Gold Trims Losses Locally ,Globally Amid Escalating Economic Uncertainty

Waleed Farouk
Gold prices trimmed their losses in the local market during trading on Thursday, supported by rising global ounce prices, amid escalating economic uncertainty gripping international markets.
The price of gold in the local market rose to EGP 4,610 per gram, after falling this morning to EGP 4,585, affected by a previous drop in global prices. In global markets, the ounce managed to recover a significant portion of its losses, rising to $3,300 after previously falling to $3,245, amid ongoing economic turmoil that is pushing investors toward gold as a safe haven.
The price of 24-karat gold reached EGP 5,269 per gram, while the price of 18-karat gold reached EGP 3,951 per gram. The price of 14-karat gold reached approximately EGP 3,074 per gram, and the price of the gold pound reached approximately EGP 36,880 per gram. Gold prices in local markets fell by EGP 5 during trading on Wednesday. The price of a gram of 21-karat gold opened at EGP 4,620 and closed at EGP 4,615. Meanwhile, an ounce fell by $27, opening at $3,305 and closing at $3,287.
Gold prices witnessed a significant recovery during trading on Thursday, after paring most of their previous losses, supported by the decline of the US dollar and growing uncertainty about the future of the global economy amid escalating tensions related to US tariff policies.
This recovery was attributed to a federal court ruling in New York halting the implementation of US President Donald Trump's tariff policy, believing that the decision contributed to undermining the strength of the dollar, thus supporting demand for gold as a safe haven. The court ruled that the Trump administration exceeded its constitutional powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) when imposing tariffs on several trading partners and ordered the tariffs to be rescinded within ten days, prompting the White House to file an urgent appeal.
These developments come at a time of growing concern within economic circles about the impact of tariffs on global growth, amid warnings of an impending recession. Analysts at Invesco warned that the confusion caused by trade policy uncertainty could push US companies to freeze investment plans and postpone hiring decisions and wage increases, which could negatively impact corporate profits and domestic consumption.
Meanwhile, the minutes of the US Federal Reserve's May 6-7 meeting revealed that bank officials face increasing challenges, most notably persistent inflationary pressures and a declining labor market, forcing policymakers to make difficult decisions in the coming period. The minutes indicated that inflation may persist longer than expected, coinciding with declining growth and employment prospects, amid the impact of new tariff policies.
Although the Federal Reserve decided at its last meeting to hold interest rates within a range of 4.25% to 4.5%, Chairman Jerome Powell stressed the need to be cautious in taking further steps until the full economic impact of recent government policies becomes clear.
Investors are awaiting tomorrow's release of the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index for April, the Fed's preferred measure of inflation. Expectations indicate a moderate annual growth rate of 2.5%, compared to 2.6% in March, but the impact of the data may be limited amid escalating economic and political tensions.
In this volatile context, gold remains the biggest gainer so far, driven by its status as a safe-haven asset and the continued uncertainty in global markets.

Silver Stabilizes In The Local Market, Declines Globally Amid Escalating Monetary Policy Pressures

Waleed Farouk Silver prices in local markets witnessed a state of stability during trading on Saturday, while the ounce declined on the global stock exchange amid continued uncertainty regarding the direction of US monetary policy and expectations of slowing growth in a number of major economies. Silver prices in local markets witnessed a state of stability, with the price of 800-karat silver reaching EGP 47.25 per gram, while the ounce declined on the global stock exchange by approximately $0.49 during the week's trading to $32.96. The price of 999-karat silver reached EGP 59 per gram, and the price of 925-karat silver reached EGP 54.50 per gram, while the silver pound (925-karat) reached EGP 436 per gram. Silver prices in the Egyptian market are affected by global factors and the exchange rate of the Egyptian pound against the dollar. With global prices stable, the local market is expected to witness relative stability, with the possibility of minor fluctuations based on changes in the local exchange rate. Data shows that silver maintained relative stability during May, with limited fluctuations within a range of approximately $1.50. Since the beginning of the year, silver prices have risen 15.58%, driven by increased industrial demand, particularly in the clean energy and technology sectors, as well as its role as a safe haven amid geopolitical tensions. Silver prices on the global exchange during the last week of May 2025 witnessed a clear fluctuation between limited gains and selling pressure, amid continued uncertainty regarding the direction of US monetary policy and expectations of slowing growth in several major economies. The ounce recorded slight gains at the beginning of the week, supported by declining US Treasury yields and a weaker dollar. However, these gains soon faced strong resistance with the release of economic data that reinforced expectations of higher interest rates for a longer period. Statements by some Federal Reserve officials revealed that the bank is in no hurry to cut interest rates, reducing the appeal of non-yielding precious metals, most notably silver. He added that silver, unlike gold, is widely used in industries, especially solar energy and electronics. With the slowdown in industrial activity in China and Europe, investor appetite for the white metal has declined. Silver typically moves in tandem with gold, and with gold trading near $3,300 per ounce, silver remains partially supported, albeit at a slower pace due to the market's sensitivity to any decline in industrial demand. Analysts believe that silver prices may remain confined to a range between $30.50 and $33.00 in the short term, unless there are further signs of a shift in monetary policy or a significant improvement in global manufacturing indicators. Silver is expected to reach $37.04 per ounce by the end of 2025, representing a 26% increase compared to the previous year. Silver remains a dual metal—both investment and industrial—which makes it more susceptible to volatility than gold. In an uncertain economic environment, experts advise investors to exercise caution and carefully monitor economic developments before making buying or selling decisions. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Gold Swings Between Dollar Pressure ,Trump's Surprises

