Thousands of tourists flock to Jab Valley
Located approximately 80 kilometres from Islamabad and 170 kilometres from Peshawar, Jab Valley has quietly evolved into a nature lover's haven, home to a chain of eight waterfalls that cascade in succession through forested cliffs. The valley lies just a short drive from Khanpur Dam, making it a convenient addition to traditional tourist itineraries.
The waterfalls, some plunging from heights of up to 200 metres, were first discovered and documented in 2021 by Hassan Nisar, a YouTuber and founder of Metrix Pakistan. His efforts not only brought the natural beauty of Jab Valley to the forefront but also helped promote the region nationally and internationally through digital media. The viral videos and widespread coverage that followed played a central role in establishing Jab Valley as a new hub for eco-tourism.
"I still remember hiking into the valley for the first time and hearing the roar of the waterfalls echoing through the cliffs. I knew instantly that the world needed to see this," said Nisar, smiling as he watched families pose for photos near the cascading waters. "Today, seeing so many people here appreciating the natural beauty of this place fills me with pride. This is exactly what I dreamed of - tourism that uplifts communities and brings people closer to nature."
He added that Jab Valley now needs targeted government investment and infrastructure development. "With official support, this place can become a signature site of Pakistan's tourism in the new era - a model for sustainable, community-led and eco-friendly travel."
"I came here with my friends from Lahore after seeing a video online. It's nothing like Murree or the usual tourist spots. It's peaceful and untouched," said Areeba Malik, a visitor from Punjab.
Jab Valley's charm lies in its resistance to commercial trappings. With no mega resorts, plastic waste or urban noise, it offers a rare sensory retreat: the gushing of the waterfalls, the call of native birds and the whisper of the wind through towering pine trees and centuries-old wild olive groves, known locally as zaitoon.
The ecological diversity of the region is remarkable. Migratory birds, porcupines, and foxes roam freely, while local flora includes medicinal plants long used by villagers for traditional healing. The valley's discovery has not only enriched Pakistan's natural tourism map. It has also revived the local economy.
Shoukat, a roadside daba owner in the area, credits the influx of tourists for a threefold increase in his daily earnings since 2021. "Before, I used to make around Rs400 a day. Now during peak season or Eid, I can earn up to Rs1,200. That's a big difference for someone like me," he said, flashing a grateful smile.
Despite the growing footfall, infrastructure remains minimal. Access roads are unpaved in sections, and there are no formal visitor facilities beyond a few local tea stalls and makeshift seating areas. While this lack of development adds to the valley's rustic appeal, it also raises questions about sustainability.
Environmentalists caution that without regulated tourism, the fragile ecosystem could suffer. "We need eco-conscious tourism, guided hikes, proper waste disposal and limited human interference," said an environmental science student from Hazara University visiting the site.
For now, Jab Valley remains a rare window into what tourism in Pakistan could be: rooted in nature, sustained by communities and appreciated with reverence.

The revamp includes two separate lounges, including a free family lounge and a Commercially Important Person (CIP) lounge, where travellers can relax in plush seating, sip tea, access free Wi-Fi and even catch up on work using computerised workstations, all for Rs300. The upgraded CIP lounge left many first-time visitors stunned, some mistaking it for a private office or upscale hotel. "I thought I had walked into someone's personal suite," one of the passengers said. "When the staff said it is for train travellers and costs just Rs300, I was in disbelief." The space features vibrant carpets, comfortable sofas and private cabins with reclining chairs. The refreshment area serves branded snacks and beverages at affordable rates, adding to the surprise for many passengers who expected higher costs. The upgrade comes following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's inauguration of the facility two days ago, marking the first major overhaul of Lahore station in more than 125 years. It also includes the installation of electric escalators and a major boost in cleanliness, ambience and overall service quality. Travellers like Adeel Zubair and Ikram, en route to Karachi, described the lounge as "unbelievable". "We thought it must cost more than Rs1,000," they said. "To find out it's just Rs300, with AC and refreshments, was honestly shocking. We kept asking, 'Are you sure it's only Rs300?'" The business-focused design has especially appealed to corporate travellers, who now have access to digital kiosks and workstations during their wait times. Railway officials said the latest developments were the first step in an ambitious nationwide overhaul. The broader plan includes the modernisation of key stations in Karachi, Multan, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad. As part of efforts to boost punctuality and enhance passenger experience, 11 trains have already been outsourced. However, they continue to operate under the ministry's supervision. Serving over 40 million passengers annually, the railways ministry now aims to elevate station infrastructure to meet global standards.

