The main moments of Paris Couture Week

Yahoo11-07-2025
Paris Haute Couture Week has wrapped up after four days of shows that featured the end of an era at Balenciaga, the start of a new one at Maison Margiela, and some surprise appearances and absences.
AFP looks back on the key moments of the Autumn-Winter 2025-2026 season:
- New eras -
Demna bowed out at Balenciaga after a decade in charge with a show on Wednesday that drew the usual smattering of celebrities to the front rows but had some surprise models on the runway.
Kim Kardashian channelled Elizabeth Taylor as she walked the room in a sultry slip dress, while veteran French actress Isabelle Huppert appeared in a turtleneck pulled up to her ears.
Belgian Glenn Martens debuted at Maison Margiela the same day. Critics praised his bold first steps as a replacement for British design legend John Galliano, who stepped down in January.
The New York Times called Martens' "Artisanal" collection, which included thrifted clothing, a "brilliant no-holds-barred debut" while Women's Wear Daily said it "tilted the Paris house in a dark, daring and DIY direction".
- Armani's absence -
One notably absentee was Giorgio Armani, 91, who had already cancelled his menswear show in Milan due to health reasons.
He also missed the Paris Armani Prive show on doctors' orders.
"In 20 years of Armani Prive, it's the first time I'm not in Paris," he said in a statement sent to AFP.
"My doctors advised more rest, even though I felt ready."
He added that he had "followed and overseen every aspect of the show remotely", stressing: "I approved and signed off on everything you will see."
- Cardi B's couture -
New York rapper Cardi B had a busy week in Paris and seemed intent on out-couturing many of the models.
She appeared at the opening show of the week on Monday at Schiaparelli in a traf
fic-stopping tasselled neckpiece and posed with a crow perched on her hand outside the Petit Palais exhibition space.
The next day, she turned heads at Stephane Rolland, with a sculptural black headpiece that surrounded her like a religious shroud.
On Wednesday she was front row at Balenciaga.
- The rose trend -
Floral patterns were everywhere, with the rose especially dominant.
Giambattista Valli adorned airy gowns with oversized fabric roses, Elie Saab featured them on princess-style dresses, while Armani Prive used pearl-embroidered roses.
Balenciaga incorporated rose sequin prints into a skirt suit and Robert Wun showcased black-and-white roses on a structured strapless crinoline dress.
- Best of the rest -
Syrian designer Rami Al Ali made history as the first couturier from his country to take part in the official Paris calendar, choking back tears at the end of his show of exquisitely tailored pieces.
Dutch duo Viktor & Rolf delivered a typically playful and sculptural spectacle, while Hong Kong's Robert Wun burnished his reputation further with some striking looks inspired by cinema and theatre.

What Does Your European Vacation Destination Say About You?

I am not presently on a yacht, enjoying a Euro summer. This is funny, because everyone else seems to be on a goddamn yacht, enjoying their Euro summer: Dua Lipa, Kylie Jenner, Dakota Johnson, Charles LeClerc, that beauty micro-influencer I sat next to at a dinner party in SoHo once. She was dating my guy friend's college roommate and we talked about Sofia Coppola's collaboration with Augustinus Bader, which somehow led to us following each other on Instagram? Anyway, two weeks later they broke up, and we've never seen each other again. But she keeps posting pictures of herself on a unicorn pool toy somewhere in the Tyrrhenian with a totally new guy. Good for her. I'll spare you what I'm doing this summer instead (office, spotted lantern flies, hazes of existential dread in subway cars without air-conditioning), but I will say this: Every night, in my New York City apartment, I scroll through it all. Not just the boats, but the villas in St. Tropez; the beach clubs in Ibiza; the girls who treat Cartier Love bracelets like they're bangles from Claire's, but keep asking if anyone wants to sublet their Nolita apartment for three weeks in August. It's a strange feeling, being stuck in this uncanny vacation valley. Once you view one post of the Hôtel du Cap or Le Sirenuse or Scorpios, the algorithm keeps sending you more. Suddenly, a lifestyle very few people can afford begins to feel like a lifestyle that everyone has…except for you. And I think about how eerie it is that we're constantly bombarded with cyber versions of the sirent from Greek myth: beautiful, alluring, visions that, if you aren't careful, will lead you to ruin. But then I turn my brain off, throw on The Summer I Turned Pretty, and decide to be a little bitchy instead. Below, my musings on what your European summer vacation says about you. If you're offended, just remember…your credit card limit is likely triple mine. St. Tropez 'But babe, I want to go to Shellona. BLOND:ISH is playing,' your girlfriend* says as the tender approaches. 'I told you already,' you say back, exasperated. 'They couldn't do a 3:30 seating. So we're going to Cinquante Cinq.'

English Pickleball Open has International Player Growth On Display

This past weekend, one of the largest tournaments in the world was competed; the 2025 English Open, featuring more than 2,200 players from across the globe. Thanks to a newly renewed partnership (announced in June and covered in this space), top players from The Association of Pickleball Players (APP)'s pro and NextGen ranks made the trip across the pond to compete. Here's a quick recap of the major pro events, to see how the domestic pros fared against their international brethren. Pickleball England uses a proprietary tournament management system called the Event Registration system to run its events: the entire detailed slate of match results from all amateur and pro events are available at this link. Men's Pro Singles Recap Ronan Cameron topped surprise finalist Hungarian Balint Bako 6,3 in the Singles final. Bako shocked pre-tourney favorite Jack Munro in the 16s and had a comprehensive 3,3 win in the semis over veteran Ryler DeHeart to earn his spot in the title match. DeHeart salvaged the bronze by topping Mauro Garcia, a teenaged Spaniard who beat both Richard Livornese and Jaylen Broderick in the earlier rounds of the knockouts. Women's Pro Singles Recap The APP's top female singles player Sofia Sewing, who's won four APP singles golds already this year, beat the top Croatian Domenika Turkovic 6,6 for the title. Semi-finalists were England's Katie Morris and Holland's Roos Van Rink, giving the podium quite the international flair. Fudge had to advance past her husband early in the knockouts, taking out DeHeart & Sewing in the 16s on their way to the gold. Men's Pro Doubles Recap Jack Munro secured a double gold for the weekend on Saturday, winning the Men's doubles title with Richard Livornese. They topped two traveling Americans in the final in Aidan Schenk & Clayton Powell, both teenagers hailing from Oregon. Special shout-out to Rob Nunnery, who's easing back into competitive pickleball after some major medical life changes; he lost in the semis with partner Ryler DeHeart. Women's Pro Doubles Recap Both Fudge and Sewing made it a two-gold weekend by pairing together to take the Women's pro doubles title. They topped Van Reek & Australian Kaitlynn Hart in the final, two players who feature prominently in the professional game in Australia. Next up on the Pickleball Calendar? According to my Master Pickleball Schedule the MLP playoffs pick up this weekend. Next up for the APP? They're right back in action this coming weekend for the 2025 Great Lakes Open at a new venue in Midland, Michigan.
