar Kylian Mbappé was virtually the only natural center-forward in the squad during his debut season. Budimir is thought to appeal, in part due to a low-cost release clause which is available for part of the summer transfer window, but Los Blancos have not consolidated their interest as of yet. 'There have been questions about Budimir, obviously,' the club's sporting director Braulio Vázquez told Cadena SER, 'but Real Madrid has not called'. What is Ante Budimir's release clause? According to the report from Cadena SER, Budimir's usual release clause of €20 million ($23.3 million) is reduced to only €8 million ($9.32 million) for European-based clubs during a part of the summer transfer window. At 33 years of age, Budimir is not a young target who would offer much resale value, but he does have a proven track record in Spain, with 78 goals in 204 games for Mallorca and Osasuna since moving to the Iberian peninsula from Italian side Crotone in early 2019. The Croatian made his debut for his national team a year after moving to Spain, in 2020, and has scored six goals in 32 appearances alongside his international side's captain, Real Madrid legend Luka Modrić. In 2024/25, only Kylian Mbappé and Robert Lewandowski, of FC Barcelona, scored more goals than Budimir, who recorded 21 goals in La Liga, 10 fewer than Mbappé and six fewer than Lewandowski. He was also ever-present for Osasuna, who narrowly missed out on qualification for European competition, as he played a part in all 38 league matches, starting 34 of them. Real Madrid's plans may have been altered somewhat by the selection choices of new coach Xabi Alonso, who has opted to give ample game time to 21-year-old attacked Gonzalo García as a striker in his first two matches. Alonso started him in the absence of Kylian Mbappé, who has suffered with illness while in the United States, and rewarded the youngster for his goal against Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal by keeping his place against Mexican side Pachuca. 'He's a striker who can be a reference point,' Alonso said as he reflected on García, who may provide a homegrown solution to the lack of options available to the new coach in his squad. García made only four first-team appearances before the Club World Cup this season, scoring a late winner against Leganés in the Copa del Rey, but did score an impressive return of 25 goals in 36 games while playing for Raúl González's Castilla side, Real Madrid's second string, in the third tier of Spanish soccer, Primera RFEF.
