Where to Eat: When you're in Philly

Destination Dining
A weekly guide to dining in a different U.S. city, just in time for the summer travel season.
Regan here — food writer and Philly native. There are a few more days until the solstice makes it officially summer, but the season is already in full swing across the City of Brotherly Love: Locals are gathering in Rittenhouse Square and Clark Park, John's Water Ice is slinging overfilled cups, and diners are lingering over meals a little longer. Join them, armed with The Times's updated list of the 25 best restaurants in Philadelphia, right now.
You'll see familiar spots, including Royal Sushi & Izakaya — look out for the chef Jesse Ito's new izakaya, Dance Robot, later this summer — and Mawn, a B.Y.O.B. destination for punchy Cambodian fare and the sister restaurant to the hotly anticipated Sao, a new crudo and oyster bar. We've also added a handful of newcomers to the list; here's a preview.
I suggest planning your Philly eating schedule around multiple visits to the Italian all-day cafe Fiore. First thing in the morning, order a shakerato and buttery cornetti, which the co-owner and pastry chef Justine MacNeil, a Del Posto alum, makes in a three-day process using a sourdough starter and a dash of vanilla and rum. Prefer a savory start? Ask for a breakfast sandwich like the Saltie, an ode to the now-shuttered Brooklyn sandwich shop of the same name, made with scrambled eggs and whipped ricotta layered on house-baked focaccia. For lunch or dinner, try housemade pasta dishes such as fettuccine with green asparagus ragù, or rosy pink mezzaluna with beets. If you can't squeeze in a second visit, though, you don't have to miss out — at Fiore, pasta, including cacio e pepe, is for breakfast, too.

‘Ironheart' Will Continue Tony Stark's Legacy, and Robert Downey Jr. Approves

'I want to continue Stark's legacy,' says Riri Williams, the main character in the upcoming Marvel Studios show Ironheart. Played by Dominique Thorne, Riri is a genius inventor, just like the late, great Iron Man, but without his billionaire resources. That conflict will be at the heart of the new show, which debuts on Disney+ June 24, and Tony Stark himself just endorsed it. Two fantastic Ironheart videos just came online, one of which focuses on the practical suits built for the production. Executive producer Ryan Coogler, who introduced Riri in his film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, chimes in along with other members of the creative team. Here's where we get to see Riri really try and be the MCU's next Tony Stark. Gear up for a behind-the-scenes look at how Riri's suit came to life—straight from the filmmakers and special effects team behind Marvel Television's #Ironheart. Streaming June 24 on @DisneyPlus. — Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) June 17, 2025 In reality, though, we know that the next Tony Stark isn't Tony Stark at all. He's Doctor Doom. Robert Downey Jr. is currently in London filming Avengers: Doomsday, where he plays the titular villain, and the actor chimed in from the set to give his approval to Ironheart during an interview with Good Morning America. The full interview is below, but we've cued it right up to Downey's bit. Now, it's quite clear Downey is reading a pre-written statement there, and to some, that might make it seem forced. But he didn't have to read or record anything at all. If this were a political campaign, Ironheart getting the official backing of the Godfather of the MCU like this would be a big deal. And we still think it's at least a medium-sized deal, just because who better to know stories of geniuses in super suits than Robert Downey Jr.? Ironheart debuts June 24 and is one of only a handful of Marvel Studios shows coming to Disney+ in the next year or so. After this, there's the animated Eyes of Wakanda and Marvel Zombies, followed by Wonder Man in December, season two of Daredevil Born Again, probably sometime next year, and, finally, the Vision show. Will Ironheart be the best of the bunch? What kind of impact, if any, will it have on the MCU? We'll find out soon. Here's a look at the episode titles: Riri's notebook = unlocked. 🔓 Check out the official #Ironheart episode guide and stream on @DisneyPlus starting June 24. — Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) June 17, 2025

Couple elope at Chickie's & Pete's in Northeast Philadelphia: "It's about who you're with"

Crab fries, crab legs and true love set the stage for the elopement of newlyweds Heather Hanson and Eric Ghegan. Instead of going with a traditional wedding, they opted for a venue near and dear to their hearts: Chickie's & Pete's on Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia. The source of inspiration for the couple? They said it was their desire for a personal, intimate wedding amid rising costs. "It's not about how much money you spend or how big the party is, it's about who you're with," Hanson said. Chickie's & Pete's is a Philadelphia-based restaurant and bar known for its "Crab fries." The restaurant serves as a fan hub, especially for Philly sports fans on game days. But on a fateful Saturday night, a booth turned into a wedding venue. Chickie's & Pete's "Growing up, I never thought my wedding would be at a local restaurant. Every girl wants that big fairytale wedding, but it was absolutely beautiful. They made it feel so special," Hanson said. The newlyweds grew up as best friends and officially began dating following Ghegan's time in the Army. "It ended up lining up. We hit it off. We actually went to Chickie's & Pete's straight from the airport ... it's like he never left," Hanson said. The whole elopement was captured on video, racking up thousands of supportive comments. Some big-name witnesses even made an appearance on the day. Heather Hanson "So, the original Pete's grandson, Pete, and the GM — they were all so excited and so enthusiastic when we told them they had to sign our stuff. Obviously, they had never done that before," Hanson said. The elopement will forever live on in Chickie's & Pete's history — photos of the milestone will hang on a wall inside the restaurant. "I recommend everyone do it because it was a good time, it really was," Ghegan said. CBS News Philadelphia intern Sydney-Leigh Brockington contributed to this story.

Elon, Inc: Can ‘MAMUWT' Be to Musk What ‘TACO' Is to Trump?

On this week's episode of Elon, Inc., host David and Max chat about the latest Musk-Trump drama. A detente had just emerged when we last recorded, and now it feels like it's just a matter of time before Musk (and little X) are back in the Oval Office sparring with reporters (and playing on the floor). Will the apologies help Musk secure eased restrictions for self-driving cars and access to Star Wars 2.0 (Trump's 'golden dome' project)? And will Max and David be able to introduce MAMUWT (Musk Always Makes Up With Trump) into the lexicon alongside TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out)? What about MADRA (Musk Always Delays Robotaxi Announcements)? Meanwhile, xAI is in talks to raise $4.3 billion (on top of the $5 billion it's been trying to raise) since the company has already spent most of the $14 billion it previously raised. Commitments on the debt sale are due Tuesday. Bloomberg's Carmen Arroyo joins the crew to break down what it means for the future of Musk's company.
