
China's BYD to nearly triple South Africa dealers' network by next year
JOHANNESBURG, June 5 (Reuters) - Chinese electric-vehicle giant BYD (002594.SZ), opens new tab plans to nearly triple its dealership network in South Africa by next year as it looks to grow its market share in the country, a senior executive told Reuters.
BYD's move comes at a time of growing competition in Africa's largest automotive market, where sales of new energy vehicles are rising and other Chinese companies - such as GAC (601238.SS), opens new tab, Chery and GWM (601633.SS), opens new tab - are also making inroads.
Launched in 2023, with its BYD battery electric ATTO 3 vehicle, the automaker has about 13 dealerships.
"By the end of the year, we will have about 20 dealerships around the country. The aim is to expand that to about 30, 35 the next year," Steve Chang, General Manager of BYD Auto South Africa told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.
BYD currently offers six models in the South African market, with its plug-in hybrid Shark pick-up, hybrid SEALION 6, and pure electric SEALION 7 SUV models launched in April, completing its hybrid and electric dual-powertrain strategy.
The dealership expansion will help BYD become a fairly known brand and capture more buyers across a country that is slowly transitioning to electrified vehicles.
In 2024, sales of new energy vehicles - a term that describes battery-powered fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars - rose to 15,611 units from 7,782 units in 2023, according to data from automotive industry body NAAMSA.
While the share of NEVs to total car sales is still low, BYD is hoping to capture the market early on, in preparation for a meaningful transition, Chang said.
"We want to educate and cultivate the market of South Africa and make sure that the South African consumers can catch up with the rest of the world," Chang added.
The uptake of electric vehicles and investment in Africa is quite slow relative to emerging market peers due to limited charging infrastructure, unstable power supply and high import duties compared to fossil-fuelled cars.
But BYD sees potential.
"South Africa is actually one of the most important automotive markets in the southern Hemisphere. It's probably the biggest market in all of Africa, so it's a market that we have to look at and see how we can develop the market," Chang said.

A Japanese company has halted construction on a $1.6 billion factory in South Carolina to help make batteries for electric BMWs, citing 'policy and market uncertainty.' While AESC didn't specify what those problems are, South Carolina's Republican governor said the company is dealing with the potential loss of federal tax breaks for electric vehicle buyers and incentives for EV businesses as well as tariff uncertainties from President Donald Trump 's administration. 'What we're doing is urging caution — let things play out because all of the these changes are taking place,' Gov. Henry McMaster said. AESC announced the suspension in construction of its plant in Florence on Thursday, 'Due to policy and market uncertainty, we are pausing construction at our South Carolina facility at this time," the company's statement said. AESC promised to restart construction, although it didn't say when, and vowed to meet its commitment to hire 1,600 workers and invest $1.6 billion. The company said it has already invested $1 billion in the Florence plant. The battery maker based in Japan also has facilities in China, the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Germany. In the U.S., AESC has a plant in Tennessee and is building one in Kentucky. The statement didn't mention any changes with other plants. The South Carolina plant is supposed to sell battery cells to BMW, which is building its own battery assembly site near its giant auto plant in Greer. BMW said the construction pause by AESC doesn't change its plans to open its plant in 2026. AESC has already rolled back its South Carolina plans. They announced a second factory on the Florence site, but then said earlier this year that their first plant should be able to handle BMW's demand. That prompted South Carolina officials to withdraw $111 million in help they planned to provide. The company is still getting $135 million in grants from the South Carolina Department of Commerce and $121 million in bonds and the agency said a construction pause won't prompt them to claw back that offer. South Carolina is investing heavily in electric vehicles. Volkswagen-owned Scout Motors plans to invest more than $4 billion and hire 10,000 people for a plant to build its new electric SUVs scheduled to open in 2027. The state has for decades made big bets on foreign manufacturers like BMW, Michelin and Samsung that have paid off with an economic boom this century, but there is uneasiness that Trump's flirtation with high tariffs might stagger or even ruin those important partnerships. McMaster told people to relax as state and business leaders are talking to Trump's administration and things will work out. 'I think the goal of the president and the administration is to have robust economic growth and prosperity and there is no doubt there has to be changes made in our international trade posture and President Trump is addressing that,' McMaster told reporters Thursday.

