Charity rowers back after Atlantic record attempt

Yahoo4 days ago
A rower has said it is "absolutely incredible" to be back on land after returning from a world-record attempt across the Atlantic Ocean.
Jack Jarvis, from Hamble in Hampshire, and his team, United We Conquer, made of rowers David Bruce, Sam Edwards and Adam Radcliffe, returned to Hampshire earlier, after a 3,500-mile (5,630 km) journey from New York.
Their challenge has raised £100,000 for Head Up, a mental health charity for the UK armed forces community.
Jarvis is hoping for confirmation the team has beaten the official record for distance rowed in 24 hours, which is currently 116.76 nautical miles (134.37 miles /216.24 km).
He said: "After living off five hours sleep a day, rowing 12 hours, dehydrated, hungry, to be back on land, seeing all my friends and family is absolutely incredible."
Jarvis already holds the world record for being the first person to row single-handed across the Atlantic from mainland Europe to mainland North America non-stop, which he achieved in 111 days, 12 hours and 22 minutes.
The team aimed to break the 43-day world record for the North Atlantic route.
He said the journey had posed some risks.
"We had a capsize, we had an electrical fire, so pretty much everything that could go wrong, went wrong," Jarvis said.
"But I have a strong team and we were able to finish, you know, we were able to finish what we started."
The rowers were met by a crowd of supporters at Hamble, including Jarvis's mother, Debs Rolfe.
He described it as a "real amazing turnout" and said "a massive thank you to my hometown Hamble and everyone that's come down from further afield".

Bell's homer, Henry's clutch relief help Nationals beat Mets 5-4

Josh Bell homered and drove in two runs, rookie reliever Cole Henry pitched out of a jam in the sixth inning and the Washington Nationals held on to beat the Mets 5-4 on Wednesday night, ending New York's three-game winning streak. Bell's 16th homer was a 420-foot line drive to the right-field stands in the fifth against the struggling Kodai Senga (7-5), who allowed five funs (four earned) in five-plus innings. New York's Brett Baty hit his 15th homer, a 455-foot rocket in the fifth. Nationals right fielder Dylan Crews stood still as the ball flew into the second deck. Rookie Brad Lord (4-6) pitched five sharp innings for the Nationals before losing his command in the sixth. He walked the first two batters, then gave up back-to-back one-out doubles to Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil that got the Mets within 5-4. Henry came in and worked around a throwing error by third baseman Paul DeJong, retiring Cedric Mullins on a popup and Luis Torrens on a grounder to strand the bases loaded. Shinnosuke Ogasawara pitched a perfect seventh, Clayton Beeter did the same in the eighth and Jose A. Ferrer worked the ninth for his third save. Nationals interim manager Miguel Cairo was ejected by plate umpire Todd Tichenor in the top of the sixth. Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo exited in the second inning with a stiff neck. The Nationals loaded the bases in the third on two walks and a catcher's interference. Their first hit of the night was an RBI infield single by CJ Abrams, and Bell followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Senga has allowed 18 earned runs over 27 innings in his past six starts for a 6.00 ERA. In a matchup of lefties, Sean Manaea (1-1, 4.78 ERA) starts for the Mets against the Nationals' MacKenzie Gore (5-12, 4.04) as the series concludes on Thursday.

Swiatek and Ruud meet defending champs Errani and Vavassori in US Open mixed doubles final

NEW YORK (AP) — Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud will play defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori on Wednesday night for the U.S. Open mixed doubles title and $1 million. Swiatek and Ruud, the No. 3 seeds, beat top-seeded Jessica Pegula 3-5, 5-3, 10-8 in a match tiebreaker in the first semifinal, in what was probably the best match of an event that was overhauled this year. They trailed 8-4 in the tiebreaker after Swiatek double-faulted, then ran off six straight points to advance. Errani and Vavassori then beat Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison 4-2, 4-2. After a short break, the finalists would be back on the court to wrap up an event that was completed over two days, well before singles play starts Sunday. Both teams won two matches Tuesday to earn spots in the semifinals that were played under a closed roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium after rain fell much of the afternoon. Errani and Vavassori weren't even sure they would get to defend their titles after the U.S. Tennis Association radically changed the mixed doubles tournament in an effort to draw top singles players. Eight teams in the 16-team field qualified by their players' combined singles rankings, with the remaining teams given wild cards. The Italians — were were among the biggest critics of the changed format — were given one and have a chance to be the first repeat champions in Flushing Meadows since Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray in 2018-19. 'I think we are on a mission,' Vavassori said. The final will more closely resemble a traditional match, with sets to six games. They went to four games in the first three rounds, with a deciding point played at deuce instead of needing to get the next two points. ___ More AP tennis:

