Star All-Rounder Ruled Out Of New Zealand's Tri-Series In Zimbabwe

News1818-07-2025
New Zealand Cricket withdrew Glenn Phillips from the T20I tri-series and Test series in Zimbabwe due to a groin injury. Tim Robinson will replace him in the T20I series.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has withdrawn all-rounder Glenn Phillips from the men's squad for the ongoing T20I tri-series and the two Test series that'll begin on July 24 in Zimbabwe. He will return to New Zealand.
The board in a statement on Friday, said Phillips suffered a right groin injury during the Major League Cricket (MLC) — the T20 competition in the US — final held between MI New York and Washington Freedom. He was assessed on arrival in Zimbabwe where it was determined that he would require a few weeks to rehabilitate.
'It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre. Much like Finn, we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. We know he was eager to get out on the field for the BLACKCAPS and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens," head coach Rob Walter said in a statement.
Tim Robinson will replace him in the squad. Robinson joined the squad as cover for players involved in the MLC final and will now stick around for the remainder of the T20I tri-series. Robinson, 23, hit 75 not out off 57 balls to win the Player of the Match for New Zealand in their 21-run win over South Africa in the tri-series game on July 16.
NZC further said they'll name Phillips' replacement for the Test series in due course. Mitch Hay and Jimmy Neesham, who were also called in as cover alongside Robinson, will join him on the way back home.
One of the most athletic true all-rounders — who can bat, bowl, keep wickets and is electric in the outfield — in the world, this is not the first time Phillips has been unlucky with a groin injury. He was ruled out of the IPL 2025 with the Gujarat Titans due to a similar concern.

Mohammed Siraj couldn't forgive himself, kept thinking about Harry Brook's catch: ‘How could I do this…'

Life came full circle for Mohammed Siraj in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. From the extreme lows at the Lord's Test to the extreme highs at the Oval, the 31-year-old pacer from Hyderabad witnessed a plethora of emotions, perfectly explaining that sport is a great leveller. At Lord's, Siraj was in his haunches after seeing the bails come off. The No.11 batter played a perfect forward defence off the bowling of Shoaib Bashir; however, the ball rolled back onto the stumps, and the bails fell, giving England a thrilling 22-run win. Mohammed Siraj returned with five wickets in second innings of the Oval Test. (Action Images via Reuters) However, fate had ecstasy in store for Siraj, too, as the Indian pacer led Shubman Gill and co. to a thrilling win at the Oval. He returned with five wickets in the second innings, giving the side a thrilling six-run win to level the five-match series 2-2. But the joy of leading India to a win didn't come easily. Siraj was once again at the centre on Day 4 when he failed to grab the catch off Harry Brook at the boundary ropes. The right-handed batter went for a pull shot off the bowling of Prasidh Krishna. However, he miscued it, and Siraj settled at the boundary ropes for what seemed a simple catch. Siraj did take the catch cleanly; however, his foot touched the boundary cushion, and as a result, Brook got a reprieve. England added six more runs to the total in their chase of 374. The 26-year-old batter went on to score 111 runs, and England looked set to make it 3-1. However, once Harry Brook fell, the floodgates opened, and India barged through the door. Siraj did the clean-up job on the final day, where England required 35 runs more with four wickets in hand. 'To be honest, I cannot describe my emotions. When I was going to sleep after stumps on Day 4, I kept thinking about the dropped catch of Harry Brook. I was just thinking, 'How could I have done such a thing?' If I had taken it cleanly, we wouldn't be here right now. We would have been chilling in our hotel rooms,' said Siraj in a video posted on the BCCI website. 'God's plan' Siraj finished as the leading wicket-taker in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with 23 scalps to his name. The 31-year-old really stepped up in Jasprit Bumrah's absence, thriving in the responsibility of leading the pace attack. In the two Tests where Bumrah didn't play, Siraj brought out the best in himself, leading the attack and ensuring India's victory. 'But I guess it was God's plan. The result is there for everyone to see. I wake up in the morning, I knew that I could make it happen. I always had the belief in myself. I put the 'believe' wallpaper on my phone. I just want to thank everyone. Every batter, bowler, hats off to them. This comeback was crazy,' said Siraj. Siraj who dropped a banger the T20 World Cup 2024, saying, 'I only believe in Jassi Bhai', came up with another astonishing line, perhaps realising his own importance this time around. 'I missed Jassi Bhai. He has a different presence about himself. I only believe in Jassi bhai and myself,' he added.

How Chris Woakes overcame injury to deliver for England at crucial moment

Chris Woakes It was a remarkable scene to end a remarkable series. On Friday morning. Chris Woakes was ruled out for the rest of the fifth Test match at The Oval on Friday morning. Three days later, though, he walked out to the crease with his left arm in a sling beneath his jumper, prepared to bat one-handed and on his non-dominant side, as England needed just 17 runs to win. Woakes stepped out of the dressing-room from the Bedser Stand. The drama and tension of the series decider only enhanced after this move, making the moment as moving as Rishabh Pant's hobble walk to the crease in Manchester with a fractured foot. England are yet to provide an official statement on Woakes injury England are yet to give an official statement, but it is believed that Woakes dislocated his shoulder while diving in the field on the opening day of the Test. He is set to consult a specialist this week to assess the severity of the injury. Woakes has been ruled out for the rest of the summer and is already a major doubt for the opening Ashes Test in Perth on November 21. With the final delivery of the 83rd over, Prasidh Krishna bowled England's No. 10 Josh Tongue, saving Woakes from facing a ball and allowing Atkinson to keep the strike. Woakes was clearly uncomfortable, though, as he grimaced after each run and asked umpire Ahsan Raza for assistance when his sling came loose during a bye. Woakes would have been replaced immediately following his injury on Thursday night in most other sports, but cricket is different. On Saturday, instead, he remained in the dressing room and observed England's three-man attack in action. He went to the indoor school for a practice batting session on Sunday afternoon as the chase continued. Woakes had a throwdown session before walking out to bat on final day Woakes initially tried to hold the bat normally while facing a few throwdowns, but as the tempo increased, the pain became unbearable. He then adopted a left-hander's stance and began batting with his left arm back in a sling. In addition to providing him with control over his 'top' hand, this helped him keep his injured shoulder as far away from the ball as possible. On Monday, Woakes required help from England physio Ben Davies to get padded up and had to improvise with his gear. He wore two small arm guards on his right arm and added as much protection as possible to his left, which was tucked under a jumper to keep it stable. Mohammed Siraj became furious when Woakes fought his way through for a bye at the end of his opening over at the crease. 'Nahin bola tu?' After landing his wide yorker and watching Dhruv Jurel's underarm throw miss the stumps, he asked Shubman Gill, 'Didn't you tell him?' Woakes, however, had bigger concerns, grimacing in pain and holding his left arm. Woakes managed to take off his helmet to put his left arm back in place. He asked Raza for help after realising that he won't be able to put his glove back on alone. As Woakes took a deep breath and prepared himself to stand at the non-striker's end once more, the packed fifth-day crowd began to grasp the full extent of what he was enduring.
