Coimbatore folk lose Rs24 crore to cyber fraudsters till May 15

Coimbatore: Awareness campaigns by police to sensitize the public about cybercrimes do not seem to have yielded desirable results, with an increasing number of city residents falling prey to cyber fraudsters every other day.
As per the data available with the city cybercrime police, city folk have lost Rs23.91 crore to online scamsters from January 2025 to May 15.
A Saravana Sundar, city police commissioner, said the people who wanted to invest their money in online trading were being lured by cyber fraudsters, who send them links through Telegram, Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp, asking them to download fake online trading apps. "People should not trust such apps and strangers who approach them with promises of huge profits in online trading."
He said the people should not invest in any third-party online trading mobile applications. "Educated people are falling into the traps laid by online fraudsters. They should be very cautious."
Another police officer said P Ramesh, 46, a dentist from Coimbatore, had lost Rs52 lakh to cyber fraudsters very recently. "He was looking for online share market details on a website and clicked a link. A stranger contacted him over phone and asked him to download a mobile application.
The dentist downloaded the app and invested Rs52 lakh from March 17 to April 14. The digital wallet of the mobile application displayed Rs2 crore in his account.
The dentist attempted to withdraw the amount, but in vain. He realized that he was cheated and lodged a complaint with us."
P Arun, inspector, city cybercrime police station, said the cyber fraudsters were involved in FedEx scam last year. "They threatened people by posing as police officers and cheated crores of rupees from the city residents.
The FedEx scam was drastically reduced following repeated awareness campaigns by the govt and police department. Now, the fake online trading app scam is trending in the city. City folk have lost Rs23.91 crore to cyber fraudsters from January to May 15 this year.
Of this, around 80% of the amount was lost in the fake online trading app scam."
The city police commissioner said they had been creating awareness among the people from all walks of life to prevent them from becoming victims of cybercrime cases.

This fake cardiologist performed 50-plus heart surgeries at Faridabad hospital in 7 months

Faridabad: An MBBS doctor masquerading as a cardiologist performed more than 50 heart procedures over seven months before his fraudulent practice was discovered. Though a qualified doctor, Pankaj Mohan Sharma put countless lives at risk at a heartcare centre in Badshah Khan civil hospital because he was not authorised to perform critical cardiac surgeries. Dr Sharma came under cops' scanner when Sanjay Gupta — a lawyer and social activist — lodged a complaint at NIT Faridabad police station on April 11, quoting sources to allege he bagged additional degrees based on forged documents. Preliminary probe revealed that the accused had been operating under a stolen identity, misappropriating national medical commission's registration number assigned to Dr Pankaj Mohan, a legitimate cardiologist practising in the city. Police said Dr Sharma was hired in July last year by Mediterina Hospital, which runs the heartcare centre at Badshah Khan on a public-private partnership mode. "The hospital management continued to employ an unqualified and fraudulent doctor who lacks any degree or recognised specialisation in cardiology. Dr Sharma falsely claimed qualifications of MD and DNB (cardiology), which are entirely fraudulent," said lawyer Gupta. After coming to know about the fraud, Dr Mohan lodged a complaint with IMA in Jan this year, alleging illegal use of his credentials by the other doctor. He also slapped a legal notice on Dr Sharma. What raised eyebrows was that Dr Sharma suddenly stopped attending the centre in Feb after being asked to produce his medical degree. "Many patients began enquiring about him and eventually visited the real Dr Pankaj Mohan. When Dr Mohan clarified that he had never worked at the heart centre, the allegations strengthened," said a doctor at Badshah Khan. Adding another layer to the deception, Dr Sharma maintained a Facebook profile under the name 'Kshitiz Mohan' and was listed as the director of a film production firm, raising more questions on his medical credentials. Dr M Pratap Kumar, CMD of Mediterina Hospital who also heads the heart centre at Badshah Khan, confirmed that Dr Sharma had been removed. "He applied through formal HR channels as a general physician. We always had suspicion about his DM (cardiology) degree and acted on it," he said. "We have sought details related to the doctor from the CMO. We want to know how he was recruited as he served in the civil hospital for months. We are, however, yet to get any record. Only after we have all the details, we will initiate legal action," said Yashpal, a spokesperson for police. Lured with cryptocurrency bait, CA duped of 1.93crore

Lucknow: Cyber fraudsters have conned a chartered accountant (CA) of Rs 1.93 crore by luring him into a cryptocurrency investment scheme. The victim, Shalabh Pandey, a resident of Vijayant Khand, Gomtinagar, told the police that the scam began with a Facebook friendship request from a woman named Bhavika Shetty. SHO Cyber Crime Police Station Brijesh Yadav confirmed that an FIR was registered under section 318 (4), 319(2), and 66D of the IT Act while investigations are underway, including collecting details of the bank accounts involved. According to the FIR filed at the Cyber Crime Police Station, the accused woman claimed she was planning to open a school and an old-age home in Kolkata and initially sought financial and tax consultancy from Pandey. "Over time, the conversation shifted to cryptocurrency investments, and Bhavika portrayed herself as an expert in the field, promising high returns," said the complainant in the FIR. "Influenced by her claims, the CA first invested Rs 50,000 via a WhatsApp-based portal named X-MEX. Soon, the online portfolio linked to the portal began showing profits and bonuses, building trust in the scheme. Encouraged by the gains, he transferred a total of Rs 1.92 crore over multiple transactions to 11 different bank accounts," said the SHO. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Trouble began when Pandey tried to withdraw the alleged profits.
