KL courts fine 10 people for giving false info to adopt children
The group, comprising nine men and a woman, were slapped with fines between RM700 and RM2,000 after confessing to deceiving the authorities when applying for birth certificates and MyKads.
The accused, aged between 55 and 69, were charged separately before six magistrates with offences under the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1957 (Act 299) and National Registration Regulations 1990.
Under Act 299, they were charged under Section 36(b) for wilfully or knowingly furnishing or permitting the false information.
The Act provides for a maximum fine of RM2,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 12 months or both, while the National Registration Regulations provide for a prison term not exceeding three years, a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both.
Two of the accused were also charged under the Birth and Death Registration Act 1957 (Act 299) for providing false information to obtain MyKad for their children.
The accused were arrested at the National Registration Department's Investigation and Enforcement Division, Putrajaya, on Wednesday (May 14) following a probe under Ops Foster 2.0.
A few of the accused were represented by counsel from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
Another operation carried out last month, dubbed Ops Foster 1.0, also saw a group of 15 Malaysian parents levelled with fines for faking their adopted children's identity over 20 years ago for similar offences in Kuala Lumpur.
Earlier in May, The Star reported that the National Registration Department said that more people are expected to be charged in connection with the investigation into birth certificates containing false details.
According to the department, a total of 159 birth certificates have been identified as containing discrepancies.
The department also announced a phased implementation of the overall operations, which will result in the prosecution of more people under similar laws.
The NRD said the identity cards of the children affected will be revoked pending the amendments to the birth certificates.
The department also informed The Star that one of the options being considered is the issuance of temporary identity cards for the children, referred to as MyKas.
'However, the issuance of MyKas is under the purview of the Home Minister,' said the department.
MyKas is issued under Regulation 5(3) of the National Registration Regulations 1990.

RM44.3mil seizures to be burnt

City police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the items were seized in various operations linked to 21,293 investigation papers that had gone through the prosecution process in court between 2009 and 2024. He said the drugs included methamphetamine, cannabis, cocaine, ketamine and other substances, weighing a total of 839kg, along with 1,345 litres in liquid form. Comm Fadil said the items will be disposed of at a scheduled waste-to-energy incinerator that produces new energy in a regulated and pollution-free manner. 'The disposal will be conducted at a waste treatment centre at Ladang Tanah Merah A3 Division in Bukit Pelandok, Negri Sembilan,' he told reporters after attending the KL Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department case item disposal ceremony yesterday. On the 'Justice for Zara' gathering held outside a shopping mall here last Saturday, Comm Fadil said the situation was under control. 'No offences were detected during the gathering,' he said, adding that police would continue to closely monitor future gatherings and work with the community to maintain order. Comm Fadil reminded the public that any violation of the law would be taken seriously. The gathering was held in support of bullying victim Zara Qairina Mahathir, who was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Sabah on July 16 and died in hospital the following day. At the Children's Court in Kota Kinabalu yesterday, five teenagers pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, read together with Section 35, for using abusive words against the victim. Drugs worth over RM10mil seized in follow-up raid

In a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters here yesterday, he said five suspects were arrested following additional investigations into a drug syndicate. 'This syndicate is part of a larger one that we busted this year in March. 'Then we smashed around half of the larger group and this is the follow-up from our arrests then. 'On Aug 18, police conducted four raids in the Klang Valley leading to the arrest of five people aged between 33 and 64,' he said. Raids were conducted in Puchong and Sri Petaling, and also included two houses. 'The last raid at a car park near the Sri Petaling LRT station led to the arrest of the coordinator of the syndicate,' he said, adding that the drugs were packed inside dried durian packages in an attempt to cover their tracks. In total, police found 425.25kg of suspected methamphetamine (syabu) worth RM13.6mil. All of the suspects were found to have committed criminal and narcotics-related offences, with one being found to have 13 prior cases. 'We believe there are more members linked to this group, and we will track them down. 'The coordinator, we believe, also reports to someone higher,' he said, adding that the drug was believed to have been marketed at Klang Valley, as well as Sabah and Sarawak. 'So far, we have detected drugs being sent over there via air transport,' he said. All suspects have been remanded until Aug 25.