Newcastle host Liverpool amid Isak stand-off, Spurs test new-look Man City

Liverpool can expect a hostile reception when they travel to Newcastle on Monday amid their pursuit of wantaway Magpies striker Alexander Isak, while Manchester City and Tottenham face off in an early examination of their ambitions for the season. Across Merseyside, a new era begins for Everton on Sunday when they welcome Brighton for the first competitive game at their new 53,000-capacity stadium. AFP Sport looks at the major talking points ahead of the second weekend of the Premier League season: Isak future hangs over Newcastle, Liverpool Isak is set to sit out the meeting between his current employers and his preferred destination as a stand-off over the Swede's future rolls into the final week of the transfer window. Newcastle insist the 25-year-old will not move unless they can source an adequate replacement and Liverpool meet their British transfer record price tag of a reported £150 million ($202 million). Liverpool have had one bid worth £110 million rejected with their business not yet concluded despite splashing £300 million on new recruits. Isak broke his silence on Tuesday, saying his relationship with Newcastle "can't continue" after losing trust in the club. However, the early season form of Hugo Ekitike has tempered the need for Premier League champions Liverpool to meet Newcastle's demands. The French forward, who rejected Newcastle's advances to join the Reds, registered a goal and an assist on his Premier League debut in Liverpool's rollercoaster 4-2 win over Bournemouth. The teething problems for Arne Slot's new-look side have been in stopping the flow of counter-attacks against them, but Liverpool should be stronger for the return of midfielder Ryan Gravenberch from suspension at St James' Park. Newcastle's lack of firepower without Isak was exposed as they failed to break down 10-man Aston Villa in a goalless draw on the opening weekend. It has been another frustrating week for Eddie Howe in the transfer market as his attempts to land Brentford striker Yoane Wissa have stalled. Spurs a reminder of Man City demons City's 4-0 demolition of Wolves on the opening weekend sent a strong message of intent after a season to forget. The visit of Spurs is a painful reminder of City's fall from grace last season as Tottenham ran riot with a 4-0 victory at the Etihad in November, in the midst of a run of one win in 13 games for Pep Guardiola's men. Guardiola said his squad has been infused with "fresh energy" after new signings Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri impressed at Molineux. But a tougher test lies in wait against City's bogey team of recent years. Spurs have lost only one of their last four league visits to the Etihad and scored at least twice on every occasion. New boss Thomas Frank has already shown his ability to adapt in very nearly masterminding a UEFA Super Cup victory over European champions Paris Saint-Germain before a late collapse. Tottenham's Premier League campaign also got off to a flier with a 3-0 win over Burnley. Everton's new era Everton's new season got off to a frustrating start in a late 1-0 defeat by Leeds. But the hope of a bright future is the club's new state-of-the-art home on Liverpool's docklands. After decades in the doldrums for one of England's historically most successful clubs, Everton are banking on the Hill Dickinson Stadium to help bankroll a change in fortunes. But the move from Goodison Park, which had been home of the Toffees since 1892, is also fraught with risk. Goodison's intimidating atmosphere played a big role in helping save Everton from the drop in a series of difficult seasons in recent years. On the evidence of Monday's defeat, the Blues need their new home to be just as much of a fortress to avoid another relegation scrap. Fixtures (all times GMT) Friday West Ham v Chelsea (1900) Saturday Manchester City v Tottenham (1130), Bournemouth v Wolves, Brentford v Aston Villa, Burnley v Sunderland (all 1400), Arsenal v Leeds (1630) Sunday Everton v Brighton, Crystal Palace v Nottingham Forest (both 1300), Fulham v Manchester United (1530) Monday Newcastle v Liverpool (1900) kca/jdg/mw
