"Canadian govt unequivocally stands against terrorism": PM Mark Carney calls Kanishka bombing "deadliest attack" in Canada's history
Ottawa [Canada], June 24 (ANI): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has described the Air India 182 Kanishka bombing as the 'deadliest attack' in the country's history and said that the Canadian government 'unequivocally stands against terrorism.'
In a post on X, Carney stated, '40 years ago, Canada faced the deadliest terrorist attack in its history. Today, we mourn the 268 Canadian victims of the Air India bombing and all who have been killed in acts of terrorism -- a sombre reminder of our commitment to fight violent extremism and keep Canadians safe.'

On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 was blown up by the Canada-based Khalistani terrorist group Babbar Khalsa near Cork, resulting in the deaths of all 329 passengers on board.
Mark Carney expressed Canada's commitment to work with its allies and partners to detect, prevent and respond to the threat of terrorism and violent extremism.
In a statement on the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism, Carney stated, 'As we mark the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism, we remember the victims of the Air India bombing and all others who have lost their lives to terrorism. Canada will continue to work with our allies and partners, at home and around the world, to better detect, prevent, and respond to the threat of terrorism and violent extremism.'
'Canada's new government unequivocally stands against terrorism, and we will deliver on our mandate of change to keep communities safe,' he added.
Canada's Conservative Party leader, Pierre Poilievre, called the Kanishka bombing 'the worst mass murder' in history. He expressed the Conservative Party's commitment to defeating terrorism, protecting the innocent, and upholding freedom. 'Today we remember the 329 innocent lives lost in the Air India Flight 182 bombing--most of them Canadians. It remains the worst mass murder in our history. On the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism, we remember these souls and resolve to fight terrorism at home and abroad, in all its forms. Canada's Conservatives will always be committed to defeating terrorism, protecting the innocent and upholding freedom,' Poilievre posted on X.

On Monday, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, joined Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin to pay tribute to the Kanishka victims at the Ahakista Memorial in Ireland. During the event, the three leaders laid a wreath at the Ahakiska Memorial to pay homage to the victims.
During the event, the Mayor of the County of Cork, Councillor Joe Carroll, laid a wreath at the Ahakista Memorial in Cork. People in large numbers were present to pay tribute to the victims of the Kanishka bombing. School students also paid musical tribute to victims at the Ahakista Memorial in Cork. (ANI)

Regulations say it should be red on each end, white in the middle with a red maple leaf. Yet, for some reason on the @Canada X account with 1.1 million followers, a flag was posted with the red ends in rainbow colours which are synonymous with the Pride month of June. Calgarian told to remove Canadian flags by condo board
Article content A senior in Calgary's southeast is left wondering why his condo board is no longer allowing him to display Canadian flags on his property. Article content Jim McLeman, 78, is the retired owner of a 14th floor suite in The Lookout, located at 801 Second Ave. S.W. Article content Article content Despite displaying Canadian flags outside of his property for around two decades, he was surprised to hear that his condo board had a bylaw that outlined a zero-tolerance policy for flags. Article content Article content The flag flap comes as Canada Day, the celebration embracing the country's colours and flag, approaches. Article content McLeman originally bought the property back in 1998 and moved in after the building was constructed in 2000. Every summer, he would proudly display a few of his Canadian flags. Article content Originally, he had three flags on display. Now, he only has a single flag situated on the corner of his patio. Article content The three-by-five-foot Canadian flag is attached to a broom handle, which is secured to a post. Article content After receiving an email notifying him of the violation, he searched for answers as to why this was suddenly an issue. Article content 'They haven't said what the penalty would be,' he said. 'They just said I was violating the Board of Condos' bylaws.' Article content It outlined that an anonymous individual brought this to the board's attention, and that their bylaws prohibit the display of flags since it can face challenges if it allows one but not another. Article content Article content An annual general meeting for condo owners and tenants took place on June 19, but McLeman was unable to attend due to his wife suffering from end-stage Parkinson's. Article content Additionally, he would have been unable to address it at the meeting, since any unit-specific issues or disputes are addressed outside of the meeting. Article content 'I thought that this could've been brought up with owners at the meeting, but I guess they feel it's not the time or place,' he said. Article content As an immigrant from the extreme northern end of Scotland, McLeman said he's proud to display the Canadian flag outside of his property. Article content 'I came here back in '67, I was just a 20-year-old kid,' he said. 'I'm proud to be a Canadian. I'm told I cannot fly my country's flag, and I cannot believe it.' Article content 'I'm not a troublemaker, nobody's said anything about it or told me I can't do that,' he said. 'But if there was a good reason, nobody has given me anything.'
