Suspect in fatal knife attack at German festival admits killings as trial starts

BERLIN — The suspect in a knife attack at a festival in the German city of Solingen went on trial Tuesday on murder and terrorism charges, and acknowledged his guilt as the proceedings opened.
Three people were killed in the Aug. 23 attack at a 'Festival of Diversity' marking the 650th anniversary of the city in western Germany. The Syrian man, who has been identified only as Issa Al H. in line with German privacy rules, was arrested a day after the attack.
He is charged with three counts of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder and membership in a foreign terrorist organization, the Islamic State group, in the trial at the state court in Duesseldorf.
There are no formal pleas in the German legal system. However, the suspect admitted responsibility for the attack in a statement read by his lawyers, German news agency dpa reported.
'I have brought severe guilt upon myself. I am prepared to accept the verdict,' he said. 'I killed innocent people, not infidels.'
The Solingen incident was one of several deadly attacks in the months leading up to Germany's national election in February that involved immigrant suspects, pushing migration to the forefront of the political agenda in that vote.
It highlighted problems with returning rejected asylum-seekers to the first country where they entered the European Union, as is supposed to happen under EU rules. The suspect was supposed to be deported to Bulgaria in 2023 but reportedly disappeared for a time and avoided expulsion.
Murder charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison in Germany.
The Duesseldorf court has scheduled trial sessions until late September.

Man charged in Ottawa woman's murder had a history of intimate partner violence cases
Social Sharing The man charged with the first-degree murder of a missing Ottawa woman has a history of intimate partner violence cases, court records show. Joshua Blair, 35, is accused of murdering 54-year-old Rachelle Desrochers on or about March 16, as well as committing an indignity to her body by throwing it in a dumpster. Blair was initially charged with second-degree murder. Earlier this week, an upgraded charge of first-degree murder was filed in court. Desrochers was last seen alive on Elgin Street on March 14, two days before her alleged murder, according to a missing person announcement issued by Ottawa police in April. On Sunday, police announced her alleged murder and the search for her remains at a local landfill. Search efforts took place last weekend and earlier this week. Her remains have not been found. According to court records, Blair was charged in June 2023 with mischief under $5,000 for damaging a patio table, chairs and a television belonging to another woman with whom he was in a relationship. CBC is not naming the woman because she is a victim of intimate partner violence, and CBC has been unable to reach her. The court ordered Blair not to communicate with or go near the woman, nor three other people who shared her last name. When Blair failed to show up at the Ottawa Courthouse to be fingerprinted and photographed that same month, he was charged with failing to comply with an undertaking. On July 12, 2023, Blair returned to the woman's house where he kicked open her front door and entered. He was subsequently arrested and charged with failing to comply with an undertaking not to communicate with the woman or her relatives, being within 250 metres of her home, and breaking and entering. On Oct. 23, 2023, Blair pleaded guilty to the original mischief charge, as well as being unlawfully in a dwelling. The other charges were withdrawn at the request of the Crown. Blair 'embarrassed,' lawyer told court At his sentencing, Blair's then lawyer Carey MacLellan said his client was remorseful for his actions toward his former partner. "Joshua has, from moment one, encouraged me to resolve these matters so he could take responsibility for himself. He seems to be embarrassed. His emotions got the best of him," MacLellan said at the time. On the recommendation of both the defence and Crown, Ontario Court Justice Robert Wadden handed down a 90-day conditional sentence (house arrest) and one year of probation. Blair was again ordered to stay away from and not communicate with the woman and three other individuals sharing her last name. He was also ordered to attend and actively participate in a partner assault response program. In July 2024, Blair was charged with violating his probation by failing to report to his probation officer. He pleaded guilty in February 2025 and received a suspended sentence and another year of probation. The next month, on or about March 16, police allege he murdered Desrochers and disposed of her body in a dumpster. The allegations have not been proven. In April, Blair was charged with breaching his 2023 probation order for failing to attend domestic violence counselling between mid-October 2024 and mid-January 2025. That case remains before the court. Arrested twice in 11 days On May 13, Blair was arrested and accused of unlawfully entering the house he agreed to stay away from, punching and kicking holes in the drywall, and violating his probation by failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. He was released later that same day after posting a $1,000 bond under conditions to stay away from the home he had unlawfully entered, and not to possess tools for breaking into buildings or vehicles. Eleven days later he was again arrested and charged with breaching probation by failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. That charge was withdrawn at the request of the Crown that same day. Also that day, Blair was charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a dead body. He remains in custody and is next set to appear in court on Friday. Police have labelled Desrochers's killing a femicide. CBC has not been able to confirm how Blair and Desrochers knew each other.

The victim, who was described by neighbours as a friendly, retired kindergarten teacher in her 80s, was rushed to a Toronto-area trauma centre where she died of her injuries a short time later. A 14-year-old boy was arrested a few hours later following a city-wide manhunt and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the brazen incident. Durham police have said that the fatal stabbing appears to have been an unprovoked 'random attack' and that there is nothing at this point to suggest that the victim knew her attacker. Investigators are still working to determine a motive for this incident and won't say if a weapon was recovered. Investigation May 29 Pickering murder An investigation is now underway following a May 29 murder in Pickering. In the footage captured by a nearby surveillance camera, an individual, whose face has been obscured, is observed passing by a house a few blocks up from the murder scene on Lynn Heights Drive about 10 minutes before the incident, which occurred just after 3 p.m. He is seen wearing black gloves, a long, dark, trench coat, and carrying what appears to be a soft-structured briefcase. At 3:02 p.m., the same individual re-appears on camera returning from where he came from. He's seen stopping and fiddling around with his briefcase, before continuing past the house again. CTV News Toronto has spoken to the person whose cameras captured the video. He declined to speak on camera, but confirmed the videos were taken yesterday at around the time of the incident. Another viewer video, also obtained by CTV News Toronto, shows Durham police a few hours later in the backyard of a home that is about an hour away from the crime scene on foot. 'We saw the helicopters and all police, some action from last night,' he said. The man's home backs onto the house in question. He described a 14-year-old boy who lived there. 'He was always wearing dark clothing, nothing really out of the ordinary,' he said, calling the murder 'shocking.' Earlier on Friday, one neighbour told CP24 that she also spotted a strange person walking in the area who was wearing black gloves and a trench coat. 'He stood out,' Shedia Serrao-Fredericks said. 'It is not normal at 2:30 or whatever time it was in the afternoon to be dressed like that.' Prior to the arrest, police said the suspect was seen wearing a surgical mask, a long, black jacket and was carrying a black bag. Investigation May 29 murder Pickering An investigation is underway following a May 29 murder in Pickering. Several neighbours said they saw police in the area last night, but did not go outside to see what was going on as they were told to shelter in place. Today, people in the community are reeling from what has happened, saying that the accused has lived nearby for a number of years. One woman said she saw the teen just a few days before the murder coming out of his house. 'I think he was wearing a tuxedo and I just saw him walking down this street. … I thought he was going to a job interview or something, but he looked a bit too young,' she said. Meanwhile, rumours are swirling at a nearby school that the accused may have been a student there. 'I've heard that this kid was from this school,' one parent told CTV News Toronto. 'I was expecting the school to provide me with some information.' Accused due back in court on June 20 CTV News Toronto was in court this morning when the teen appeared via video. Few details can be released about the case due to a publication ban, except to say that the accused was wearing a dark sweater and that his right hand appeared to be bandaged in white gauze. When spoken to, he replied in a soft voice and looked downcast. There were no family members present in the court room. The accused is scheduled to be back in court on June. 20. This investigation is ongoing and anyone with further information, include video from the area, is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
