Italy's Paolo Sorrentino, US star Dafoe honoured at Sarajevo Film Fest

Reuters15 hours ago
SARAJEVO, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Oscar-winning Italian director Paolo Sorrentino will be honoured at the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival, which kicks off on Friday, alongside star actors Willem Dafoe, Ray Winstone and Stellan Skarsgard.
Sorrentino - known for "Il Divo", "The Hand of God" and "The Great Beauty", which was recognised as best foreign language film at the 2014 Academy Awards - will get the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the event which will show a retrospective of his films.
"Paolo Sorrentino managed to do what every filmmaker dreams of – he left a global impact through local, personal stories, festival director Jovan Marjanovic said in a statement.
U.S. actor Dafoe - who turned 70 last month and has starred in everything from "Poor Things" to "Spider-Man" - will also get an Honorary Heart, as will Britain's Winstone and Sweden's Skarsgard.
More than 250 films will be shown at the festival, which was founded by a group of movie enthusiasts towards the end of Bosnia's 1992-95 war.
Black comedy "Pavilion" by Bosnian film and theatre director Dino Mustafic will open the programme. It is the only Bosnian film made this year, reflecting the parlous state of the Balkan country's industry and a lack of government support, the association of Bosnia's film directors said this week.
Ukrainian film director Sergei Loznitsa will chair the festival jury. Nine co-productions from southern, central and eastern Europe will compete for the best feature film award, selector Elma Tataragic said.
The festival will show a selection of Arab cinematography in cooperation with the Doha Film Institute, including one showing footage of life in Gaza in the early 2000s.

Concessions review – moviegoer melancholy for Michael Madsen's final film

The late Michael Madsen makes his final, posthumous appearance as a boozy stuntman called Rex Fuel in this laidback ensemble film from feature first-timer Mas Bouzidi, a piece of moviegoing melancholy developed from the director's short of the same title. Bouzidi gives us the time-honoured scenario of a smalltown movie theatre's last day before closing down, resonantly named the Royal Alamo and showing for its last stand a couple of films on 35mm. The place has been stricken, of course, by the prevalence of digital streaming, although the wistful mood doesn't seem too different from Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show from 1971, when Netflix wasn't a problem. The Royal Alamo is now a bittersweet place of memories whose spirit is perhaps epitomised by the two guys listlessly working at the concessions stand, and bickering amusingly like Kevin Smith's Clerks. ('That movie where Johnny Depp played the creepy paedophile … ', 'Willy Wonka?', 'Yeah') The title might imply that some concessions are metaphorical. Perhaps doing a dull job is a concession made in return for privileged access to the dream factory. One is Hunter (Rob Riordan), who can't believe he's been wasting his life working here since high school and at one moment has the humiliation of having to serve a guy in his class who is now a big deal. Hunter does not, in fact, watch the movies showing at the Royal Alamo, although his final moments are not, in fact, too dissimilar from those of Olivia Colman in Sam Mendes's sadness-of-cinema film Empire of Light. The other concessions guy is Lorenzo (Jonathan Lorenzo Price) who has a football scholarship at Tampa, Florida and so unlike all these other losers, he has a ticket out of this no-hope small town, but confides his own anxieties to Deana (Lana Rockwell) who sells tickets. The place is managed by grumpy Luke (Steven Ogg) whose dad built the place in the early 1970s. Madsen has a cameo playing Fuel, who resembles a character deleted from Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: a cheerful, bleary guy who wanders in and asks Deana – whom he calls 'Toots' – for a free ticket to the movie they're showing because he did the stunts on it; he cordially sidles up to a woman in the auditorium and presents her with his card, in case she should need a stuntman. This good-natured appearance redoubles the film's cinephile tristesse and its ancestor-worship, although maybe this rather familiar subject needs an injection of new ideas that Concessions, however amiable, does not really provide. Concessions screened at the Edinburgh film festival.

He made light work of the ITV show's pyramid - with 29 seconds remaining to answer the £50,000 Catchphrase. At this point, Joe hit a stumbling block as he tried to work out the last puzzle. It first showed various shops, with stop signs on display in the window. The key focus was "Sign World", which had a single stop sign and an arrow pointing to it. Joe initially guessed "Stop sign" and "Only a stop sign", as the clock ticked away. With only four seconds left, the actor correctly answered "One stop shop." It meant Joe scooped £50,000 for his charity - as well as £6,700 he won in earlier rounds. Host Stephen Mulhern said: "Do you know what, that is incredible. Wow, I have never seen it done like that." Joe then revealed he couldn't wait to share the good news with his charity. The multiple choice answers were between G, K, M and W. In the end, and with the £32,000 safe, player Glen had to make a guess and went for G. The 1% Club - Viewers of Lee Mack's popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: "Edna's birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen's birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir's birthday must be the 'X' of January." It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir's birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence. - Viewers of Lee Mack's popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The Chase - The ITV daytime favourite left fans scratching their heads when it threw up one of the most bizarre questions to ever grace the programme. One of the questions asked the player: "Someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid eating what?" The options were - sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots - with Steve selecting sweetcorn but the correct answer was potatoes. Long-time soap fans will remember Joe as EastEnders' Matthew Rose from 1997 to 2000. The character feuded with Steve Owen (Martin Kemp) - who memorably framed him for murder. Elsewhere, Joe recently shared a difference between working on the two soaps. Celebrity Catchphrase airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
