Black Country actor aims to inspire South Asian community

BBC News17-05-2025
A 19-year-old who landed his dream role in the TV series Man Like Mobeen says he is "proud" to help break down barriers for South Asian actors.Danyal Zafar, from the Black Country, plays the character Moped in the BBC comedy's fifth and final season. He did his audition on a Zoom call from his bedroom and said landing the part took him "one step closer to the dream I had when I was eight years old".Mr Zafar said he believed the success of programmes like Citizen Khan, Man Like Mobeen, Virdee and Ackley Bridge showed there was a growing appetite for South Asian television series.
He believes it is important for series like these to break down barriers."I'm from the Pakistani community, so acting is very looked down upon in my community of South Asian people," he said."It's a cultural hangover, where doctors and lawyers are seen to be proper jobs."
Man Like Mobeen, which was filmed in Birmingham and Coventry, has been described as a launch pad for young acting talent.Mr Zafar said he had been "chilling out" at home after finishing at his acting BTEC Halesowen College when he saw the invitation on Instagram to a casting call in Birmingham and thought to himself, "why not".He said his college course had prepared him well for auditions and added: "You're quite confident in yourself when you're doing them regularly."Appearing on set was a different matter though and he admitted to feeling a bit starstruck when he first met the star of Man Like Mobeen, Guz Khan."A few years back I was just watching the show with my friends," he said."It was just seeing someone you only see on screen in real life."
Mr Zafar has recently filmed a small part in the upcoming film I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning and said his preference would be to do more television and film work. But, he said: "If I just get to perform and I like the role and I like the script, I'll do it."He also said he hoped his story could encourage others from his community to take up acting."If I can inspire anyone to just follow what they want to do when they dream, honestly that would be the best feeling on earth," he said.

Christopher Biggins defends Gregg Wallace by making bizarre claim

Christopher Biggins, 76, has defended sacked MasterChef host Gregg Wallace by stating he used to "grab women by the t***ies," claiming it was considered "affection" 25 years ago. Biggins, who is gay, joked that such actions would now lead to imprisonment, suggesting that people are "terrified" and comedians face a tough job. Refuge ambassador and former Love Island star Sharon Gaffka criticised Biggins' comments, stating: 'Touching someone without their consent, regardless of the context, is never funny'. Gregg Wallace's position on MasterChef became "untenable" after an investigation upheld 45 of 83 allegations against him, including inappropriate sexual language and unwelcome physical contact. John Torode, Wallace's co-presenter, was also sacked after a complaint against him involving an "extremely offensive racist term" was upheld.

Horror as Boardmasters revellers are left dangling upside down after huge fairground ride breaks down during festival

TERRIFIED Boardmasters festival-goers were left dangling upside-down for 20 minutes after an amusement ride at the event broke down. The horrifying incident took place earlier this weekend, as thousands of Brits headed down to Cornwall for the festival. 3 The ride is designed to be a one-armed swing, with people sat at each end. When it is activated, festival-goers are thrown around in a circle. However, this time, the ride got stuck. One thrill-seeker filmed the breakdown on unfolding, captioning the video: "Apollo 13 broke, with people stuck at the top for 20 minutes." He had just missed out on getting onto the ride, as he was still in the queue when it broke down. After he shared the nailbiting footage on TikTok on Friday, it has been shared more than 500 times. Fans flooded the comment section, as they spoke about how scared they would have been if they were on the ride. One person commented: "No, imagine being stuck up there and it starts to move because of the wind…". Another said: "I saw this happen from my house and I thought the ride was shut." One even revealed that they were on the ride at the time, writing: "I was stuck up there." 'It was carnage!' slams mum over Boardmasters crowd surge that hospitalised 7 & saw 100s of kids in tears Boardmasters Festival has been approached for comment about the incident. Meanwhile, the festival had a huge line-up with incredible stars taking to the main stage. Noughties icon Nelly Furtado performed a slew of dance hits including Maneater and I'm Like a Bird. She appeared before Central Cee headlined the event but the singer-songwriter had gathered a huge crowd of her own. Over 50,000 Brits headed to the festival which takes place every year in Newquay. Ahead of the festival CrossCountry warned that roads leading to the area would be jammed. CrossCountry said: "Boardmasters Festival is located in Newquay, and you can get to Newquay station easily with CrossCountry. "The simplest way to get to Newquay using CrossCountry services is to change at Plymouth station. "From Newquay station, shuttles run to the festival every fifteen minutes on Wednesday, August 6. "Using the CrossCountry network, we expect Plymouth station to be the busiest connecting station. "We expect festival attendees to be travelling through Plymouth on Wednesday, August 6, and Thursday, August 7, and again on Monday, August 11, when passengers are travelling home. "If you are travelling around Plymouth on these days, services may be slightly busier than usual." 3
