Almost half are between 20 to 30 years of age. If they didn't like jazz, they wouldn't be coming. There's a certain inclusivity in jazz," said Mohanty, co-founder, Skinny Mo's Jazz Club. Amar Sukhi, an amateur saxophonist and founder of the Mumbai-based, The BlueBop Cafe, agrees, 'The younger generation, to my complete and happy surprise, has taken to jazz like ducks to water.' Once considered niche, jazz has been making its presence felt more than ever.

Education and exposure are essential to building a culture or a subculture. With more venues coming up, there is more access. We bit the bullet and slowly the audience started building. Before us, there was a handful of jazz shows. We started with five to six nights of jazz gigs a week. This helped in building a base and gave the opportunity to people to listen to jazz and take a subjective decision. People have more access now and artistes have more opportunities to perform

From revival to a wider appeal
Since its introduction in the 1920s through its popularity in the 60s, jazz has been gradually cementing its base among an increasing number of takers. What started from being a star-hotel staple for the elites, trickled down to restaurants and clubs. From the British era to the post-Independence jazz, its blend with the Indian classical
music
and Bollywood, to the cross-cultural influences and the more diverse nature today, jazz in India only seems to be growing.
Increase in the number of venues, and dedicated jazz fests are proof. 'Earlier, the spectrum of people tended to be narrowed down into the upper-tier. But accessibility to jazz has grown tremendously. When we restarted our jazz gigs in 2021, the democratisation of jazz gave rise to multiple venues in Kolkata,' said Anand Puri, the third-generation owner of Kolkata-based Trincas, which has had a relationship with live gigs since the 60s, with legendary performers marking their presence.

The popularity can also be linked to jazz's improvisational aspect that helps it blend with other genres like pop, classical, rock, and electronica. It's this free-spirited nature that keeps jazz relevant. 'Since jazz is such an improvised style, it's something to be experienced live. No one style is alike. No two gigs by a jazz artiste are the same. Jazz fests, theater hall shows, sit-down jazz gigs, and active listening sessions, are becoming a thing for the keen listener,' said Pune-based Vinay Kaushal, guitar player and music composer.

Rhythm, multiculturism and more: Why is jazz making the right noise
One of the aspects that's making jazz tick boxes is the lack of geographical limitations and the essence of multiculturalism. Musicians and jazz propagators from cities like Kolkata, Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Goa and Delhi, are on the quest to find their individual style and rhythm to keep listeners hooked. 'My band and I usually perform a mix of contemporary and classic jazz, and try to keep the arrangements exciting.
We also add a few funk, and pop jazz tunes that are familiar to the audience,' said Mumbai-based Zian B, a jazz artiste and vocal coach, who performs across cities with her band Zian B Collective.

'There's something for every listener'
What makes jazz more vibrant is that there's something for everyone. 'If listeners give it a go, there's something for every listener. The lines between modern day blues, R&B, Hip Hop, and jazz are so blurred (in a great way) that people are more and more exposed to jazz styles, whether they're aware of it or not,' said Vinay Kaushal, guitar player and music composer. Inquisitiveness towards unique sounds, is also paving a path towards a promising future.
'We are getting called to international fests because of the uniqueness of the sound we are bringing. It's not traditional New York City or New Orleans jazz. The bands that are getting called, have a sound which is native to our land,' said Sayar Mitra, bass player and music educator, who performed at a recently held Cape Town International Jazz Festival with Bombay Lights, which fuses Indian classical with jazz and funk.

