Poland manager Probierz resigns after row with Lewandowski
Poland manager Michal Probierz resigned from his position on Thursday, four days after star striker Robert Lewandowski said he will no longer play for the national team under him.
The 36-year-old Barcelona striker said his trust had been betrayed and he was very hurt by the way Probierz told him he was being replaced as team captain.
Lewandowski, Poland's record goal-scorer, said on Monday that he received a short call from Probierz as he was putting his children to sleep and that a statement about him losing the captaincy appeared soon after on the Polish Football Association website.
Probierz decided to replace Lewandowski as captain with midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
"I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach," Probierz said in a statement.

Remco Evenepoel, riding for Soudal Quick-Step, has recently won Stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné as he finished the 17.4km course with a final time of 20 minutes and 50 seconds. This victory led him to lead the overall race standings and granted him the yellow jersey. 'I think the advantage I had was a lot of headwind in the valleys… I used that to really take the benefit of my position, and then the climb, I just went as fast as possible,' the rider said. He added, 'We had a perfect plan for the pacing strategy. I'm very happy to have put over one second a kilometre on everybody, and for some more than two… I'm super proud and happy with the feeling I have now. I'm feeling pretty good, and it's always nice to bring home a world tour victory.' Evenepoel: 'Much better than I was last year' Evenepoel was 21 seconds faster than Jonas Vingegaard, who is riding for Visma-Lease a Bike and placed second. Furthermore, he is also 49 seconds ahead of Tadej Pogacar, who is riding for the UAE Team Emirates XRG and finished fourth. The Soudal Quick-Step rider shared that he has been preparing really hard for the races. 'In terms of weight, I'm already pretty good… Much better than I was last year at this point, so I'm just happy that I've been working super hard behind the scenes. 'I'm feeling good on the climbs, on the flats and on the descents as well, so it's a good step forward to what we have to expect for the next days… We just have to keep building and take it day by day. For sure, there will be a lot of pressure in the weekend from other teams, but with the victor,y I'm confident I can do well,' he added. Evenepoel shared a social media post with a caption 'Flying to victory.🥇🌈🟡🔥… Special feeling to take win #1000 for @soudalquickstepteam, one for the entire team, one for Patrick, one for history.🏆🐺… We stay focused for the rest of the week.👊🏼' See also Speedway SEA Championship returns for OCBC Cycle 2024 Netizens celebrated Remco's stage win with enthusiastic messages of support, calling it both thrilling and well-earned. 'I don't think about what's happened in the past': Singapore's Max Maeder is all about consistency amid change
But fame has also provided the teenager, described by his father in a previous interview as "sincerely contribution-minded", with a bigger platform to contribute. "It's a great thing to be able to have something behind the words: 'I want to contribute' ... It's no longer some plan; pipe dream in the future," said Maeder. "It is something that you are doing actively or that you're in the process of doing ... And it's great." This year has not been without challenges, including a injury to his right shoulder - sustained in a crash during training two months ago - which Maeder described as the worst he's ever had. 'I was warming up ... the wind was strong, but I wasn't traveling at a high speed. It was relatively low speed. So as I fell down and had the crash, I thought: 'Oh, it's so slow' ... and I didn't tense up, I didn't prepare myself, I didn't brace," Maeder explained. "And then the strong winds pulled a little bit harder than I was anticipating ... The first thing I noticed was my shoulder is not moving right. It does not feel like it's moving in the right position." His shoulder joint clicked back into place 30 seconds later, and Maeder was able to compete in a regatta 10 days later. "Since the injury, I competed in two events where I felt nothing. It's just to be prudent and (to have) added care, to strengthen the shoulder muscles a little bit and decrease the risk (with exercises)," said Maeder. He has at least three competitions pencilled in for the second half of 2025, including the World Championships and the SEA Games, should the sport be included. The plan is to put in the work with his younger brother Karl, along with the latter's training partner and coach. And of the many insights gleaned throughout his still-blossoming sporting career, a recent one is to accept that he will not be the best at certain times. "You don't beat yourself up about stuff that you did badly, or you don't celebrate a win for too long," he added.

Sporting say no gentleman's agreement, or offers, for Gyokeres transfer
Sporting President Frederico Varandas has shot down reports the club would accept 70 million euros ($81.05 million) for Viktor Gyokeres and said he had not received an offer for the Sweden striker who has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal. Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals last season, has three years left on his contract, which contains a 100 million euros release clause. While Varandas said the club would not seek the full amount of the clause for the 27-year-old, he denied reports there was a "gentleman's agreement" that would allow him to leave for 70 million euros in the transfer window. "I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for 60 million euros plus 10 million euros because I never promised that," Varandas told reporters on Wednesday. "To this day Sporting has not had an offer for Gyokeres — neither today nor last season." Gyokeres has bagged 97 goals in 102 matches for the Portuguese side since his 2023 move from Coventry City, winning the Primeira Liga title in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. No player in European leagues had scored more league goals this season than Gyokeres (39 in 33 games). The striker said in a post on Instagram: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." Varandas said he had told Gyokeres' agent that while they would not demand the full release clause the club would not set a specific price that would trigger a transfer. "I said this sentence: 'It's not worth us setting a value because I don't know what will happen in a year's time," he added. ($1 = 0.8636 euros)
