Rupee extends slump to 3-month low on Iran-Israel tensions; ends at 86.74/$

Indian Rupee extended its fall on Thursday to hit a three-month low as West Asia jitters deepened the risk-off sentiment among traders.
The domestic currency depreciated 27 paise to close at 86.74 against the dollar, the lowest level since March 17 this year, according to Bloomberg. During the session, the currency fell as low as 86.90, taking the fall to 1.33 per cent so far this month.
The currency traded weakly as rising crude oil prices and escalating Iran-Israel tensions, including renewed US pressure on Iran's nuclear program, weighed on sentiment, according to Jateen Trivedi, VP research analyst - commodity and currency at LKP Securities. "Additionally, the US Fed's indication that rate cuts may be delayed by around six months supported the dollar, adding pressure on the rupee."
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Wednesday, rejected US President Donald Trump's calls for unconditional surrender. 'The Americans should know that any US military intervention will undoubtedly be accompanied by irreparable damage,' Khamenei warned.
Trump, meanwhile, said on Wednesday that his patience with Iran had run out, with Bloomberg reporting that US officials are preparing for a possible strike on Iran in the coming days. The US military has moved some aircraft and ships from bases in the West Asia that may be vulnerable to any potential Iranian attack, according to a Reuters report.
Crude oil prices remained volatile after these developments. Brent crude price was up 0.26 per cent at $76.90 per barrel, while WTI crude prices were higher by 0.69 per cent at 75.66, as of 3:30 PM IST. With uncertainty persisting, the rupee may stay under pressure in the coming days, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.
Meanwhile, the dollar traded slightly higher a day after the US Federal Reserve kept the interest rates unchanged for the fourth consecutive time. However, Fed Chair Jerome Powell downgraded US growth estimates while projecting higher inflation. 'The cost of the tariff has to be paid, and some of it will fall on the end consumer,' Powell said.
The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.03 per cent at 98.93.

War risks, rising oil prices push rupee down to 3-month low of 86.73

Amid the escalating Israel-Iran conflict and the rise in crude oil prices, the rupee extended its decline for the third consecutive day, shedding another 26 paise against the US dollar to close at 86.73 levels, marking its lowest close in the last three months. As the Middle East conflict is likely to worsen, the rupee is set to fall below the 87 level in the coming days unless the Reserve Bank of India intervenes in the market and prevents further decline, analysts said. The decline was primarily driven by persistent geopolitical uncertainty and a hawkish stance from the US Federal Reserve, making the dollar more attractive. Brent crude oil futures rose above $77 per barrel on Thursday, climbing to an over four-month high, driven by elevated geopolitical risks. Reports indicated that Israel attacked Iran's Arak heavy water reactor early Thursday, following Israeli President Isaac Herzog's statement about dismantling Iran's nuclear program. The prevailing risk-averse market sentiment and dollar demand from importers, fuelled by ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, has pulled down the rupee value, analysts said. Moreover, muted domestic equity markets and rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East also pressurised the rupee, they added. Jateen Trivedi, research analyst, LKP Securities, said the rupee traded weak as rising crude oil prices and escalating Middle East tensions, including renewed US pressure on Iran's nuclear programme, weighed on sentiment. 'Additionally, the US Fed's indication that rate cuts may be delayed by around six months supported the dollar, adding pressure on the rupee. The expected trading range for the rupee is seen between 86.25 and 87.25,' he said. Rating agency ICRA said any escalation in the conflict in the area could significantly impact global supplies and prices. An increase in crude oil and gas prices will be positive for the profitability of upstream companies even as marketing margins of downstream players are adversely impacted. 'Iran's crude oil production is around 3.3 mbd, of which it exports 1.8-2.0 mbd. While Iranian oil and gas facilities have reportedly been attacked, the extent of damage is not clear. However, any disruption of Iranian production and supplies or a wider regional conflict impacting other large producers in the region could push energy prices higher,' it said. Crude oil imports from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE that pass through the Strait of Hormuz (SoH) account for 45-50 per cent of total crude imports by India. About 60 per cent of the natural gas imports by India pass through SoH. At these elevated crude oil prices, while the profitability of upstream players will remain healthy and their capex plans will remain intact, the marketing margins of downstream players will be impacted along with the expansion of LPG under-recoveries, ICRA said.

