Air India says no issues found in Boeing 787, Boeing 737 fuel control switches
Air India operates a fleet of Boeing 787 twin-aisle jets on its long-haul operations, while low-cost unit Air India Express operates the Boeing 737 single-aisle jets.
The probe into the Air India flight that crashed and killed 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 on the ground, is centred around the fuel control switches on the Boeing 787 jetliner.
A final report into the incident is expected within a year of the accident.
The switches regulate fuel flow into a plane's engines. They are used by pilots to start or shut down engines on the ground or to manually shut down or restart engines if an engine failure occurs during a flight.

BCA to start independent investigations into Tanjong Katong sinkhole incident
SINGAPORE: The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said on Monday (Jul 28) it is starting an independent investigation into the Tanjong Katong sinkhole incident, now that the ground situation has been stabilised. 'The investigation will examine the circumstances leading to the formation of the sinkhole, identify the root causes, and take the necessary actions against any non-compliance under the Building Control Act and Regulations,' BCA said in a media statement. The agency said investigations could take several months, given the complexity of the incident. 'It will include detailed geotechnical analysis and other validation tests by BCA and its appointed consultants,' BCA added. The sinkhole appeared along Tanjong Katong Road South on Saturday evening, causing a car to fall in. The female driver was rescued by workers and taken conscious to Raffles Hospital. BCA said that since the incident, its engineers have been conducting round-the-clock site monitoring to ensure that surrounding buildings, roads and infrastructure remain structurally safe. 'As a precautionary measure, BCA had recommended that PUB implement a safety time-out for similar sewer construction projects across Singapore, and conduct a thorough review of current practices and safeguards at these worksites,' it added. PUB said on Sunday that it called for a safety timeout to review similar sewer works. It said works near the sinkhole involved the construction of a 16m-deep shaft connecting three existing sewer lines. Providing a timeline of what happened, PUB said that a concrete component in the shaft failed at around 5.50pm on Saturday. At around the same time, a sinkhole formed on the adjacent road. PUB said it was still not clear what contributed to the failure of the component. "The shaft has been backfilled to stabilise the surrounding ground," it said on Sunday.

COE quota to increase by 2.6% for August to October
SINGAPORE: The overall supply of Certificates of Entitlement (COE) for the August to October period will go up by nearly 2.6 per cent compared with the previous quarter, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Monday (Jul 28). The total number of COEs will rise to 18,701, up from 18,232 during the period from May to July, which had seen a 6 per cent increase. Compared with the same period last year - Aug 2024 to Oct 2024 - there is an increase of more than 22 per cent in the quota. The quota for Categories A, B and C will inch up by about 1 per cent, while that of Category E will rise by about 27 per cent. The quota for Category D will remain unchanged. Bidding under the new quota will start on Aug 4. The COE quota for the bidding period of November 2025 to January 2026 will be announced in October, said LTA. The COE quota consists of the following components: 25 per cent of the replacement COEs from vehicles deregistered in the 12-month period from July 2024 to June 2025 Provision for 0.25 per cent per annum growth for Category C based on the Category C vehicle population as at Dec 31, 2024. Adjustments for changes in the taxi population, expired Temporary COEs, Early Turnover Scheme for commercial vehicles, redistribution from guaranteed deregistrations for Category A, Category B and Category D and injection of additional COEs. LTA announced in October last year that up to 20,000 additional COEs will be progressively injected across all vehicle categories from February over 'the next few years'. The move was made in view of the implementation of ERP 2.0.

Musk says Tesla, Samsung Electronics sign chip supply deal
SEOUL :Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Monday that the U.S. automaker has signed a deal to source chips from Samsung Electronics, a move expected to bolster the South Korean tech giant's loss-making contract manufacturing business. On Saturday, Samsung announced a $16.5 billion chip supply deal with a major global company, without naming the client. It said the customer had requested confidentiality about the details of the deal, which will run through the end of 2033. Three sources briefed about the matter told Reuters that Tesla was the customer for the deal. The deal comes as Samsung faces mounting pressure in the race to produce artificial intelligence chips, where it trails rivals such as TSMC and SK Hynix. This lag has weighed heavily on its profits and share price. Samsung, the world's top memory chip maker, also makes logic chips designed by customers through its foundry business. Pak Yuak, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, said the latest deal would help reduce losses at Samsung's foundry business, which he estimated exceeded 5 trillion won ($3.63 billion) in the first half of the year.
