‘Everyone thought I was on the bus': Student stunned after name appears on list of victims in deadly UPSI bus crash

Malay Mail3 hours ago

KOTA BARU, June 9 — A last-minute change of plans saved one Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) student from a nightmare bus ride that has claimed the lives of 15 people today.
Alia, a first-year student, had returned to her hometown but decided to travel back to UPSI last Thursday and celebrate Aidiladha on campus due to personal reasons, Berita Harian reported.
'I was supposed to celebrate Aidiladha in Setiu, Terengganu, and return to campus on that bus last night, but I changed my plans and went back to Sultan Idris Education University earlier instead.
'Then at around 3am today, I was shocked to hear that the bus carrying UPSI students – which I was supposed to be on – was involved in a crash that killed 15 people,' she was quoted as saying.
She said that she received a barrage of calls from people who thought she was on the bus.
She was further taken aback to find out that her name was listed among the bus passengers involved in the 1am accident on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Perak.
'I was stunned and speechless when I found out my friends were involved in the crash.
'In fact, many people thought I was on that bus because my name was there,' she told the Malay newspaper.
She said all the victims onboard were from Besut and Setiu in Terengganu.
A bus carrying UPSI students and a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) collided on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early this morning, killing 15 people and injuring others.
The Civil Defence Force had earlier confirmed the collision involved a total of 48 people.
Several crash victims have been rushed to Gerik Hospital for treatment.
The fate of the MPV occupants is yet unclear.

PETALING JAYA: A cousin of actor and entrepreneur Zoey Rahman was among those killed in the tragic bus crash involving Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, Perak, on Monday (June 9). Zoey, or Mohd Hairey Azhar Abdul Rahman, told he was shocked to receive the news that his cousin had passed away through a family WhatsApp group early in the morning. He mentioned that Fakhrul was returning to UPSI in Tanjung Malim, Perak, from his hometown in Pasir Akar, Jerteh, Terengganu, after celebrating Hari Raya Aidiladha with family. "At first, we didn't know if he was safe, just that 15 people had died. But a few minutes later, we got confirmation that he passed away at the scene," he told mStar. Sharing about his relationship with the deceased, Zoey said they last met during Hari Raya Aidilfitri and said he was close to him and that he had a good character. "I didn't go back to my home town for Aidiladha, and the last time we met was during Aidilfitri. I can describe him as a kind, quiet, and intelligent person," he added. Zoey mentioned that Fakhrul's family had arrived at the hospital to claim the body but had not yet decided on the burial location. "I hope the family remains strong in facing this trial. The body is still at the hospital for a post-mortem. I also hope the family of the deceased and other victims find the strength to endure this test. Tragic bus crash prompt calls from Malaysians for reform

KUALA LUMPUR: The tragic bus crash that claimed the lives of 14 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and a bus attendant has led to widespread grief and outrage online as Malaysian social media users are demanding immediate reforms to prevent similar incidents. Many called for better vetting of commercial vehicle drivers, stricter enforcement, and clearer safety policies, especially concerning night travel for students. Prakash Periah emphasised the importance of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) conducting proper assessments of commercial drivers. 'These evaluations are essential to ensure drivers have the physical, mental, and psychological fitness to operate their vehicles safely, thereby protecting all road users,' he said. Former educator Segaran Nair recalled past Education Ministry directives banning night travel for school-related activities and questioned whether similar rules apply to institutions of higher learning. 'This tragedy, from what we know, involved students chartering a bus to return to campus, a practice that's been around for years,' he said. He added that the physical condition of drivers, often overworked and sleep-deprived, contributes to such incidents. 'This was waiting to happen. Without immediate and firm measures, this will continue, especially with night travel for school-related trips,' he warned. Sitheravellu Sathasivam echoed the call for accountability and investigation. 'This horrific accident happened despite JPJ's warnings and safety measures. The bus company and drivers must be held accountable. An independent investigation is needed to uncover the real cause of this tragedy.' Jackie Chew stressed the importance of enforcing basic safety rules. 'Seat belts can make the difference between life and death,' said Chew, urging authorities to ensure passengers wear them throughout the journey. Tunku Sherie questioned how such tragedies still occur and urged regular driver screening. 'All commercial bus, lorry, and trailer drivers must undergo quarterly vetting by JPJ to ensure they are physically, mentally, and psychologically fit to be responsible for others' lives,' she said. Another social media user, Nazirah Zaini, who passed by the accident site shortly after it occurred, shared her emotional reaction. 'It was heartbreaking. Their friends who survived saw the bodies of their companions laid out right in front of them. Just moments earlier, they were laughing and joking. In a blink, everything changed. My condolences to the families.' Ahmad Sanusi expressed sorrow while calling for infrastructure upgrades. 'It is time the government upgraded the Kota Bharu–Kuala Kangsar road to a four-lane highway. Many main roads in the East Coast are still outdated. This is a matter of national priority and safety,' he said. UPSI confirmed that 42 of its students were on board the bus involved in a fatal collision along the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, Perak, at about 1.10am on Monday (June 9). The university's Corporate Communication Division said that although 44 students were originally scheduled to travel, two did not board the bus. A preliminary report has been received, and UPSI has assured that follow-up action is being taken. An operations room has also been activated to assist families. Gerik Hospital is currently treating the injured, with seven students in critical condition (red zone), 20 in semi-critical condition (yellow zone), and six in stable condition (green zone). Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Kadir expressed their condolences to the victims' families and assured them of government assistance. UPSI Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff also conveyed the university's grief and support for the affected families.
