CMAT chants 'Free Palestine' during Glastonbury set

RTÉ News18 hours ago

CMAT chanted "Free Palestine" and waded into the Pyramid Stage crowd, who were dancing in the midday heat, during her Glastonbury Festival set on Friday.
CMAT, real name Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, played songs from her back catalogue as well as new singles, including Take a Sexy Picture of Me, from her forthcoming third studio album, Euro-Country.
Plenty of festivalgoers could be seen doing the viral dance to the song, which has taken social media by storm in recent months.
Kicking off her set with Have Fun!, CMAT, who wore an all-purple ensemble with white boots, sang while lying flat on the floor before getting to her feet and shouting: "Glasto!"
CMAT, who blends pop and rock with folk and country influences, performed from her back catalogue, receiving rapturous applause while singing hits including I Don't Really Care for You.
The singer also encouraged fans to dance along to the "Dunboyne, County Meath two-step" while singing I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!.
"I think we might be about to break a personal record for the very sexy CMAT band," she told crowds.
"We've never attempted it (the dance) with this many people, so I'm a little scared," she added.
Introducing herself, she said: "My name is CMAT and I'm literally just a young one from Dunboyne/Dublin, depending who you ask."
"This is the scariest moment of my life, but it will probably singlehandedly be the best and most amazing thing I'll ever do," she added.
Towards the end of her set, CMAT waded into the crowd to sing her popular song Stay for Something and chanted "Free Palestine" in reference to the ongoing war in Gaza.
CMAT released her debut album, If My Wife New I'd Be Dead, in 2022, and followed it up with the Mercury Prize-nominated Crazymad, for Me in 2023.

Irish rap trio Kneecap are to perform at Glastonbury Festival on Saturday after a number of politicians called for them to be banned from the event. It comes after one of the band's members, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, 27, was charged with allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah, while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah' at a gig in November last year. Last week the rapper, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates Naoise Ó Cairealláin and JJ Ó Dochartaigh at Westminster Magistrates' Court in Free Mo Chara T-shirts. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch also said the BBC 'should not be showing' the trio's set in a post on social media last week. Badenoch said in an X post, which was accompanied by an article from The Times which said the BBC had not banned the group: 'The BBC should not be showing Kneecap propaganda. Kneecap are not listed as one of the acts being shown live by the broadcaster. Ahead of the group's set, an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson told the PA news agency: 'Ticket-holders can once again expect to see uniformed officers on site at Glastonbury Festival 24/7 throughout the festival as part of our extensive policing operation ensuring it is safe for everyone attending, as well as those who live nearby.' The 1975 headlined the festival's Pyramid Stage on Friday night, with the performance seeing singer Matty Healy joke he was his generation's 'best songwriter'. After performing Part Of The Band he sat on a stool while smoking and sipping his drink, Healy said: 'What this moment is making me realise is that I probably am the best songwriter of my generation. 'The best what they say, a poet, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am. 'Generational words and I just wanted to remind you, over the next couple of minutes, these lyrics are poetry, I believe.' The band then launched into Chocolate from their 2013 self-titled debut, before Healy remarked 'I was only joking about being a poet' at its conclusion. Made up of four school friends, the group comprised of singer Healy, bassist Ross MacDonald, guitarist Adam Hann and drummer George Daniel were headlining the festival for the first time. Friday also saw a performance from Scottish music star Lewis Capaldi who told the Glastonbury crowds 'I'm back baby' as he played a surprise set, two years after a performance at the festival during which he struggled to manage his Tourette syndrome symptoms. Earlier on Friday, alternative pop star Lorde surprised fans with a secret set at Worthy Farm, performing her latest album Virgin, which was released on Friday, in full. Earlier in the year the singer, who began his career in the 1960s with the band Buffalo Springfield, said he had initially turned down the offer to perform at the festival, saying it was "under corporate control" of the BBC in a message on his website. Glastonbury boss issue warning to fans ahead of Kneecap's performance

Glastonbury Festival chiefs have issued a warning for those navigating the crowds, with Kneecap expected to pull in the masses. A warning list has been circulated among revellers detailing the acts likely to attract the most festival-goers. Festival organisers advised attendees: "Kneecap will draw a large audience for their 4pm West Holts show. If you're not planning to see them, please plan alternative routes around that area. If you do plan to attend, listen to stewards, and please have some other entertainment options in mind in case the field reaches capacity and we need to close it as part of our crowd planning measures." Kate Nash is tipped to gather a hefty audience at Left Field by 9pm, with the advice being to get there early if fans want to secure a spot. They further mentioned: "Scissor Sisters will be very busy at Woodsies at 10.30pm. It's likely we'll need to close the field once it reaches capacity as part of our crowd planning measures. Charlie XCX will also be popular in our new enlarged Other Stage arena at 10.30pm.", reports the Mirror. Thanks to the Glastonbury app, which allows music lovers to mark the acts they're seeing, organisers have a handle on predicting the heavy hitters. As the fourth day of Glastonbury Festival 2025 surges on, countless partygoers are fuelling the weekend festivities. Today's roster features an enigmatic slot marked Patchwork from 6.15pm to 7.15pm on the Pyramid Stages, sparking wild guesses about the mystery act, from Haim to Pulp, even Chappell Roan making the potential surprise list. The headliner for tonight on the iconic Pyramid Stage is the highly anticipated Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts, but questions are swirling about whether the gig will be available to livestream for fans at home. A BBC spokesperson has stepped in to shed some light on the situation: "On Saturday on BBC iPlayer, our Glastonbury Channel and five streams for the main stages will bring a range of live performances to audiences. At the artist's request, we won't be livestreaming Neil Young's set. Our plans, including those for our TV highlights shows and on-demand coverage, continue to be finalised right up to and during the festival." Despite this, RAYE's stint on the Pyramid Stage, happening from 8pm to 9pm, will go ahead with a broadcast as planned, along with Charli XCX's big moment headlining the Other Stage starting at 10.30pm. Saturday's line-up also boasts Doechii topping the bill at the West Holts stage from 10.45pm. Scissors Sisters are set to grace the Woodsies stage for a nostalgic performance at 10.30pm. Enthusiasts can also tune in for Gary Numan and Caribou rocking The Park stage later in the day; there's even talk of an unannounced surprise act slated for the mysterious 7.30pm to 8.30pm slot. And indie rock enthusiasts won't want to miss Hard-Fi's headline show on the Avalon stage kicking off at 11.10pm.