Hajj to cost a pilgrim in range of Rs1,150,000 to Rs1,250,000: govt
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Religious Affairs projected that the next year's Hajj will cost a pilgrim in the range of Rs1,150,000 to Rs1,250,000. This was stated by Ministry of Religious Affairs Secretary Dr Syed Ataur Rehman, while chairing the meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs. The committee was informed that the 64,000 pilgrims who were supposed to perform Hajj through private tour operators but unable to perform Hajj because of delay and lack of coordination between the Ministry and Saudi Government, dot not have to pay additional amount to perform Hajj. Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Mohammed Yousaf said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif already told the ministry to give priority to those pilgrims who were unable to perform Hajj because of change in policy by the Saudi Government which the ministry was unable to implement on time. On this issue, Senator Aon Abbas presented the report of the sub-committee on the findings and reasons which deprived large number of pilgrims managed by private tour operators from performing the Hajj. He said in the past, 902 tour operators used to provide services to pilgrims but this year the Saudi Government reduced their number to 42. He said those 42 tour operators did not have the capacity to manage such a huge number of pilgrims. He said the restriction of State Bank to provide foreign exchange only up to $0.3 million to tour operators also caused lot of problems for them. Apart from this, the attitude of the Ministry of Religious Affairs was not cooperative towards the tour operators, he added. He said the DG Hajj because of unprecedented powers was not answerable to anyone. Senator Aon Abbas, in his recommendations, said that the committee should directed the ministry that from now on, the DG Hajj should be appointed on merit and he must be familiar with Saudi culture and must know Arabic. He said the committee and the ministry should also urge the State Bank to increase the buying limit of dollars for the tour operators from $0.3 million to $1 million. Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas said that the government should have taken Shia and other Ulemas on board before barring pilgrims from travelling to Iraq and Iran by road for this year's Arbaeen pilgrimage due to regional security concerns. He said thousands of Zaireen had already deposited billions of rupees to tour operators for the pilgrimage to holy places in Iran and Iraq. He said the air fare for Iran and Iraq is very high which the majority of pilgrims cannot afford. Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Mohammed Yousaf said that the Interior Ministry made this decision after consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Balochistan Government, and key security agencies. He said that the restriction is based on safety and national security concerns linked to threats along the land routes. He said despite the ban on road travel, the government will facilitate pilgrims through air travel. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to arrange as many flights as possible to accommodate Zaireen in the coming days. Punjab allocates Rs4b to boost South Punjab tourism
In a move to boost tourism in South Punjab, the provincial government has announced an investment of up to Rs4 billion under the fiscal year 2025-26 budget. The initiative includes seven new development projects focused on enhancing tourism infrastructure, preserving natural and historical sites, and promoting adventure sports in the region. Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) South Punjab Fuad Hashim Rabbani shared the details of the planned investments on Friday, stating that the government aims to transform the region into a vibrant tourism hub by developing key sites and introducing advanced technology in major events. As part of the initiative, a recreational park and tourist resort will be developed at the scenic hill station of Fort Munro at an estimated cost of Rs400 million. Additionally, another recreational park will be established along the Indus River at Ghazi Ghat in Dera Ghazi Khan, with an allocation of Rs800 million. These facilities aim to provide quality leisure spaces for tourists and locals alike. One of the most ambitious undertakings in the new plan is the launch of an international-standard eco-tourism project at Lal Suhanra National Park in Bahawalpur. With a dedicated budget of Rs2 billion, this flagship project will focus on sustainable tourism practices while preserving the park's unique ecosystem. According to ACS Rabbani, this effort is designed to place South Punjab on the map as an ecotourism destination of global repute. In addition to new developments, several existing tourist sites will see upgrades. These include the historic Derawar Fort in the Cholistan desert, the spiritual town of Kot Mithan, and Choubara Tehsil. New tourist resorts are also planned for Mari, a lesser-known but scenic hill station in district Rajanpur, and further facilities will be added in Ghazi Ghat. Recognising the growing popularity of car sport events, especially the annual Cholistan Jeep Rally in Bahawalpur and the Thal Jeep Rally in the Thal desert, the government has allocated Rs250 million to enhance the management and international appeal of these rallies. Funds will be used to procure modern time management systems and GPS-based live tracking devices, bringing these high-octane events in line with global standards. ACS Fuad Hashim Rabbani emphasised that the timely execution of these projects will not only unlock the immense tourism potential of South Punjab but also generate employment, stimulate economic growth, and create new livelihood opportunities for local communities. "These targeted investments reflect our commitment to regional development through sustainable tourism," he said, expressing optimism that the initiatives will significantly uplift the profile of South Punjab as a premier tourist destination in Pakistan.
