‘Nobody's crying!': Debate on gender pay gap in WBNA and sports

Gender discrimination? Or a general disparity in skill? What's the real reason female professional athletes are often paid so much less than men? The WNBA has thrown the issue back into the spotlight as talks to negotiate a new pay deal break down. When some of the world's best female basketballers hit the court for the annual All-Stars game earlier this month... it was their warm-up attire that captured the most global attention. Their shirts read: 'Pay us what you owe us.' The league is in crisis. Players have refused to sign the latest collective bargaining agreement and are demanding fair pay. And you'll note the of the word 'fair' pay. They're not calling for equal pay but rather a fair proportion of the money they generate for the league. NBA players receive between 49 and 51 per cent of their league's revenue. The NHL - about 50 per cent. NFL players get about 48 per cent of league revenue... While WNBA players are only paid 9.3 per cent of the money they generate for their league. That's despite record attendance, viewership and merchandise sales figures during the 2024 season. Some sports do boast pay parity. Grand Slam tennis has the same prize purse for men and women. Indian cricketers receive the same match fees regardless of gender. BUT bonuses and sponsorship deals remain hugely unbalanced. So - with all that in mind – we'll ask our panel: - Why aren't female athletes receiving a fair pay cheque? - Why does women's sport attract less attention - on tv and in person? - How can the challenges for fair pay be overcome?

India withdraw from veterans' cricket semifinal against Pakistan amid tensions

LONDON: India have withdrawn from a semifinal clash with Pakistan in a tournament featuring retired players amid tension between the nuclear-armed neighbors, organizers of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) said on Wednesday. A group match between the two teams was also called off earlier this month in the veterans' competition sanctioned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Tickets will be refunded for the semifinal match which was scheduled to take place in Birmingham on Thursday, WCL organizers said in a statement on Instagram, adding that Pakistan will advance to the final. India and Pakistan, who have not played bilateral cricket since 2013, are set to face off in the Asia Cup on September 14. The WCL is in its second edition, running from July 18 to August 2 in England, with six teams representing India, Pakistan, England, Australia, South Africa and West Indies competing across four venues including Edgbaston, Headingley, Leicester and Northampton. A total of 18 matches are being played in this round-robin T20 format with playoffs at its conclusion. The tournament was launched in 2024 and returns this year with high-profile former international stars like Shahid Afridi, Yuvraj Singh, Kevin Pietersen, Brett Lee, Eoin Morgan and Chris Gayle drawing crowds. The India Champions, captained by Yuvraj Singh, entered as defending champions after beating Pakistan in last year's final. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport

Austin Wells Loses Track Of The Outs In 9th Inning And Costs The Yankees A Late Opportunity

Perhaps nobody was happier the Yankees won Wednesday night than catcher Austin Wells after his embarrassing mental lapse on the bases cost New York an opportunity in the ninth inning. 'I think I just was being an idiot,' he said. Anthony Volpe hit a tying homer off Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks with one out in the ninth, then Wells singled and advanced to second base when Trent Grisham tried to bunt for a hit. Grisham was thrown out at first for the second out and credited with a sacrifice. Wells, however, thought the inning was over and wandered off the bag. He got tagged in a rundown for the third out, sending a back-and-forth game to extra innings as fans in the Yankee Stadium crowd of 45,355 groaned. 'He thought there were three outs,' New York manager Aaron Boone said. 'Obviously can't happen. With the base coaches, we say the right thing. We go through with the pitcher, their time to the plate, and number of outs. What do you say? Can't happen.' Instead of having seven-time All-Star and 2022 NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt at bat with the potential winning run on second base, the Yankees were resigned to keep slugging it out with Tampa Bay in extra innings. 'Just thought there was three outs,' Wells said. 'Very embarrassed and disappointed for sure. You know you let the guys down when you do that. You give away an out like that in a big spot, so that's disappointing–and definitely no good thoughts going on there.' Fortunately for Wells, his teammates bailed him out. New York fell behind 4-3 in the 10th, tied it again on Cody Bellinger's run-scoring triple, and finally won 5-4 in the 11th on Ryan McMahon's game-ending single to deep center field after a critical balk by reliever Kevin Kelly. The Yankees remained four games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East. 'I mean, everyone did such a great job tonight,' Wells said. 'Started in the beginning with (rookie pitcher Will Warren). Gave us a great position to come back in that game. And I mean all the huge hits that happened and then all the huge innings that the relievers threw. What a game. And that's just something that we've been needing, and to come back like that is huge.'
