Two held in bribery case in Punjabs Tarn Taran
Chandigarh, Aug 6 (PTI) Two people have been arrested in Punjab's Tarn Taran district for taking a bribe of Rs 37,000, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau said on Thursday.
The accused have been identified as Sawinder Singh, a registry clerk in Bhikhiwind, and Malkeet Singh, a deed writer in Bhikhiwind, an official spokesperson of the VB said.
The accused had demanded a bribe from complainant Gurbhej Singh, a resident of village Bhikhiwind.
Gurbhej Singh stated that during the division of his ancestral land, two kanals and two marlas of his agricultural land were erroneously transferred to his relatives. He had completed all the necessary formalities, including payment of fees to the government treasury, in April, he said.
Despite fulfilling all required procedures and acquiring the necessary stamp papers, he was unable to get his land registry processed.
To get the registry of the said land in his name, he approached Malkeet, the spokesperson added.
Upon enquiring, he found that registry clerk Sawinder Singh was demanding a bribe of Rs 32,000 for processing his case.
Thereafter, he filed a complaint with the VB. PTI CHS NB NB

Jaggayyapet cops bust chain-snatching gang linked to murder plot
Vijayawada: Police in NTR district have arrested three men in connection with a series of gold-chain thefts, uncovering a broader criminal conspiracy that included plans for a targeted murder. During searches, police recovered a stolen motorcycle and three gold chains, weighing a total of 82 grams and valued at approximately Rs 6.5 lakh. The case is linked to an earlier murder in Jaggayyapet's Cheruvu Bazaar, where a temple priest was killed. Investigators identified Bathula Kishore as the primary accused (A1) in that murder. Police now say Kishore himself became the target of a separate murder plot allegedly orchestrated by the priest's brother-in-law, Vemula Tirupathi Rao of Nawabupeta in Penuganchiprolu mandal. According to police, Tirupathi Rao instructed Golla Gopi of Jaggayyapet to eliminate Kishore. Gopi then roped in two former associates — Macha Venkatesh of Kothapeta in Mangalagiri and Pathan Salim Basha of Lakshminarasimha Colony — to carry out the attack. The trio reportedly conducted a night-time reconnaissance at Kishore's residence, but finding him absent, stole his motorcycle and used it to commit a string of chain thefts. They later informed Tirupathi Rao that they intended to proceed with the murder. The thefts were carried out, police said, on the 1st of this month across Nandigama and Jaggayyapet. The trio — Vemula Tirupathi Rao, Macha Venkatesh, and Pathan Salim Basha — were taken into custody on Saturday and questioned, leading to the disclosures outlined by investigators. Police records show that Vemula Tirupathi Rao has an FIR registered at the Penuganchiprolu police station. Macha Venkatesh is linked to seven cases registered across local police stations, including one murder case, while Pathan Salim Basha faces nine cases at Tadepalli and Atkur police stations, the officers said. The three suspects are to be produced before the Jaggayyapet court as the legal process unfolds. Jaggayyapeta police said the probe is ongoing and that Golla Gopi remains at large. Uttarakhand HC orders notice before arrest in fraud cases involving over Rs 19L
Dehradun: Uttarakhand high court (HC) has ruled that a notice must be issued before arresting an accused in a fraud and cheating case involving over Rs 19 lakh. The court directed police to serve a notice under Section 35(3) of the BNSS, which specifies conditions for arrest without a warrant, and to follow the Supreme Court's guidelines in Arnesh Kumar vs State of Bihar, aimed at preventing unnecessary arrests in cases where the maximum punishment is less than seven years. The single bench of Justice Pankaj Purohit delivered the order in connection with the arrest of Pantnagar resident Raghavendra Mishra, accused of defrauding an individual of approximately Rs 19.8 lakh by allegedly impersonating a district magistrate. On July 22, Kashipur resident Jyoti Bisht lodged a complaint at ITI police station in Udham Singh Nagar, alleging that Mishra, along with his wife Preeti Mishra and their daughter Anshika Tiwari, cheated her late husband, Suresh Singh Bisht, of nearly Rs 19.8 lakh. The accused allegedly promised to secure an agency and licence for agricultural fertilisers, arrange jobs for children, and issue certificates. Bisht further claimed they demanded an additional Rs 7 lakh in Jan, threatening that failure to pay would result in forfeiture of the earlier sum. She said the financial and mental strain led her husband to suffer a brain haemorrhage on Jan 15, and he died a week later on Jan 22 at Delhi's Max Hospital. When she sought the return of the money, the accused allegedly abused her and issued death threats. With no action from local police or the SSP despite repeated complaints, she approached the high court. On Friday, while disposing of her petition in line with Arnesh Kumar guidelines, the court clarified that since the maximum punishment under the charges is seven years, issuing a notice before arrest is mandatory. Greek police seize over 270 kg cocaine worth over 5.5 million euros, 3 arrested
Thessaloniki (Greece), Aug 10 (AP) Greek police said on Sunday they seized over 270 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated value of over 5.5 million euros (USD 6.5 million) and arrested three men. The cocaine was hidden inside a container of bananas imported from Ecuador, they said. Police had been informed by the United Kingdom's National Crime Agency that the cocaine would be carried by a ship headed to the northern Greek port of Thessaloniki. Police officers found the cocaine and removed most of the drug contained in brick-sized packages from the container before it was loaded into a truck. They released a short video of the removal operation. The truck headed for the Athens suburb of Aspropyrgos, more that 500 kilometres to the south, where the police arrested three men as they opened the container on Saturday. The total amount of cocaine seized was 271.15 kilograms, police said. The arrested men include two Greeks, the 40-year-old owner of a haulage company, a 32-year-old and a 47-year-old Bulgarian citizen, police say, adding that the Bulgarian was in touch with a drug gang and organised the picking up and transport of the container. The 32-year-old was in charge of distributing the drug through unnamed gang members. Police are looking for more people they say belong to a drug distribution gang.
