The #FemEffect addresses menstrual health access

News242 days ago

Femagene is excited to announce the launch of its new campaign, #FemEffect. This initiative focuses on helping women feel confident and in control of their lives, with the belief that when women are empowered, they can achieve anything.
At the core of the campaign is a simple yet impactful effort: for every Femagene product purchased, a menstrual cup will be donated to a woman in need. In partnership with Ubuntu, a non-profit organisation, Femagene is working to ensure that all women have access to the tools they need to manage their menstrual health in a sustainable and dignified way.
'We're committed to supporting women's health and ensuring no woman has to struggle with a lack of access to menstrual care,' says Lindie Pretorius at Femagene. 'With #FemEffect, we're not only providing menstrual cups but also making sure that every purchase helps another woman manage her health and future.'
Addressing the Issue of Menstrual Health Access
'Access to menstrual care is a fundamental right, yet many women in South Africa still struggle with managing their periods,' says Ubuntu NPO spokesperson Amkela Makhanya.
'Up to 7 million girls in South Africa lack access to menstrual products, leaving them unprepared for their periods. While there is still much work to be done, we are incredibly grateful to Femagene for their #FemEffect campaign. Their generous donation of menstrual cups is making a tangible difference by helping to reduce stigma and offering a sustainable solution to those who face barriers to menstrual care. It's a step toward breaking the cycle of period poverty'.
Empowering Women Through Confidence – The #FemEffect campaign also aims to encourage women to recognise their strength and feel confident in their everyday lives. As part of the campaign, Femagene is launching a TikTok series hosted by Relebogile Mabotja, featuring influential figures such as Mpoomy Ledwaba, Amanda Dambuza, Pamela Mtanga, and Thobile Khumalo.
These women will share personal stories about body confidence, overcoming societal pressures, dealing with online bullying, setting boundaries, and more. The series is designed to inspire women to be confident and take control of their lives.

'Confidence is more than just appearance, it's about how women show up and claim their space,' says Pretorius. 'When women believe in themselves, they can take on anything, from career changes to managing their health.'
Join the Movement The #FemEffect campaign invites every South African woman to embrace her confidence and take charge of her future. By choosing Femagene, you're not only investing in your own health and well-being but also helping provide sustainable menstrual care to women in need

Want to Start Weight Lifting? These Books Can Help.

For most of modern history, women were warned that lifting heavy weights was unladylike and possibly dangerous. Even as lifting became more culturally acceptable for women in the 1980s, weight rooms largely remained the domain of men. But in recent years, women have begun to discover, en masse, that building muscle can be an essential part of their health and mental well-being. The percentage of women who regularly strength trained grew to nearly 27 percent in 2020, up from 17.5 percent in 2004. And in the last year, a handful of gym chains have replaced some cardio machines with weight lifting equipment to meet the growing demand. This surge has been fueled, in part, by a growing body of research showing that women can benefit from lifting at nearly every age and life stage. As more women discover how good lifting makes them feel, more of them have written about their experiences in the weight room. And while earlier generations of women's fitness books mainly focused on weight loss, the new crop of books encourages women to pursue strength, in and out of the gym. This spring and summer alone, three new books explore what happens when women strive to build muscle. If you're looking for motivation, confidence or guidance on starting or sticking with strength training, here's what you'll find in each one. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

The Lead: Wouter Basson vs HPCSA round two, with Tammy Petersen

The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) continues in 2025 to push for some form of historical accountability from 'Dr Death' Wouter Basson's involvement in the apartheid government's secret chemical and biological warfare programme, 'Project Coast'. But as News24's Cape Town journalist Tammy Petersen reports in this edition of The Lead, the Durbanville-based cardiologist has, at the age of 74, turned to the High Court to get the HPCSA off his back once and for all: 'Dr Basson argues in his court papers that this new bid by the HPCSA is nothing but persecution,' says Petersen. Later in the show, we learn that a former Transnet official is wanted by the police for the mistaken hit on a Vereeniging engineer whose company blew the whistle on procurement corruption. Finally, attorneys for disgraced R&B singer R Kelly claim he's in danger behind bars and argue that he should be put under house arrest. Listen on YouTube: Listen on Apple Podcasts:
