What are Rare Earth Magnets and why are they critical?
Rare earth magnets are made from alloys of rare earth elements. They are integral to Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), which are widely used in EVs for their high torque, energy efficiency, and compact size. Hybrid vehicles also rely on them for efficient propulsion. In Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles, their use is primarily limited to electric power steering and other motorized systems. Elements like Dysprosium (Dy), Terbium (Tb), Neodymium (Nd), and Praseodymium (Pr) are crucial for these magnets, especially in high-performance applications.
China's dominance and new restrictions
China is the world's dominant exporter of rare earth magnets, controlling over 70% of global Rare Earth Element (REE) production and over 90% of refining capacity. In April 2025, Beijing imposed stricter export controls on seven rare earth elements and finished magnets, mandating export licenses. This revised framework demands detailed end-use disclosures and client declarations, including confirmation that products will not be used in defense or re-exported to the US. This added scrutiny has prolonged the clearance process to at least 45 days, leading to significant delays and a growing backlog that is tightening global supply chains.
Impact on the Indian automotive sector
India, which sourced over 80% of its approximately 540 tonnes of magnet imports from China last fiscal year, has begun to feel the pinch. By the end of May 2025, despite nearly 30 import requests from Indian companies being endorsed by the Indian government, none had received approval from Chinese authorities, and no shipments had arrived.

The decision follows China's recent export curbs on rare earth elements—key materials employed in manufacturing magnets for electric motors. Although the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has yet to formally request a policy change, key stakeholders have raised concerns in closed-door discussions with government officials, a report by Bloomberg stated. But China's April crackdown on rare earth exports compelled Indian automakers to rethink their strategy. Since rare earth-based permanent magnets are the foundation of traction motors, manufacturers now have major challenges in ensuring local content requirements. To dampen the effect, the government has informally guided OEMs to import complete motors or parts assembling in the meanwhile. Suppliers face mounting pressure The change is a significant setback for Indian auto part suppliers who have been investing heavily in bringing forward advanced EV components like Permanent Magnet Synchronous Reluctance Motors (PMSRM) locally. Without the critical raw materials, these suppliers could fall short of being eligible for PLI—just as they were reaching critical milestones. Moreover, waiting on alternatives may further put Indian companies behind international players. Industry sources say shipping a motor via sea adds around ₹ 2,000 per vehicle, while air freight might raise costs by as much as ₹ 5,000 for smaller EVs like two-wheelers. This surge could drive away consumers and impact sales volumes in a price-sensitive nation such as India. India's push toward EV self-sufficiency now faces a steep climb. Unless Indian supply chains are able to rapidly redirect or identify different sources of rare earths, relaxing localization targets will be the only way to maintain momentum in the near term. The Nifty declined for two straight sessions, closing the week on a weak note as Israel launched a fresh offensive on Iran, prompting retaliation and escalating concerns of wider regional conflict. While India remains uninvolved directly, the economic ripples are hard to ignore. Brent crude spiked nearly 13% on Friday, briefly nearing $80/barrel—just days after hovering near $60. This surge in oil prices raised alarm bells across Dalal Street, with fears of higher inflation, a widening import bill, and possible dilution of RBI's recent monetary policy measures. The Nifty did show some resilience by bouncing back 250 points from its intraday low of 24,472 on Friday—defending the crucial May 22 swing low of 24,462. However, the rebound wasn't enough to soothe broader concerns. With global markets reacting sharply—Dow Jones plunging over 700 points and safe havens like gold and bonds rallying—the domestic outlook remains shaky. One major drag continues to be the Nifty Bank index, which has corrected more than 1,500 points over the past four sessions, giving up all post-RBI policy gains and slipping toward the psychological 55,000 mark. Technical analysts now peg this level as critical support, with resistance seen at 56,000. Rajesh Bhosale of Angel One highlighted that Nifty remains rangebound between 24,450–25,200, with key support at 24,400–24,450 aligned with its 50-day moving average. A move above 24,825 and reclaiming 25,000 is crucial for bullish momentum. "We maintain a cautious stance and advise a wait-and-watch approach," he added. Vaishali Parekh of Prabhudas Lilladher echoed similar views, noting that only a decisive breakout above 25,000 would signal a trend reversal, while 24,000 remains a vital support zone for market stability. Nandish Shah from HDFC Securities warned that breaching 24,462 could intensify sell-offs, with the next downside target at 24,164. On the upside, resistance levels are noted at 24,847 and 24,936. Meanwhile, Om Mehra from SAMCO Securities emphasized the importance of defending 55,000 on the Nifty Bank, with a break below that increasing downside risks. A sustained close above 56,000 could revive bullish sentiment. As the conflict evolves, investors are advised to remain cautious. Unless tensions ease before Monday's open, volatility could persist, with global cues likely to dominate trade direction.