‘Cable cowboy' to put 30,000 EV chargers on Britain's roads
'Cable cowboy' John Malone is bankrolling a deal to put 30,000 new electric vehicle (EV) chargers on Britain's roads. Liberty Global, which is controlled by the US billionaire, is spearheading a £300m investment in charge point operator Believ that will improve public access to chargers across the UK. The deal will deliver a major boost to the expansion of the UK's public charging network, which is a crucial factor in persuading drivers to switch to EVs. The Government has set a target of reaching 300,000 public charge points by the end of the decade, but drivers currently only have access to around 80,000. Believ will partner with both public and private sector organisations to roll out the new chargers where they are needed most. Most of the investment will go towards on-street, residential locations to help drivers without off-street parking transition to EVs. Funding will also be allocated to rapid and ultra-rapid charging hubs, as well as rural locations. Denver-based Liberty Global is controlled by Mr Malone, a Trump-supporting billionaire who is one of the largest individual landowners in the US. The 84-year-old holds a number of US media and entertainment assets, including Formula One. He is also a shareholder and board member at Warner Bros Discovery. An aggressive dealmaker, Mr Malone's holdings in paid TV and telecoms have earned him the nickname the 'cable cowboy'. Expansion into EV charging represents a new market for Mr Malone but builds on his other business interests. Believ partners with Virgin Media O2, which is also jointly owned by Liberty Global, to deploy its charging infrastructure. Guy Bartlett, the chief executive of Believ, said the funding 'recognises the scale of investment required and the urgency of the need'. He added: 'Confidence in EVs will continue to grow as drivers see more infrastructure going into the ground.' Figures published this week by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that one in five new cars sold in Britain were battery-powered. Sales have been boosted by heavy discounting, but a rise in EV chargers is also starting to pay off. A record of nearly 3,000 charging devices were added to Britain's roads in April, equivalent to one every 29 minutes. Lilian Greenwood, the roads minister, said: 'We're working hard to ensure all drivers can charge easily and conveniently – no matter where they are. 'Believ's investment is a brilliant vote of confidence in the transition to electric and another fantastic example of Government and industry working together to roll out tens of thousands of charge points across the country.' In addition to private funding, the Government has pledged £2.3bn to support the switch to EVs, with a £200m budget to help expand public charging and a dedicated £381m fund for local authorities. End of tax loophole for Shein starting to have impact, say South African retailers
JOHANNESBURG, June 6 (Reuters) - South Africa's closure of a tax loophole that benefited global discount e-commerce retailers Shein and Temu is starting to show positive signs as some consumers reject the higher prices, the CEOs of local fashion retailers Mr Price (MRPJ.J), opens new tab and TFG (TFGJ.J), opens new tab said on Friday. Last November, South Africa's tax authority ended the practice known as "de minimis", which allowed companies to drop-ship packages valued at less than 500 rand ($28.12) from suppliers in China to consumers in South Africa, paying a flat rate of 20% in lieu of customs duties, and no VAT of 15%. Other markets including the United States, Britain and the European Union are also closing or planning to close loopholes that have given low-cost online platforms like Shein and Temu, owned by PDD Holdings' (PDD.O), opens new tab, pricing advantages. "There's nothing punitive about them, it's just levelling the playing field so that everybody trading in South Africa and importing products pays exactly the same duties," TFG CEO Anthony Thunström told Reuters in an interview after the company's earnings release. Both Thunström and Mr Price CEO Mark Blair said it was difficult to get official data to quantify the exact impact on the fast-fashion giants. "But our understanding is that the closure of that loophole has significantly slowed down some of the international pure play online into South Africa," Thunström said. Local brick-and-mortar fashion and e-commerce retailers had urged South African regulators to impose a 45% import duty on all clothing imports, no matter the price, to level the playing field. "One thing all of us have seen on Shein is the social media outrage that's now taken place because of higher prices, so it does make us feel comfortable that the new legislation has been applied correctly," Blair told investors during an earnings presentation. "I think it's still a bit erratic, not across the board and if I look at our own e-commerce sales, it grew slightly ahead of our store sales, so there must be some positive impact," he added. Mr Price and TFG are also investing in technology and enhancing product ranges as they bid to gain market share. Mr Price said on Friday that it expects to invest 1.6 billion rand this financial year ending March 2026 in about 200 new stores, supply chain, store revamps and technology, while TFG said it plans to open over 100 new stores.
