Bing Crosby Stakes Sings At Del Mar On July 26
Back in 1937, Bing Crosby opened a piece of heaven on earth down at old Del Mar. No one is quite sure if this crooning superstar realized he was creating a haven for the sport of Thoroughbred racing, but he likely had a pretty good idea this seaside oval would flourish. In fitting fashion, one of the top races of the summer meet is named in his honor. Garnering grade 1 status and offering a Breeders' Cup Sprint berth to the winner, this six-furlong dash over the Del Mar dirt has long provided season highlights and this year's edition looks to be more of the same. The 2025 Bing Crosby offers up a talented nine horse field that will have somebody singing at the end. Let's take a look at the entrants and provide a thought on each. Runners are listed by post position with trainer, jockey, and morning line.
1 Crazy Mason (Greg Sacco, Christopher Elliot 6-1 ) -Shipping from the East Coast, this son of Coal Front has won three of four starts this year. Two starts back he won the Carter Stakes at Aqueduct. Would it be Crazy to think he could ship and win??? His closing style could have him there at the end considering the front-end speed in the race.
2 Dr. Venkman (Mark Glatt, Antonio Fresu 4-1 )-This son of Ghostzapper has three wins and four seconds in eight lifetime starts. He has been the bridesmaid in both stats this year, but we think he is the one here. A stalking trip might just provide that trip to the circle.
3 Hejazi (Bob Baffert, Juan Hernandez 7-2 )- Nobody has won more Stakes races at Del Mar than Bob Baffert. He is not likely to add to that total here, but this New York-bred son of Bernardini can impact the race by contesting the early pace. Hejazi has two career wins, but has been in the money in eight of ten lifetime starts.
4 Smooth Crusein (Karen Headley, Kyle Frey 20-1 )- This three-year-old Florida-bred will be stepping up in class here. He ran against older horses in his last start and finished third in a four horse field at Santa Anita. This is a big ask for this son of Girvin and he can only hope for a Smooth trip.
5 World Record (Rodolphe Brisset, Flavien Prat 3-1 )- The speed of the speed in this one. Insanely fast early, his last two wins saw him on the lead with opening quarter miles that were 21 and change. If they leave this son of Gun Runner alone on the lead it will be over early.

6 Roll on Big Joe (Robert Hess, Julien Leparoux 6-1 )- Grandson of Victory Gallop has four wins in five starts this year and was quite impressive in winning the grade 3 Kelly's Landing at Churchill Downs in his last start. In the money in fourteen of eighteen lifetime starts but has only managed one second in three starts at Del Mar.
7 Mbagnick (John Sadler, Armando Ayuso 5-1 )- After we figure out how to say this Chilean-bred's name we will decide if he has a real shot. John Sadler has saddled many winners at Del Mar, and this son of Practical Joke took'em gate to wire in winning his last start at this same distance on June 13.
8 Spirit of Makena (George Papapodromo, Abel Cedillo 20-1 )-This son of Ghostzapper won four of his first five career starts including two stakes victories. Injury sidelined him all of 2024 and he has a third-place finish in two starts this year but is winless since May of 2023. Coming back off such a layoff takes a lot of Spirit. The Bing and this field is a big asking.
9 Lovesick Blues (Librado Baracio, Geovani Franco 20-1 )-This California-bred is the veteran of the group with forty lifetime starts. Always a hard-knocker, this son of Grazen has been in the top three twenty-six times with eight wins. Although not likely to win, he is a horse that can be there at the end and pump up the exotic payouts.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame added five members with the 2025 class inducted in the 53rd annual ceremony at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown, New York, on Sunday. Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner were welcomed into baseball immortality. They were joined Dick Allen and Dave Parker, who were voted in by the Classic Baseball Era committee. But he led off Sunday's festivities with his speech. "What a humbling moment standing in front of my heroes on the ultimate stage," Wagner said to begin his speech. Setting a fun tone for the day, Wagner thanked several of his teammates including Moises Alou for teaching him to appreciate Dominican culture "even though I can't speak a lick of Spanish" and Jeff Bagwell for the "glare" that often set the tone in the Houston Astros' clubhouse. Dave Parker's son, David Parker II, spoke on behalf of his late father, who died just a month before the Hall of Fame induction ceremony. He read a poem that his father wanted to read for this moment. Reading from the speech his father wrote, he thanks the players who called his father "Pops," including former Reds teammates Eric Davis and Barry Larkin. He thanked Dave Winfield for asking him to play for the Blue Jays and pursue another World Series. And he expressed admiration to Tony La Russa, who said he didn't just want Parker's numbers, he wanted him to provided leadership for the team's younger players how to play baseball. David Parker recalled seeing how famous his father was when they went out in public and were approached by so many fans. Dave Parker clarified for his son, "They ain't fans, son. They're friends.' The other player elected by the Classic Baseball Era committee also unfortunately earned the honor posthumously. Dick Allen