Panchayat season 4 review: Phulera loses its innocence, originality as murky politics, repetition of formula take over
Panchayat season 4 review Cast: Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, Neena Gupta, Faisal Malik, Chandan Roy, Sanvikaa, Durgesh Kumar, Sunita Rajwar, Ashok Pathak, and Pankaj Jha Director: Deepak Kumar Mishra Rating: ★★.5 For years, Panchayat served as a reminder of the power of Indian streaming. In a wave of crime dramas and gun battles, this show - about the life of a Panchayat secretary - had won hearts and impressed critics. But like they say, nothing lasts forever. And sadly, Panchayat's goodwill seems to be ending before the show itself calls it a day. The latest season, focused on Phulera's Panchayat elections, completely disregards what had made the show great - simplicity and relatability. Panchayat season 4 sees formula creeping in finally, and also an overload of the murkiness of politics over the simplicity of human emotions. Panchayat season 4 review: The old favourite is back, but isn't up to the mark this time. Panchayat season 4 opens a few weeks after the end of season 3. The elections are upon us, and Manju Devi (Neena Gupta) and Pradhan ji (Raghuvir Yadav) face their toughest challenge in the form of Kranti Devi and Bhushan (Sunita Rajwar and Durgesh Kumar). Abhishek (Jitendra) has long given up the hope of being non-partisan and is actively campaigning for Manju's party. But despite Pradhan's 'dabdaba' in Phulera, winning may not be as easy as it has been so far. The spectre of elections looms large on Panchayat season 4 and is easily its undoing as well. The first two seasons were splendid, largely because of the anthology-like quality of storytelling, where each episode was a self-contained story creating an overarching narrative. Season 3 digressed a little but still managed to hold its own, largely due to crisp writing and some memorable sequences. What Panchayat season 4 lacks But season 4 gets lost in the political machinations and one-upmanship of the elections. It was important for the makers to keep the focus on the elections. But one feels that it sucks the joy and innocence out of Panchayat, which had been its USP all along. The new season also feels more manufactured than before, with the sameness of formula appearing to finally show its face here. That robs the narrative of the freshness that Panchayat had managed to retain for three seasons. The biggest disservice the show does is to Pradhan ji himself. Raghuvir Yadav's character has been shown as a clever politician, but a good man who is the right choice for Phulera. That is why Abhishek is comfortable letting go of his impartiality to side with him over the years. However, this season turns him into just a politician who tries to win votes and get back into power through populist measures. If the intent was to show how flawed he is, it did not translate. In fact, if anything, it makes him come across as inefficient. There are a few stray moments in the show that highlight this, from unclean drains to unhappy voters. But the show misses the chance to really drive home the point. All it does is generate sympathy for the other side. Panchayat had a chance to act non-partisan here, too. If only it had presented Bhushan with an ounce of humanity. But it messes up there too, reducing Bhushan and Kranti to stereotypical bad guys, right down to a sinister 90s' background theme for them. What works in season 4 But then, the show does redeem itself with the arc it gives to Vinod (Ashok Pathak). It is praiseworthy how the show manages to bring a supporting character's arc to the forefront. If it was Prahlad in season 2, it's Vinod here. Pathak's heartfelt performance also deserves a mention. In the ensemble, the heavy lifting has yet again been done by the support cast, with Ashok Pathak, Durgesh Kumar, Chandan Roy, Sunita Rajwar, and Raghuvir Yadav shining the brightest. Despite how his character has been handled, Raghuvir Yadav manages to give one of the most memorable scenes of the show in the final episode. Neena Gupta and Jitendra Kumar are capable as always, but somehow get subdued with everything happening around them. It's not their fault that their characters come across as passive somehow. Panchayat season 4 is not bad. It is just a letdown by the show's lofty standards. On its own, Phulera still breathes, and there are stories and characters (the electrician and Manju's father being worthy additions) that stand out. Some old returnees also steal the spotlights. But the chuckles are fewer, the narrative a little jaded, and the sheen somewhat less bright than it had been.

Expected stubbornness but Jay Shah is honest and proper: Ganguly on tenure as BCCI President
NEW DELHI: Reflecting on his eventful tenure as BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly has revealed that he expected a "certain kind of toughness and stubbornness" from the then Board secretary and current ICC chairman Jay Shah but was left impressed with his "honesty" and resolve to do things "properly". Ganguly and Shah were colleagues at the world's richest cricket board from October 2019 to September 2022, navigating a tumultuous phase caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought sporting activity to a grinding halt for few months. "He (Jay) had his own way of doing things but the best thing about him was he wanted to do things properly for Indian cricket," Ganguly told PTI in an exclusive interview at his residence in Kolkata. "See, he had the power, the support, so you expected certain kind of toughness, stubbornness from him but he would do things for Indian cricket," the iconic former captain explained, referring to Shah's status of being the son of Home Minister Amit Shah. It was the first time that both Ganguly and Shah held BCCI positions. Before that, Ganguly had headed the Cricket Association of Bengal, while Shah was an office-bearer in the Gujarat Cricket Association. While Ganguly was replaced by another former Test player Roger Binny in 2022, Shah continued as BCCI secretary till November 2024 before taking over as the youngest ever ICC chairman at 36 years of age. Asked about how the power dynamics and relationship was between the scion of a political family and a celebrated cricket star, Ganguly said they shared a cordial equation which has continued to this date.