Waleed Farouk Gold prices fell slightly in local markets during trading on Saturday, coinciding with the global stock market's weekly holiday. The ounce ended the week with a 2% decline, amid a combination of mixed economic data and the political controversy surrounding tariffs in the United States. Gold prices fell in local markets by about 15 Egyptian pounds during trading today, compared to yesterday's close. The price of a gram of 21-karat gold reached 4,590 Egyptian pounds, while the price of an ounce of gold closed the week at $3,358, a decline of $68. The price of a gram of 24-karat gold reached 5,246 Egyptian pounds, the price of a gram of 18-karat gold reached 3,934 Egyptian pounds, the price of a gram of 14-karat gold reached about 3,060 Egyptian pounds, and the price of a pound of gold reached about 36,720 Egyptian pounds. Gold prices in local markets fell by EGP 15 during trading on Friday. The price of a gram of 21-karat gold opened at EGP 4,620 and closed at EGP 4,605. Meanwhile, an ounce fell by $27, opening at $3,317 and closing at $3,290. The slight decline in gold prices came despite a decline in US Treasury yields, supported by a firmer dollar, which limited gold's ability to achieve further gains. He stated that recent US inflation data, particularly the core personal consumption expenditures index, showed a decline in the pace of inflation, with the annual reading for April reaching 2.5% compared to 2.6% in March. Meanwhile, the overall inflation rate declined to 2.1% compared to 2.3% the previous month, increasing market expectations of an expected interest rate cut in 2025. Despite signs of a slowdown in inflation, gold prices failed to record a tangible recovery. The recovery in the US consumer confidence index, issued by the University of Michigan, from 50.8 to 52.2, and the improvement in GDP growth expectations, according to the Atlanta Federal Reserve, from 2.2% to 3.8%, also contributed to supporting the dollar's strength and reducing investor appetite for gold. Former US President Donald Trump reignited trade tensions following his statements accusing China of not adhering to the Swiss trade agreement, asserting that "China has completely violated the agreement," he said. Following these statements, markets witnessed noticeable confusion, with stock indices declining, while the dollar regained some momentum, leading to fluctuations in gold prices. In a notable development, a US Federal Appeals Court reinstated most of the tariffs Trump had previously imposed on April 2, known as "Liberation Day," after the International Trade Court invalidated them as illegal. Gold prices also jumped to over $3,363 per ounce, their highest level since early April, following Trump's surprise announcement of raising tariffs on imports from the European Union. However, he reversed the decision on Sunday evening, postponing implementation until July 9, based on what he said was a request from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Despite recent volatility, data confirms that gold remains one of the most prominent beneficiaries of escalating geopolitical tensions and financial uncertainty, especially in light of expectations of interest rate cuts and increased risks associated with the dollar and paper currencies. The US core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index for April showed an ongoing deflationary trend, driven by the Federal Reserve's tightening interest rates. The reading reached 2.5% year-on-year, down from 2.6%. The headline inflation rate was 2.1% year-on-year, lower than March's 2.3% increase. The University of Michigan Consumer Confidence Index improved in May from 50.8 to 52.2, exceeding estimates in its final reading. It's worth noting that inflation expectations have declined. Over the next 12 months, the forecast fell from 7.3% to 6.6%, and over the next five years, it fell from 4.6% to 4.2%. Following the release of the data, the Atlanta Federal Reserve's preliminary GDP Now reading for economic growth for the second quarter of 2025 rose sharply from 2.2% to 3.8%. Federal Reserve officials announced their findings on Thursday, confirming that monetary policy is in good shape and that it will take time to see a shift in the balance of risks related to the Fed's dual mandate. San Francisco Federal Reserve President Mary Daly emphasized that the labor market remains strong, but that reaching the 2% inflation target may not be achieved before the end of 2025, increasing the likelihood of the Fed cutting interest rates twice, as markets currently expect. While markets are pricing in a 52 basis point easing by the end of the year, observers believe that Trump's continued dominance of the political scene, the return of tariffs, and conflicting economic data are all factors that will enhance gold's appeal as a risk hedge. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan
