AC suburban train ridership in Chennai doubles since April
CHENNAI: With a daily ridership of 1,488 in April this year to 2,800 in June, the Southern Railway's Chennai division has claimed the patronage for AC local trains has been steadily increasing since their introduction. The division also said all 9-car suburban trains in Chennai have now been upgraded to 12-car rakes.
Introduced in April this year, eight air-conditioned local train services are currently operating on the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu route. These services have witnessed a notable rise in ridership, especially during peak hours, at major stations such as Chennai Beach, Guindy, Tambaram, Mambalam, Perungalathur, Potheri, Guduvanchery, and Chengalpattu.
In a statement, the railway said fares for AC local are only marginally higher than those of non-AC first-class tickets. Additionally, the AC local fares are comparable to CMRL rates for distances between 12-15 km and match AC bus fares for travel between 26-40 km.
It also noted the ridership is expected to rise further with the upcoming Phase II extension of the St Thomas Mount-Velachery MRTS and its planned integration with CMRL. Meanwhile, the Chennai railway division has upgraded all 9-car local trains to 12-car on the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu, Chennai Central-Arakkonam, and Chennai Central-Gummidipundi/Sullurupeta routes.

Memorial For Pahalgam Victims: J&K Administration To Build ‘Symbol Of Resilience' In 6 Months
A spot close to the Pahalgam ambush site has been identified, and the structure's design is being envisioned as one that captures solemnity & strength To honour those who lost their lives and to reassure tourists, the Jammu & Kashmir administration, in consultation with the Centre, has finalised plans to construct a memorial near the site of the Pahalgam terror attack. A group of five armed militants linked to Pakistan's Lashkar e Taiba opened fire on tourists, killing 26 civilians. Attackers reportedly asked victims their religious identity, demanding recitation of the Islamic kalima to distinguish non Muslims. The ambush was carried out in Kashmir's tourism belt — an area that has otherwise witnessed a surge in footfall post-Article 370 abrogation. The planned memorial, officials say, will be constructed within six months and will serve not just as a tribute, but also as a national symbol of resilience. The last time I was in Pahalgam I cycled through a market that was all but deserted. Today I came back to a Pahalgam that was bustling with activity. Tourists from various parts of the country competed for space with local picnickers who were enjoying the cool climate & rainy… — Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) June 22, 2025 A spot close to the ambush site has already been identified, and the structure's design — currently under finalisation — is being envisioned as one that captures both solemnity and strength. The incident triggered a swift response from security forces under Operation Sindoor, a coordinated anti-terror mission launched by India against Pakistan from May 7-11. The name 'Sindoor' was chosen symbolically, as many victims were newlyweds or families on pilgrimage. The precision military operation involved the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy. Nine terror installations tied to Lashkar e Taiba, Jaish e Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen—four in Pakistan, five in Pakistan occupied Kashmir — were attacked. Officials say the memorial will ensure that the memories of those innocent tourists, including women and children, are never forgotten, and that their loss stands as a reminder of the high cost of peace. The structure will be a place of reflection, not just for the families of the victims, but also for visitors and locals alike. It will also mark the spot where terror attempted to shake the spirit of Kashmir — but failed. Rail users in Mangaluru seek swift action on long-pending demands
Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada District Railway Passengers' Committee has urged the Southern Railway's Palakkad Division and the Railway Board to expedite action on a series of service and infrastructure-related demands concerning Mangaluru Central Railway Station. Responding to the committee's representation, the Palakkad Division confirmed that Mangaluru Central already has operational facilities for the maintenance of modern LHB coaches. However, it cited infrastructural limitations in addressing the wide gap between platforms and tracks, noting that yard remodelling would be required for any permanent solution. The Committee also pushed for prioritising the recruitment of local staff conversant in Kannada and Tulu for IRCTC stalls at the station. While officials noted that such contracts are awarded through a centralised tendering process, they assured that contractors would be advised to give preference to local-language speakers where possible. Development works at both Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction are currently underway. The committee's request for establishing an IRCTC lounge at Mangaluru Central has been forwarded to relevant authorities. On the issue of upgrading key trains like the West Coast Express, Maveli Express, Malabar Express, and Mangaluru–Chennai Mail to LHB coaches, the division clarified that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Railway Board and would be presented for consideration. Given the intensity of the ongoing monsoon in coastal Karnataka, the committee emphasised the need to expedite the extension of platform shelters. Officials responded that shelter extensions would be undertaken based on necessity. Meanwhile, the proposed Mangaluru–Rameswaram train service has received Railway Board approval and is now awaiting final operational orders from the Southern Railway's headquarters. Another key proposal, the resumption of the Navajeevan Express via the Hassan–Miraj–Pune route, is still pending with the Railway Board. The Southern Railway has been urged to take this forward at the earliest. The request for additional coaches on the Mangaluru Central–Subrahmanya Road passenger train has been acknowledged and will be reviewed based on passenger footfall. Expressing thanks for the official responses, the committee reiterated its demand for time-bound action on these proposals, stressing their importance for enhancing passenger experience and safety in one of Karnataka's busiest coastal rail corridors.
