In Liberia's version of baseball, there are no bats and no men
Kickball in Liberia has the rules of baseball, but there are no bats, and players kick a soccer ball instead of the larger lightweight ball used for the game in other places. There also are no men. 'In Liberia, (kickball) is our tradition,' said Jimmie, who noted many girls start playing kickball from an early age. 'This is why you see women playing kickball in Liberia.'

How kickball came to Liberia: In 1964, Peace Corps volunteer Cherry Jackson noticed that unlike boys, the students at the all-girls school where she taught in Monrovia, the capital, didn't play any sports, according to Emmanuel Whea, president of Liberia's National Kickball League. Jackson, an American, tried to teach the girls baseball but quickly realized they were much better at hitting the ball with their feet. That was the start of what became a custom for girls in the country of about 5.6 million people. 'When you're a girl growing up in Liberia, you will play kickball,' Whea said. Kickball is played in other parts of the world, including in the United States, where it is a common elementary school game for girls and boys. But only in Liberia is there a women-only professional league.
A league for women and peace: The National Kickball League was created in 1994 to bring people together as Liberia was reeling from a civil war. 'The league was set up to bring the ladies together and use them (as part of) the reconciliation process of Liberia,' Whea said. 'We had just left the civil war, and everybody had just scattered… So kickball was one of those sports used to bring Liberians together so they could have the time to hear the peace messages.' Whea has big plans for the league, including expanding it to men and introducing the game to other African countries. However, his mission has been complicated by a lack of resources, especially in a region where women's sports often are underfunded.
Saydah A. Yarbah, a 29-year-old mother of two, admits it is hard to make ends meet on her athlete's salary despite playing kickball for 10 years. 'Her earnings are not even near what male athletes earn,' she said.
An all-women sport headed by men: In Liberia, many sports, including soccer, are male-dominated. Despite kickball being a sport played by women, the league is led by men, from the coaches to the referees and league officials. 'The league encourages women, but they really don't want to be coaches,' Whea said. 'Their husbands might have a problem with them working full time, (and) for some, their relationship will not allow it,' he said. Yarbah plans to change that narrative by becoming a coach when she retires, allowing her to share her passion for the sport with others, including her two sons, she said. 'They are not going to play kickball for now,' she said. 'But probably in the future, they are going to introduce kickball to men.'
For the moment, kickball remains a women's game. 'Men sometimes come during their practice,' Yarbah said, 'but they do not stand a chance. They don't know the techniques of the game,' she said. 'So we always win.'

It's been a quarter century since an American League pitcher won back-to-back Cy Young Awards. It takes a pretty special pitcher to pull that off – but Tarik Skubal fits the bill. Skubal showed why he's the favorite to win the Cy Young for a second straight year, striking out 11 with no walks Sunday night in Detroit's 2-1 victory over Texas. If the Cy Young indeed goes to him, he'll be the first AL pitcher to earn it in back-to-back seasons since Pedro Martinez's remarkable stretch with the Red Sox in 1999 and 2000. Roger Clemens won consecutive Cy Youngs on two different occasions (1986-87 and 1997-98) and Jim Palmer did it in 1975 and 76. Those are the only AL pitchers besides Martinez to pull that off. It's been a bit more common in the National League: Greg Maddux (1992-95) and Randy Johnson (1999-2002) both won four straight, and Tim Lincecum (2008-09), Clayton Kershaw (2013-14), Max Scherzer (2016-17), and Jacob deGrom (2018-19) are in the two-in-a-row club. National Leaguer Sandy Koufax won the Cy Young in 1965 and 1966 back when there was only one award for both leagues. Majors-best tigers end 6-game skid with all-star tarik skubal's strong start
It was naturally a superb start by Tarik Skubal that resulted in a 2–1 Detroit Tigers win over the Texas Rangers on Sunday night that ended a season-worst six-game losing streak for the team with the best record in the major leagues. However, Skubal didn't get credit for the victory. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and starter in Tuesday's All-Star Game cruised into the seventh inning with a two-hit shutout and a tenuous 1–0 lead. He left with runners at the corners and two outs, and the Rangers' Adolis García scored on a wild pitch by Tyler Holton. But Detroit's Matt Vierling hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning, and Will Vest entered in the eighth and got four straight outs–against the top four batters in Texas' order–for his 16th save for the Tigers (60–40). Skubal left the park still with 10 wins (one shy of the AL lead), 164 strikeouts (one behind Boston's Garrett Crochet), and a 2.19 ERA (tied with Crochet for the best in the American League). 'Were the first to 60, right?' That matters more (than his personal stats), Skubal said. 'We just haven't particularly been playing our best baseball, I don't think, for the last couple weeks. That's just part of the season. Not from lack of effort or anything like that. But I knew I wanted to win today. I expect every time I go out there to put our team in position to win, and we were able to do that.' Skubal struck out 11 and walked none in his seventh double-digit strikeout game this season. Brewers sweep Dodgers, extend win streak to 10 games

Coming off his first All-Star appearance, Ryan (10-4) gave up one run and five hits with no walks. The right-hander worked a scoreless fourth inning with two strikeouts in the All-Star Game last Tuesday night at Atlanta. Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Twins. Matt Wallner hit a two-run homer off starter Germán Márquez (3-11) in the third, and Harrison Bader added a solo shot for the Twins. ORIOLES 5 RAYS 2Jackson Holliday, Alex Jackson, and Ryan OHearn homered to lead Baltimore to a rain-delayed win over Tampa Bay. The game at George M. Steinbrenner Field was delayed for 2 hours 36 minutes before the seventh inning. Holliday hit his 13th homer of the season on the second pitch of the game from Tampa Bay's Ryan Pepiot (6-8). Jackson opened a three-run third with his first home run of the season, and OHearn's shot in the sixth was his 12th of the season.
