Careless driving arrest over Trafford fatal biker crash
A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving following a fatal collision between a car and a motorcycle.It happened in the Moss Lane area of Trafford at about 09:30 BST on Wednesday, when a Citroen C1 struck the bike.The rider, a 54-year-old man, was declared dead at the scene, Greater Manchester Police said.The arrested man, aged in his 70s, has been bailed and police have appealed for any witnesses to contact them.

New 2025 record as nearly 1,200 migrants reach UK in small boats in one day
Nearly 1,200 migrants arrived in the UK on Saturday, crossing the English Channel from France in small boats, new government figures have revealed. The Home Office confirmed that 1,194 migrants made the journey in 18 boats, capitalising on settled weather conditions. This marks the highest number recorded on a single day this year, bringing the provisional annual total to 14,811. The figure is 42 per cent higher than at the same point last year, increasing pressure on the Labour government, which came to power a year ago partly due to public dissatisfaction with the previous Conservative administration's attempts to control the crossings. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has promised to tackle the issue by dismantling the criminal gangs facilitating the crossings. This comes after his government abandoned the Conservative plan to send migrants arriving in the UK through unauthorised channels to Rwanda. Since gaining power, Sir Keir's government has sought better intelligence-sharing internationally, enhanced enforcement operations in northern France and has adopted tougher rules in its immigration legislation. French police officers were seen watching on Saturday as migrants boarded at a beach in Gravelines, between Calais and Dunkirk. Authorities were then pictured escorting the boats. French authorities said they rescued 184 people. "Pretty shocking, those scenes yesterday," Defence Secretary John Healey told Sky News. He added that it is a "really big problem" that French police are unable to intervene to intercept boats in shallow waters, adding that the UK is pressing for the French to put new rules into operation so they can intervene. "They're not doing it, but, but for the first time for years – we've got the level of cooperation needed," he told Sky News. "We've got the agreement that they will change the way they work, and our concentration now is to push them to get that into operation so they can intercept these smugglers and stop these people in the boats, not just on the shore." Despite French and UK efforts, the cross-Channel route, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, remains a major smuggling corridor for people fleeing conflict or poverty. Many migrants favour the UK for reasons of language, family ties or perceived easier access to asylum and work. The Home Office says 36,816 people arrived in the UK on small boats in 2024, 25 per cent more than in 2023 (29,437). The highest number of arrivals was in 2022, with 45,774.

‘Essex Boys' triple killer released from prison
A triple killer convicted of the 'Essex Boys' gangland murders has been released from prison, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) confirmed. Michael Steele was jailed for life in 1998 for the killings of Tony Tucker, Pat Tate and Craig Rolfe, which he denied, alongside co-defendant Jack Whomes. The three men were found shot dead in a Range Rover in Rettendon, near Chelmsford, Essex, in 1995. A Parole Board panel decided in February to free Steele, now in his 80s, because his imprisonment was 'no longer necessary for the protection of the public' but Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood challenged the decision and asked for his case to be reviewed again on the grounds the decision was legally irrational. Steele was released from prison in May, the MoJ confirmed. A spokesperson said: 'Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Craig Rolfe, Tony Tucker and Pat Tate. 'This decision was made by the independent Parole Board after a thorough risk assessment. 'Michael Steele will be on licence for the rest of his life, with strict conditions and intensive probation supervision. He faces an immediate return to prison if he breaks the rules.' The killings took place after a row over a drug deal, prosecutors said, and the case later inspired the 2000 film Essex Boys, starring Sean Bean. The decision in February to release Steele came in the second review by the Parole Board following the end of his initial minimum term of 23 years' imprisonment. He had not been assessed as suitable for formal risk-reduction interventions while in prison, 'partly through lack of need and partly because he had maintained his innocence of involvement in the murders', the Parole Board's summary said. It added that risk factors for Steele at the time of his offending included his 'criminal lifestyle, involvement with drugs and association with the wrong people'. But the Parole Board also found that Steele's behaviour in prison had shown 'marked improvement' and none of the witnesses considered risks would be imminent if he was released into the community. Strict licence conditions were set out for Steele, including to live at a designated address, be of good behaviour, provide financial and business details, give up his passport, and be subject to electronic tagging and a specified curfew. There were additional restrictions relating to the use of electronic technology, contact with the media or other publications, and not to own a boat, plane or firearm. The Parole Board decided Whomes, then aged 59, could be released in 2021.

Woman ‘sexually assaulted in city centre bar' as cops launch urgent hunt & release CCTV of man they wish to speak to
A WOMAN was allegedly sexually assaulted in a city centre bar, with police urgently looking for information on the attack. Cops said the "distressing" attack happened in "full view" of other punters. Nottinghamshire Police released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to after the horror assault. They urged anyone who knows him to get in touch. Officers were called to the pub in Nottingham city centre at 12.30am on Sunday. Detective Sergeant Helen Sanders, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "This was a distressing incident for the victim who was targeted in full view of other members of the public. "We have been working throughout the day to track down the person responsible and believe the man pictured in this image can help with our inquiries. "Anyone who knows him is asked to get in touch without delay." Anyone with information is asked to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 14 of June 1. 1
