Morocco reveals ambitious £887m plan to host African F1 race
Morocco looks set to enter the competitive race to host an F1 race in Africa with a spectacular $1.2m (£887m) plan revealed near the coastal city of Tangier.
Both South Africa – at either the Kyalami track near Johannesburg or a Cape Town street circuit, and Rwanda have expressed strong interest in hosting a grand prix, perhaps as early as 2027.
Africa is the only habitable continent that F1 does not host a race in, amidst the congested 24-event calendar. The last grand prix in Africa was the 1993 South African GP.
But now, Morocco is aiming to build a mega-project 20km south of Tangier, which will include a Grade 1 circuit fit to host F1 and MotoGP, a theme park, a shopping mall and a marina.
The architect behind the plan, ex-McLaren and Lotus team principal Eric Boullier, has his sights set on the project being something close to a 'mini-Abu Dhabi.'
'We went there [Tangier] to do a feasibility study to assess the potential of one day Formula 1 racing in Morocco,' Boullier told RacingNews365.
"We found the spot they selected met all the criteria, and from that point, we built the project. This is quite a big project. It is a mini-Abu Dhabi, if I may compare, creating a completely independent ecosystem, obviously based on tourism.
"It will have a huge impact on the region, based south of Tangier, so additional hotels and the airport are all within 15 kilometres. It's a strategic project for the country, a very serious project, which needs to have the approval at the highest level.
'If we get that, it will tick all the boxes of what F1 wants to achieve in Africa. It would make sense to hold F1 there, making it the pinnacle of the year, but with an ecosystem created to survive all year."
The project has already generated $800m of private investment, with the hope that more will be obtained if the spectacular plans are approved at the highest level in Morocco.
Boullier was previously managing director of the French Grand Prix, last on the calendar in 2022 at Circuit Paul Ricard.

Michael Schumacher's 'very, very close' confidante gives new update on his real 'state of health' - and what to expect in future
A 'very, very close' confidante of Michael Schumacher has reportedly provided a new health update regarding the Formula One icon. Schumacher has not appeared in public since his accident 2013 and is cared for by a team of medical staff and his wife Corinna at their Lake Geneva home. The Schumacher family remain protective of his privacy and little is known about the specifics of his condition but now it has been reported that a close friend of the F1 legend has come forward. Craig Scarborough, who has covered the sport for around 25 years and interviewed Michael many times, says that he's spoken to a 'close' confidant of the driver. He told The Sun: 'I spoke to someone who is very, very close to him and they just explained we're not going to hear any more from him. 'He's in a comfortable position as far as he can be with his state of health.' Scarborough's update on Schumacher comes shortly after Flavio Briatore gave an insight into the former driver's condition, 12-years on from the skiing accident that gave him the life-changing brain injury. Briatore, 75, led Benetton when Schumacher won his first two titles back to back and now works for Alpine as executive adviser and de facto team principal. 'If I close my eyes', he told Corriere della Sera, 'I see him smiling after a victory. 'I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed. Corinna and I talk often, though.' Briatore's update comes after his ex-wife Elisabetta Gregoraci had previously revealed: 'Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes. 'Only three people can visit him and I know who they are.' Claims that Schumacher is unable to speak appeared to be supported by his son, Mick, during a 2021 Netflix documentary about his father's life. The 26-year-old driver said: 'I think dad and me, we would understand each other now in a different way now.' In the documentary, Corinna did also provide a rare update, revealing he continues to undergo rehabilitation for the life-changing injuries he suffered and claimed he is now 'different, but here'. In April, Schumacher signed a special helmet with the help of Corinna to be auctioned off for charity. Johnny Herbert, Schumacher's teammate at Benetton in 1994 and 1995, said his signature was an 'emotional' moment. Herbert expressed his hope that Schumacher's contribution was a sign that the 56-year-old is 'on the mend'. 'It's wonderful news that Michael Schumacher signed Jackie Stewart's helmet,' Herbert told FastSlots. 'It was a wonderful moment. 'We haven't seen something emotional like this in years, and hopefully, it's a sign.' Schumacher is one of the most successful F1 drivers of all time, having claimed the world title in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004. He also added 71 fastest laps and 155 podiums to his name during his iconic racing career. When Briatore was asked who the greatest driver of all time is, he told Corriere de Sera: 'I don't know who the greatest is, because we've had Schumacher, Senna, Alonso. 'Now, the number one is definitely (Max) Verstappen. I have two cars at Alpine, so I would like to have two Verstappens.'

China's BYD to nearly triple South Africa dealers' network by next year
JOHANNESBURG, June 5 (Reuters) - Chinese electric-vehicle giant BYD ( opens new tab plans to nearly triple its dealership network in South Africa by next year as it looks to grow its market share in the country, a senior executive told Reuters. BYD's move comes at a time of growing competition in Africa's largest automotive market, where sales of new energy vehicles are rising and other Chinese companies - such as GAC ( opens new tab, Chery and GWM ( opens new tab - are also making inroads. Launched in 2023, with its BYD battery electric ATTO 3 vehicle, the automaker has about 13 dealerships. "By the end of the year, we will have about 20 dealerships around the country. The aim is to expand that to about 30, 35 the next year," Steve Chang, General Manager of BYD Auto South Africa told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday. BYD currently offers six models in the South African market, with its plug-in hybrid Shark pick-up, hybrid SEALION 6, and pure electric SEALION 7 SUV models launched in April, completing its hybrid and electric dual-powertrain strategy. The dealership expansion will help BYD become a fairly known brand and capture more buyers across a country that is slowly transitioning to electrified vehicles. In 2024, sales of new energy vehicles - a term that describes battery-powered fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars - rose to 15,611 units from 7,782 units in 2023, according to data from automotive industry body NAAMSA. While the share of NEVs to total car sales is still low, BYD is hoping to capture the market early on, in preparation for a meaningful transition, Chang said. "We want to educate and cultivate the market of South Africa and make sure that the South African consumers can catch up with the rest of the world," Chang added. The uptake of electric vehicles and investment in Africa is quite slow relative to emerging market peers due to limited charging infrastructure, unstable power supply and high import duties compared to fossil-fuelled cars. But BYD sees potential. "South Africa is actually one of the most important automotive markets in the southern Hemisphere. It's probably the biggest market in all of Africa, so it's a market that we have to look at and see how we can develop the market," Chang said.
