Driver crashes into crowd celebrating PSG win injuring four family members
Four people were hospitalised after a terrifying incident where a BMW ploughed into PSG supporters
A shocking incident has left four people, including two teenagers, hospitalised after a car ploughed into them following the celebration of Paris Saint-Germain's victory in the Champions League.
The horrifying event unfolded on Saturday, May 31, on Cours Jean-Jaurés in Grenoble, France, when a BMW 1 Series driver, speeding along the central tramway tracks towards Echirolles, attempted a handbrake U-turn at the intersection of Avenue Alsace-Lorraine.
In the process, he struck down four pedestrians: two lads aged 17 and two women, aged 23 and 46, all from the same family. The driver reportedly abandoned his motor and fled the scene, fearing retaliation from the crowd.
However, he handed himself over to the police a few minutes later and was promptly taken into custody. Two women and one of the teenagers sustained critical injuries, while the other teenager is believed to be less severely hurt.
Approximately 30 firefighters and a team from the emergency medical services (SAMU 38) were dispatched to the scene to assist the victims, reports the Mirror. All were treated and transported to the Grenoble Alpes University Hospital for further care.
"A vehicle apparently lost control, hitting four people, two of whom were seriously injured," Grenoble officials told the AfP agency.
Shocking videos of the aftermath showed large crowds of people standing around in horror as the four family members lay stricken on the ground. Others showed panicked PSG supporters running in terror from the incident.
Grenoble police officers faced hostility from groups throwing stones and bottles at them during their intervention. The police had to retaliate with tear gas grenades to push them back.
Meanwhile, across France, football supporters have caused chaos for law enforcement, with around 300 arrests in Paris alone as celebrations turned to riots. Scores of vehicles were burned across the capital while crowds through objects and fireworks at police.

French beach patrols cut during peak summer months as officers are redeployed to the south of the country to deal with tourist season
French beach patrols are left depleted during peak summer months as officers are redeployed to the south of the country to deal with tourist season, it has been claimed. A former Home Office official told The Mail on Sunday it was believed that the French would retain a 'nominal number' on the north coast to stop channel crossings, but would divert resources elsewhere to cope with an influx of tourists flocking to enjoy the sunshine. This would leave patrols in the north at their weakest just as smugglers were ramping up operations to take advantage of calmer seas. It comes as one gendarme told this newspaper there were already 'not enough' police to stop the crossings. Such complaints are unlikely to go down well in Westminster, after the UK struck a deal with the French in 2023 to provide £480 million over three years to tackle the problem. The money was supposed to double the number of personnel deployed on beach patrols, while providing for a new, highly trained, permanent French mobile policing unit, additional drones, aircraft and other surveillance technology. But the Home Office source said it was thought some gendarmes 'get sent to tourist hotspots during the summer', in a move indicative of French priorities. The source also said this was the case for 'big events in Paris' that required heavy policing. The day with the most migrants crossing the Channel this year was May 31, when 1,194 made the trip. That coincided with the Champions League Final, an event that drew a large police operation in Paris due to Paris Saint-Germain's participation. France's PAF frontier police have previously conceded that beach patrols are scaled back during the summer as gendarmes take advantage of generous holiday allowance. UK Border Force sources have warned that people traffickers are aware of these holiday patterns and plotted to 'take advantage'. La Prefecture du Nord – the authority responsible for governing the region around Calais and Dunkirk – declined to comment on the claims. It also rebuffed a request for data showing the monthly patrol numbers. The 2023 deal was also supposed to help fund a new detention centre on the outskirts of Dunkirk. But construction has been delayed until November this year, due to problems with planning approval. When the MoS visited the site on an industrial estate believed to have been chosen for the 140-capacity centre, it found an empty area of grassland that had been cordoned off with rocks.

(Image: Picture credit: Monaghans Irish Bar in Fuengirola, Google Maps) A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed a man was arrested on Friday, June 13. in connection with the shooting. The 44-year-old, from Merseyside, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court this morning (June 14) to start extradition proceedings to Spain. It's understood the man was taken into custody under an international arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities. He has been remanded in custody to appear in court at a later date. The Glasgow Times previously reported Spanish TV aired CCTV which showed 43-year-old Monaghan, with blood seeping through his white t-shirt from a chest wound, propping himself up on a table before collapsing. It came seconds after Lyons Jnr, 46, was shot outside the premises. READ NEXT: Spain bar shootings: Who was Glasgow man Eddie Lyons Jnr? The arrest comes after a Police Scotland spokesperson previously said there was no intelligence to suggest the shootings were linked to recent targeted attacks in the east and west of Scotland which are being investigated under Operation Portaledge. So far, 44 people have been arrested in connection with the incidents. Police added there is also nothing to suggest that the shooting in Fuengirola was planned from within Scotland. A spokesperson previously said: "The investigation into the fatal shootings in Fuengirola is being carried out by Spanish police. "Police Scotland is supporting Spanish police where requested, however, at this time, we have no officers deployed within Spain. "There is currently no intelligence to suggest the deaths of these two men in Spain are linked to the recent criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge. "Any misinformation or speculation linking the events in Spain is not helpful to the ongoing investigations in either country. "There is also nothing to suggest that the shooting in Fuengirola was planned from within Scotland." Monaghan was acquitted of the murder of Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll in 2010 after the judge at his 2012 trial ruled there was insufficient evidence. Carroll was an enforcer for the rival Daniels family. Eddie Lyons Jr was previously shot in 2006, in an incident that was believed to be part of a gang feud. Monaghan was shot in the back after dropping his child off at a primary school in Glasgow in 2017. He is understood to have moved to Spain shortly after.