Crude beyond current levels to impact India's GDP estimates, says Icra

New Delhi: Oil is likely to average around $70-80 a barrel in FY26, and a sustained rise from the current levels risks a reduction in India's growth forecasts, according to Icra Ratings Ltd. "If crude oil prices persist at the current levels, it may not lead to a material revision in our GDP growth forecast, which is currently pegged at 6.2% for FY2026,' the rating firm said on Friday. 'However, a sustained increase from the current levels would weigh on India Inc.'s profitability and portend a downward revision in our GDP growth forecast for the fiscal." Brent has crossed $77 a barrel as prices spiked over 10% in the past week, as the Israel-Iran conflict intensified. At 6.50 pm on Thursday, the August contract on the Intercontinental Exchange was trading at $77.58, 1.15% higher than the previous close. On Wednesday, Icra marginally lowered India's FY26 GDP growth rate to 6.2% from 6.5% in FY25. A sustained flare-up in the conflict poses upside risks for estimates of crude oil prices, and India's net oil imports and the current account deficit, it said. 'A $10/bbl increase in the average price of crude oil for the fiscal will typically push up net oil imports by ~$13-14 billion during the year, enlarging the CAD (current account deficit) by 0.3% of GDP.' India is a net importer of oil, and it meets over 85% of its energy requirement through imports. At present, Icra expects the CAD to remain at 1.2-1.3% of GDP in FY2026. Since 13 June 2025, as conflict started between Israel and Iran, crude prices have surged to $74-75 a barrel from $64-65 a barrel. The conflict has sparked concerns of Iran blocking transport of energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the key energy choke points through which almost 20% of global liquids and liquified natural gas (LNG) is traded. Any escalation in the geopolitical situation could significantly impact global energy supplies and prices. Iran's crude oil production is around 3.3 million barrels per day, of which it exports 1.8-2.0 million barrels a day. While Iranian oil and gas facilities have reportedly been attacked, the extent of damage is not clear, Icra said. However, any disruption of Iranian production and supplies or a wider regional conflict impacting other large producers in the region could push energy prices higher, it said. Crude shipped from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE, which pass through the Strait of Hormuz, account for 45-50% of total crude imports by India. About 60% of the natural gas imports by India pass through this strait. Icra said "at these elevated crude oil prices, while the profitability of upstream players will remain healthy and their capex plans will remain intact, the marketing margins of downstream players will be impacted along with the expansion of LPG under-recoveries". It also said the change in crude oil prices is likely to translate faster into higher wholesale inflation and consumer inflation. For every 10% increase in crude oil prices, wholesale inflation will rise by 80-100 basis points, compared to 20-30 basis points in consumer inflation, provided the transmission into the retail selling price of petrol and diesel. Mint reported earlier that it is unlikely that the public sector oil marketing companies would transfer the higher cost to the consumers in the near future, given that there has been no downward revision, too, in the past year despite a fall in global prices.

Adani Power adds Reliance Power's former unit to its string of acquisitions

Next Story Krishna Yadav NCLT has approved Adani Power's ₹ 4,000 crore resolution plan to acquire Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd. Adani Power is looking to increase its power-generating capacity to 30.67 GW by 2030 from 17.55 GW now, making it India's largest private sector capacity expansion. Adani Power Ltd has inched closer to acquiring the bankrupt Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd, a former subsidiary of Reliance Power Ltd, adding to a list of distressed but strategically located power assets as it strives towards its goal. The National Company Law Tribunal on 18 June approved Adani Power's ₹ 4,000 crore resolution plan to acquire VIPL following a majority nod in February by the distressed company's committee of creditors. Adani Power aims to increase its 17.55 GW of power-generating capacity—including thermal plants across states and a 40 MW solar project in Gujarat—to 30.67 GW by 2030, making it the largest private sector capacity expansion in the country. With its latest acquisition, Adani Power will gain control of VIPL's 600 MW thermal power plant in Butibori, Nagpur, comprising two 300 MW units. The plant has a long-term power purchase agreement with the Maharashtra government for 308.5 MW, ensuring stable cash flows and potential for future scale-up. The VIPL deal follows Adani's recent acquisitions of Dahanu Power ( ₹ 815 crore), Lanco Amarkantak Power, and Coastal Energen ( ₹ 3,330.88 crore), underscoring the group's strategy to drive growth. On Thursday, 19 June, Adani Power shares fell 3.2% to ₹ 533.20 each on NSE, while the Nifty 50 held steady, shedding just 18.80 points amid geopolitical tensions because of the escalating Israel-Iran conflict. VIPL's insolvency Vidarbha Industries Power was admitted into insolvency in September 2024 after CFM Asset Reconstruction moved the tribunal under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). On 24 February this year, Adani Power informed stock exchanges that VIPL's lenders had approved its revival plan, subject to the terms of the letter of intent and necessary regulatory approvals. Adani Power had emerged as the successful resolution applicant after a competitive process that attracted bids from several major players, including Capri Global Holdings, CESC Ltd, Hindustan Thermal Projects, Jindal Power, JSW Energy, NTPC Ltd, Orissa Metaliks, Vedanta Ltd, and Shriniwas Spintex Industries. Under the approved plan, Adani Power will pay ₹ 4,000 crore against total admitted liabilities of ₹ 6,753 crore. The Adani entity has been directed to complete the payment within the stipulated timeframe. 'The Resolution Applicant is directed to make payment of the entire Resolution Plan amount within the time period stipulated under the Resolution Plan, failing which the entire amount paid shall stand forfeited," a Mumbai bench of the NCLT said in its 18 June order. As per the plan, the funding will be arranged through internal accruals or financing by eligible affiliates, with the flexibility to raise capital via equity, debt, preference shares, or external commercial borrowings. Reliance Power's exit VIPL was originally established as a special-purpose vehicle by Reliance Power to develop a 600 MW thermal power plant in Butibori, Nagpur, under a concession from the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation. The project was later converted into an independent power project. In September 2024, Reliance Power announced that VIPL was no longer its subsidiary after settling ₹ 3,872 crore in corporate guarantees extended on its behalf. As part of the settlement with CFM Asset Reconstruction, all associated obligations were released and 100% of VIPL's shares were pledged in favour of CFM. VIPL had defaulted on loans from Axis Bank and State Bank of India, which were later acquired by CFM ARC.