was represented by his wife, Willa. She became emotional while recalling how much her husband wanted to speak to the Phillies fans when the team retired his No. 15 in 2020, despite being sick with cancer. He had difficulties with the fans early in his career, but came to love them. "Thank you for finally bringing him home," Willa Allen said to baseball fans and those who elected him to Cooperstown. CC Sabathia began his acceptance speech by thanking his fellow Hall of Famers including former Yankees teammate Derek Jeter, who graciously praised the pitcher in a video shown beforehand. He also thanked fellow inductee Ichiro Suzuki, "who stole my Rookie of the Year trophy" in 2001. Sabathia also expressed gratitude for becoming a Hall of Famer in the same class as Parker, who was the DH on the 1989 Oakland Athletics team he loved while growing up as a baseball fan. He also referenced Ken Griffey Jr., who was his mother's favorite player and shared the stage with him in Cooperstown on Sunday. He also expressed regret for not being able to win a World Series for the fans in Cleveland. Finally, Ichiro Suzuki practically put on a stand-up comedy routine with his speech. Notably, he made the speech in English after conducting most interviews during his career, and interviews leading up to the Hall of Fame ceremony, in his native Japanese. "For the third time, I am a rookie," he said, referencing joining the Orix Blue Wave and Seattle Mariners as a first-timer before entering the Baseball Hall of Fame. 'I am 51 years old, so easy on the hazing," he said, turning to the 52 Hall of Famers on stage behind him. Suzuki also made a point to mention the one Baseball Writers Association of America voter who did not give him a first-place vote, preventing him from being the second-ever unanimous selection. "The offer for that writer to have dinner at my home has now expired," he said for the day's biggest laugh. Suzuki also thanked former Marlins president David Samson and president of baseball operations Mike Hill for signing him to play three seasons in Miami from 2015-17. "When you guys called to offer me a contract in 2015," he jokingly admitted, "honestly… I had never heard of your team." The frequent humor provided the perfect note for a day made longer by a one-hour rain delay and hot temperatures in Cooperstown that compelled Parker II to take off his jacket during his speech and Sabathia to frequently wipe his bald head with a towel. Yet no one will likely remember those inconveniences, but instead recall some funny, touching speeches and an outstanding Hall of Fame class for 2025. Breanna Stewart reportedly avoided significant leg injury, will travel with Liberty on upcoming road trip
There appears to be reason for relief in New York. Liberty All-Star Breanna Stewart reportedly avoided a significant lower-leg injury after leaving early during Saturday's loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. That's according to Madeline Kenney of the New York Post, who reported Sunday that imaging revealed the absence of a significant injury. The nature of Stewart's injury is unclear from the report. But the news is certainly welcome in New York as the Liberty seek to repeat as WNBA champions. Per the report, Stewart will travel with the team for New York's upcoming four-game road trip that features a potential WNBA Finals preview against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx. Stewart's status for that matchup on Wednesday is far from certain. Per Kenney, the Liberty plan "to give her time to fully recover." She did not return to the game and was eventually ruled out at halftime. Liberty coach Sandy Brondello told reporters after the game that there was no update on Stewart's status. "Hopefully she'll be OK," Brondello said in her postgame news conference. Saturday's 101-99 loss to the Sparks on Saturday was the Liberty's first in six games to drop them to 17-7. They remain comfortably in first place in the Eastern Conference, three games ahead of the second-place Atlanta Dream (14-10). The Lynx maintain the best record in the WNBA (22-4), four games ahead of the Liberty in the race for home-court advantage in a potential Finals matchup. Yankees place Aaron Judge on 10-day IL as slugger avoids worst
The New York Yankees placed Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list on Sunday with a right flexor strain as fears were calmed over speculation that the injury could have been more serious. An MRI showed that Judge did not have any acute damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, which would have likely required Tommy John surgery and an extended stay on the IL. He missed just his second game of the season as the team lost to the Philadelphia Phillies. He had a platelet-rich plasma injection, and he could return to action anywhere from 10 to 14 days. I just didn't want to put our pitchers in jeopardy, just not be able to come up and make a play for them," he said. The roster decision was retroactive to Saturday, and the Yankees traded for Amed Rosario, who the team acquired in a deal with the Washington Nationals, to take his spot. Judge was putting together another MVP-like season. He won the American League MVP last season and in 2022. This year, Judge is leading the majors in batting average (.342), on-base percentage (.449), slugging percentage (.711), OPS (1.160) and hits (129). He has 37 home runs and 85 RBI. The Yankees could use him back soon. The team is 56-48 and in second place in the American League East.
