Android 16 finally starts to roll out to Pixel Phones- Know what's new
Google has officially started to roll out the stable version of Android 16 to Pixel devices, bringing new UI enhancements and features. This news comes soon after Apple announced its iOS 26 for iPhones, reviving the years of rivalry between the Android and iOS ecosystems. Android 16 version comes early as per its scheduled timeline, but it includes several new features that may come in handy to users. This year, Google has brought new productivity features, advanced protection, accessibility upgrades and more. However, the update is yet to include the previewed Material 3 Expressive design. While Android 16 is not a major overhaul as the iOS 26 update, but Google has introduced some seamless upgrades that make the experience look intuitive. The Pixel devices will start getting the Android 16 update as Google has confirmed the stable rollout of the new generation update. While many Pixel users were rooting for the new Material 3 Expressive redesign, Google may have pushed the UI changes for September and only rolled out a few features as part of the initial release.
As of now, Android 16 introduces the 'Live Updates' feature, enabling users to access real-time notifications from ride-share and food delivery apps. This feature will also be compatible with Samsung Now Bar and OPPO/OnePlus' Live Alerts. Google is also making the notification tab organised by grouping the notifications coming from a single app. Google says that it will 'help reduce information overload.'

Google further enhances the calling experience for people with hearing aids by allowing users to leverage the phone's microphone for calls instead of LE audio hearing devices when there is too much environmental noise. Additionally, users will also be able to customise volume settings directly from their phone.
Android 16 also bring Advanced Protection, which Google says is the 'strongest mobile device protection.' This security feature mainly claims to protect users from online attacks, harmful apps, malicious websites, scam calls and other threats.

Android 16 is rolling out to Pixel devices that include the Pixel 6 Series, Pixel 7 Series, Pixel 8 Series, Pixel 9 Series, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. Google also confirmed that other smartphone brands will roll out Android 16-based updates later this year.

AI-powered strategy helps Samsung retake lead from Apple in Q1 2025 smartphone market: IDC Report
The global smartphone market saw modest year-on-year growth of 0.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2025, with total shipments reaching 301.4 million units, according to the latest figures from the International Data Corporation (IDC). Amid a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions and tariff uncertainty between the United States and China, Samsung reclaimed its position as the world's leading smartphone vendor, edging past Apple thanks to its AI-integrated product portfolio. Samsung shipped 60.6 million units during the quarter, maintaining a 20.1 per cent market share, a slight increase of 0.6 per cent compared to Q1 2024. The South Korean tech giant's renewed dominance was fuelled by the strong performance of its flagship Galaxy S25 and the more affordable Galaxy A36 and A56, which brought advanced AI features to the mid-range segment. 'Samsung's focus on embedding AI capabilities across its product range — not just in premium models but in accessible mid-tier devices - has resonated with consumers, particularly in cost-sensitive markets,' said Francisco Jeronimo, Vice President of Client Devices at IDC. 'This broad AI strategy has given Samsung a crucial competitive edge at a time when market dynamics are shifting rapidly.' Apple, meanwhile, posted its best-ever Q1 in terms of units shipped, delivering 58.7 million iPhones, an 11.6 per cent increase year-on-year. This impressive growth was largely driven by an aggressive stockpiling strategy ahead of anticipated U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports, as well as robust demand in several international markets. Despite this, Apple narrowly missed out on the top spot and faced headwinds in China, where its Pro models did not benefit from a government subsidy scheme targeting devices under CNY6,000 (approx. $820). 'The U.S. market grew by 8.3 per cent in Q1, reflecting strong consumer demand and urgency to purchase ahead of potential price increases,' noted Anthony Scarsella, IDC's Research Director for Client Devices. 'Apple capitalised on this moment well, but ongoing volatility in trade policy makes sustained momentum uncertain.' Chinese brands also made notable gains, particularly within their domestic market. Xiaomi and Vivo benefitted significantly from a state-backed subsidy scheme aimed at boosting consumption. Xiaomi shipped 41.8 million units (up 2.4 per cent), while Vivo saw a 6.5 per cent increase, reaching 22.7 million units. OPPO, despite regaining fourth place, experienced a decline of 6.6 per cent due to weaker international performance. The IDC report also revealed a shrinking share for smaller vendors grouped under the 'Others' category, whose collective shipments dropped 6.1 per cent year-on-year, indicating continued consolidation among the top players. 'Looking ahead, vendors will need to balance innovation, affordability, and geopolitical risk in order to sustain growth,' concluded Jeronimo. 'Samsung's current lead highlights how strategic product development, especially around emerging technologies like AI, can shape market leadership even in uncertain times.'

Google offers buyouts to workers Google is offering buyouts to more employees in another round of layoffs as the tech giant awaits a court verdict in its search and ads antitrust lawsuit. The Sundar Pichai-led company has confirmed the news although it hasn't disclosed the number of employees who will be affected. The employees are spread across the search, advertising, research and engineering segments. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta is deciding whether to ban Google's exclusive agreement with Apple which sets Chrome as its search browser. The judgment is expected to be given before Labour Day after which Google can appeal last year's decision where the company was defined as a monopoly. The federal judge ruled that Google's digital ads business was said to abuse its market power and tamp down on competition. In 2023, the company laid off 12,000 workers post a hiring splurge that Big Tech companies were on during the pandemic. OpenAI in talks with Saudi Arabia, Indian investors to raise funds OpenAI is reportedly in discussions with new investors including Saudi's PIF, India's Reliance Industries and existing shareholder United Arab Emirates' MGX to raise $40 billion in funds. The investors are expected to invest at least hundreds of millions of dollars each, a report by 'The Information' said. The funds will be used to develop AI infrastructure as a part of their Stargate venture which is in partnership with SoftBank. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with Indian IT Minister earlier this year, after which he also planned to meet the Abu Dhabi investment group MGX. The AI firm is also speaking with Coatue and Founders Fund to raise atleast $100 million each. The report also stated that OpenAI could be raising an additional $17 billion in 2027. OpenAI hasn't confirmed the reports yet. Meta, TikTok challenge fees in EU court Meta and TikTok are fighting EU regulators on a supervisory fee and that's levied and how it's calculated, in the second highest court in Europe. The social media platforms called the fee disproportionate and measured on a flawed methodology. The companies along with 16 other tech companies had to pay a supervisory fee which was 0.05% of their annual worldwide net income under the Digital Services Act that became a law in 2022. The fee intends to cover the EU's cost of monitoring their compliance with the law. The size of the annual fee is based on the number of average monthly active users for each platform. Meta said that it wasn't trying to avoid its share of the fee but it was questioning the way the amount had been calculated. A representative for TikTok said that the EU had counted users who logged into their phones and from their laptops twice.
