Nepal opens 97 remote peaks for free climbing
In a bid to attract climbers to less-visited areas, the Himalayan nation's government has waived the royalty for 97 peaks in Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces for the next two years.
These mountains, ranging from 5,870 metres to 7,132 metres in altitude, are expected to draw tourists to areas with limited economic activity.
'The aim is to bring more visitors to remote regions, create jobs and generate income for local communities," Himal Gautam, Director at the Department of Tourism, told PTI. He said the initiative will also help promote Nepal's unexplored mountain destinations.
The government has also proposed making it mandatory for climbers attempting Mt Everest to first scale at least one 7,000-metre peak.
Earlier in the year, Nepal had announced that the fee to scale the 8,88.86-metre Mt Everest will be raised from USD 11,000 to USD 15,000 per person, effective from September 1, 2025. PTI SBP SKS GRS SKS GRS GRS

Delhi-bound Air India flight gets diverted to Chennai after snag
New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) An Air India plane flying from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi was diverted to Chennai Sunday evening due to a technical issue, the airline said. The flight AI2455, operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft, was airborne for more than two hours, according to information available on the flight tracking website 'The flight crew of AI2455 operating from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi on 10 August made a precautionary diversion to Chennai due to a suspected technical issue and given the weather conditions en route," the airline said in a statement. Air India said the flight landed safely in Chennai, where the aircraft will undergo the necessary checks. Alternative arrangements are being made to fly the passengers to their destinations at the earliest, Air India said, and regretted the inconvenience caused. UP free bus travel scheme: Number of passengers expected to hit 75 lakh by midnight on Sunday
The Yogi Adityanath government has offered free travel to women in the state on Raksha Bandhan on UPSRTC buses from August 8 to 10. Lucknow, Aug 10 (PTI) The number of bus passengers is expected to hit 75 lakh by midnight on Sunday following the Uttar Pradesh government's free bus travel scheme for women on Raksha Bandhan. UPSRTC MD Masoom Ali Sarwar said the buses usually carry 14 to15 lakh passengers every day, but in just the first two days of Raksha Bandhan, the numbers surged past 50 lakh. The 66-hour free travel 'Samman Ka Tohfa' offered by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during Raksha Bandhan started at 6 am on August 8. On August 8, 19.5 lakh passengers availed the free service, while 31.7 lakh passengers travelled on August 9, suggesting a spike of 210 per cent than the normal. By 12.50 pm on August 10, 13 lakh passengers had already travelled, and by midnight, this number is estimated to reach 25 lakh. At major bus stations like Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Meerut, Bareilly, Lucknow, Saharanpur, Agra, Aligarh, Kanpur, and Etawah, special duty staff were deployed due to the large number of passengers. He also said that an incentive scheme for drivers and conductors has been implemented. Meanwhile, lakhs of women in the state who benefited from this facility thanked Chief Minister Adityanath for this 'gift'.
