A clutch of Las Leonas - Ealing Trailfinders prop Cristina Blanco, Sale Sharks back row Alba Capell and Harlequins back Claudia Pena - compete in the PWR. Fly-half Amalia Argudo is a key part of the Toulouse side that reached the Elite 1 final in France earlier this year. But collectively, they will lack the quality and depth to offer significant resistance to the queenpins of the women's game. Instead the competition for the Red Roses will mainly be internal. The 2024-25 English domestic season was condensed, with the final taking place three months earlier than usual, to maximise the Red Roses' preparation for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup. As such, this warm-up against Spain marks two months since their first training camp. During that time they have been to the heat of Treviso and plumbed the depths of their stamina to find an extra edge. Over the rest of the world, but also over each other. The meeting with Spain gives players on the fringe of the 32-strong squad a chance to push towards the centre of Mitchell's planning. Maddie Feaunati is in a potential tussle with Alex Matthews for the first-choice number eight shirt, while Marlie Packer and Abi Burton - at opposite ends of their Test careers - will be directly compared to Sadia Kabeya, who is poised on the bench. Zoe Harrison, in competition with Holly Aitchison, has a chance to cement her spot at 10. Lucy Packer, England's starting nine in their World Cup final defeat by New Zealand three years ago, is trying to unseat Natasha Hunt. In the front-row, there is Springbok-style strength in depth, with hooker May Campbell, joint-top try scorer in the PWR last season, Hannah Botterman and Maud Muir as the back-up to Kelsey Clifford, Lark Atkin-Davies and Sarah Bern. There is intrigue on the wing as Jess Breach attempts to edge ahead of Claudia Moloney-McDonald and Helena Rowland, a sublimely skilled footballer still searching for a secure backline spot, and try her hand out wide. Centre Jade Shekells will attempt to barge into the midfield equation as she wins her third cap. Emma Sing has been excellent for Gloucester-Hartpury, but has the hardest task of all, keeping World Player of the Year Ellie Kildunne's full-back spot warm. And in the background, for all of them, is the clock. The canapes and tickertape have barely been cleared away from football's celebrations, but a baton has been passed. England will play France next weekend in their final warm-up and then the rehearsals are over. A Rugby World Cup opener against the United States awaits on 22 August. Marlie Packer, who captains the side against Spain, is setting her sights high. She has won the World Cup before. Back in 2014, England's women footballers, preparing for a qualifier against Wales, came off the training pitch and sat down to cheer Packer and her team-mates - all amateurs - to a final win over Canada. This time though a Red Roses victory, on home turf, as professionals, at a sold-out Allianz Stadium, would be many magnitudes bigger. "It is our turn now, let's go and do it," said Packer. "Like how the footballers have inspired us, we want to inspire them and the nation. "We can define the way women's rugby is looked at by the way we play and how we want to be." Spain is where England iron out the small details needed to realise that big ambition.

Oklahoma State duo Ethan Fang, Preston Stout named to U.S. Walker Cup team at Cypress Point
It's a good summer to be an Oklahoma State Cowboy. Ethan Fang, 20, and Preston Stout, 21, were named members of the 2025 United States Walker Cup team, it was announced Friday. The duo, both rising juniors at OSU, join Jackson Koivun, Ben James and Michael La Sasso on what will be a 10-man roster, leaving five spots open with three weeks remaining in the selection period. The roster will be fully announced at the conclusion of the 2025 U.S. Amateur at Olympic Club in San Francisco. 'Ethan and Preston are excellent additions to further solidify this year's team,' captain Nathan Smith said in a release. 'These two players have worked tirelessly to put themselves in a position to be selected to this team and I'm thrilled to see their hard work rewarded. I look forward to having them on our side at Cypress Point.' Last month, Fang captured the 130th Amateur Championship at Royal St. George's in England, becoming the first American in 18 years to win. He also went 2-1 for OSU in match play, helping the Cowboys win their 12th national title in school history in May at Omni La Costa. Stout also went 2-1 in match play at the NCAA Championship, and he also captured the title at the 2025 Northeast Amateur last month at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rhode Island. He's also a back-to-back Big 12 Conference individual champion. The USGA's International Team Selection working group could name additional players to the Walker Cup team before the U.S. Amateur. The winner of the U.S. Amateur and the recipient of the 2025 McCormack Medal, if they're American, will earn automatic spots on the Walker Cup Match is a 10-man amateur team competition between the USA and Great Britain and Ireland. Cypress Point Club previously hosted the 1981 Walker Cup, when the USA defeated GB&I, 15-9, led by Corey Pavin, Jay Sigel and Hal Sutton. The 50th Walker Cup is set for Sept. 6-7. Federico Chiesa could make Premier League transfer as two new options emerge
Federico Chiesa could end up staying in the Premier League beyond the closure of the transfer window — but not with Liverpool. That's because Fulham is being linked with a move to sign the Italy international, who looks set to leave Anfield after just one season with the club. Chiesa started just twice across the Premier League and Champions League across the course of the 2024-25 season, and both of the games he lined up in were effective dead rubbers. Italian oulet La Repubblica reports that Fulham is interested in possibly taking Chiesa on loan, while Celtic is also considering a loan swoop for the 27-year-old. Just hours prior to Liverpool's flight to Hong Kong last month, the Italy international scored in the Reds' 5-0 behind-closed-doors victory over Stoke City at the AXA Training Center. Given his difficult first season in England, Chiesa's omission has prompted more questions than answers. Speaking in an interview with Italian media in June, Chiesa revealed that a decision would soon be taken over his future. 'The year is over. But it's an experience I would do again,' Chiesa said. 'Soon I will sit down at the table with the club, Fali (Ramadani, his agent) and my family to find the best solution. I wouldn't mind staying in Liverpool at all. 'In the first few months there was no shortage of difficulties, if you think that I arrived in Liverpool on 26 August and found myself catapulted to another planet. "With other teammates, without having trained with them, but with a coach, zero friendlies, nothing… And, if you remember, in the autumn Liverpool were three times as good as the others, a crazy intensity.' Atalanta has been linked with Chiesa, amid the prospect of Ademola Lookman joining Inter Milan, while Napoli manager Antonio Conte is also a fan of the out-of-favor Reds forward. Chiesa's Liverpool salary is likely to be an obstacle for most suitors in Italy, and if the player is not willing to take a pay cut in order to secure a return to Italy, the Reds may have to subsidize his salary to get him out of Anfield.
