World Ovarian Cancer Day 2025: Doctors share symptoms, risk factors and lifestyle changes to prevent the disease

Hindustan Times08-05-2025

World Ovarian Cancer Day is observed every year on May 8 to raise awareness about one of the most underdiagnosed cancers in women, ovarian cancer. Often referred to as a "silent killer," it typically presents no clear symptoms in its early stages, making early detection difficult. To mark this important day, HT Digital spoke to medical experts who shared key tips to lower your risk and stay healthy. "Ovarian cancer is well-known all over the world. The factors contributing to its increasing prevalence may be in both resource-rich and resource-limited regions of the world. It's considered to be the most lethal gynaecological cancer in the United States. In India, it is the second most common gynaecological cancer being diagnosed and causing mortality after cervical cancer," says Dr Sachin Sekhar Biswal, Medical Oncologist, Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar.
"Ovarian cancer primarily affects women between the ages of 50 55 and 64. It can also occur in younger women if they have a family history of ovarian, breast, endometrial or colorectal cancer or who have never given birth or genetic mutations like BRCA1, BRCA2 or Lynch syndrome and Hormone replacement therapy may increase ovarian cancer risk, especially if used for more than five years. Consult a doctor before starting HRT," says Dr. Pratima Raj, Associate Consultant, Gynaecological Oncology, Manipal Hospital.
"The risk of ovarian cancer increases with age, the average age of detection being in the sixth to seventh decade. Familial or genetic cases appear a decade earlier than sporadic cases. The risk factors for ovarian cancer are increasing age, infertility, Nulliparity, polycystic ovarian disease, and cigarette smoking. Oral contraceptive pills, breastfeeding, hysterectomy, intrauterine devices, as well as tubal ligations are protective factors for ovarian cancer," adds Dr Sachin.
Dr. Pratima highlights that comprehensive ovarian cancer treatment involves advanced medical technologies and an interdisciplinary approach. The following are some of the key treatment options available:
"Not all ovarian cancers are malignant or pose a threat to survival. Benign ovarian tumours and germ cell tumours that present early in life are potentially curable with normal life expectancy. Epithelial ovarian tumours need to be staged surgically to know about potential curability and survival. Most of these cancers need a multimodal approach, including cytoreductive surgery, IV chemotherapy, and sometimes intraperitoneal chemotherapy," says Dr Sachin.
"While lifestyle and healthy diet management are important in reducing the risk of ovarian cancer, they alone may not be sufficient to fully prevent it. Women can significantly lower the risk by maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding smoking. Early detection and proactive care can make all the difference in combating this silent threat," says Dr. Pratima.
"Lifestyle changes impact the development of ovarian cancer, and modifiable factors may lead to a decrease in incidence as well as increased survival," advises Dr Sachin.

Ozempic Users Flock To Protein Shake Now Named America's Unhealthiest Bottled Drink

Water is the best way to hydrate, but if you're craving something else, be cautious. Many bottled drinks like juice and protein shakes may seem healthy, but they're often high in sugar. These convenient drinks can exceed daily recommended sugar intake, making them a less healthy choice than they appear. Fairlife's Core Power protein shakes have been named the unhealthiest bottled beverage in America by food and nutrition magazine Eat This, Not That!, despite their popularity among fitness enthusiasts and Ozempic users. The shakes' muscle-boosting reputation is overshadowed by concerns over their nutritional content, sparking surprise and concern among consumers. A news portal consulted dietitian Mary Sabat, MS, RDN, LD, who identified the seven unhealthiest food choices-ranking Core Power Protein Shakes as the worst among them for health impact. They are a go-to for many after a workout or to boost their protein intake, but Sabat says these drinks are highly problematic. "I put these first because they are so highly marketed as a great source of protein and a healthy food when in reality they are a disaster to your metabolic health," Sabat says. "Core Power Protein Shakes may seem like a convenient post-workout drink, but a closer look at the ingredients reveals several health concerns." She explains, "They use non-organic, conventional dairy, which often comes from cows fed GMO corn and soy and may contain residues of hormones and antibiotics-unlike grass-fed dairy, which is higher in omega-3s and CLA and free from harmful residues. The addition of carrageenan, a thickening agent linked to gut inflammation and irritation, further detracts from its health profile." Sabat also points out other harmful ingredients. "Artificial sweeteners like sucralose and acesulfame potassium are also used, both of which have been associated with gut microbiome disruption and potential carcinogenic effects in animal studies," she says. Sabat adds, "Lastly, the label includes 'natural flavours," a term that can encompass up to 100 different undisclosed chemical additives, many of which are far from natural. Together, these ingredients make Core Power far less healthy than its marketing implie"s.

Forget ozempic, this natural fibre mimics its effects, aiding dramatic weight loss and blood sugar control, say experts

We've all heard about Ozempic, the diabetes drug that's become popular for its strong weight loss effects. But what if a simple, natural ingredient like fibre could do something similar? That's what a new study from the University of Arizona and the University of Vienna suggests. Researchers have found that beta-glucan, a special type of fibre found in oats and barley, may help with weight loss and blood sugar control, just like Ozempic, but without any medication. For a long time, fibre wasn't the star of the nutrition world. People mostly focused on carbs and protein. But now, fibre is making a comeback, especially as we learn more about how it helps our gut and overall health. Our gut is home to trillions of tiny bacteria, known as the gut microbiome. These bacteria love fibre. In return, they help us digest food, fight off illness, and even manage weight. In the new 2024 study, scientists gave different types of fibre to mice who were on a high-fat diet. Only one type worked for weight loss: beta-glucan. Beta-glucan is a soluble fibre. That means it dissolves in water and can be easily used by gut bacteria. You can find it in common whole grains like oats and barley. In the study, mice that ate beta-glucan didn't eat less food, but they still lost weight and fat. Their metabolism changed. One of the biggest changes was an increase in a helpful gut bacterium called Ileibacterium, which other studies have also linked to weight key change was the production of a chemical called butyrate. This is made when gut bacteria digest fibre. Butyrate helps your body release GLP-1, a hormone that reduces hunger. Ozempic works by mimicking this same hormone. So in simple terms, beta-glucan might help your body make more of this hormone doesn't just help with weight. It also protects the lining of your gut, supports the liver, and may lower inflammation. Scientists say we still have a lot to learn, but the early signs are said, remember: this research was done in mice. We still need more studies in humans to be sure it works the same beta-glucan to your diet is easy. Here are some foods that naturally contain it: Oats Barley Sorghum Rye Maize (corn) Triticale (a wheat-rye hybrid) Wheat and durum wheat Rice Mushrooms Seaweed These foods slow down digestion, which keeps you full for longer and helps your body manage blood sugar better.
