Cristiano Ronaldo leads Portugal to Nations League final with 2-1 win over Germany

The Hindua day ago

Cristiano Ronaldo scored again as Portugal came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 in their Nations League semifinal.
The 40-year-old Ronaldo captained Portugal and scored his 137th international goal five minutes after substitute Francisco Conceição equalised with a blistering shot in the 63rd on Wednesday (June 4, 2025).
Ronaldo became the oldest player to ever score against Germany while ending his "curse" against the country. The former Real Madrid star lost each of the previous five games he'd played against Germany.
Liverpool target Florian Wirtz had given the home team a 48th-minute lead with a perfectly placed header inside the right post, but Portugal coach Roberto Martínez made his changes count as he brought on Conceição and Champions League winner Vitinha among the substitutes.
Vitinha excelled as Portugal finished the game in the ascendancy, just four days after he helped Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League final against Inter Milan in the same stadium on Saturday (May 30, 2025).
Germany needed goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen at his best to prevent the visitors from scoring any more.
PSG wing backs João Neves and Nuno Mendes both started for Portugal, while Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade started for his Germany debut.
Conceição only needed five minutes to make a mark with a brilliant long-range strike inside the far post after he surged past Robin Gosens like he wasn't there. Mendes gave Ronaldo a simple finish five minutes after that.
"It could have been more," Mendes said.
France plays Spain in Stuttgart on Thursday (June 5, 2025) in the other semifinal.

Lamine Yamal's sly dig at Dembele after Spain win: Best to talk on the pitch

Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal continues to let his football do the talking — and this time, the message was loud and clear. After powering Spain to a dramatic 5-4 win over France in the UEFA Nations League semi-final on June 6, the 17-year-old wonderkid appeared to take a cheeky swipe at fellow Ballon d'Or contender Ousmane who has become one of the frontrunners for the prestigious Ballon d'Or after a staggering 2024-25 campaign with FC Barcelona, bagged a brace in the high-octane clash and made his point — both on and off the pitch. While he had already stirred up anticipation ahead of the semi-final with bold pre-match comments, it was his post-match reflection that grabbed headlines. Without naming names, Yamal made it clear that he believes the pitch is the only place that really matters — a likely nod to Dembl's recent rise with PSG."I always say the same thing to mum, that I try to give my all. That is what motivates me and what gets me up in the morning. It is why I play football. It's always best to speak on the pitch. Dembele's a great player, we saw that in the Champions League, but I am happy that we're the ones in the final," he told RTVE after the Spain-France semi-final was more than just a Nations League fixture — it was a head-to-head between two of the season's most decorated attackers. Yamal, fresh off a treble-winning campaign with Barcelona — having clinched La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de Espana — also added Euro 2024 glory to his name with La Roja. On the other hand, Dembl had his own statement season, playing a starring role in Paris Saint-Germain's historic quadruple, which included their first-ever UEFA Champions League title, a dominant 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the final, as well as Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and the Trophe des Champions. Statistically, Dembl might hold the club edge — finishing with 33 goals and 15 assists in 49 matches — while Yamal posted 18 goals and 25 assists across 55 appearances. But Yamal's national team success and his impact in the Nations League semi-final may just have tilted the Ballon d'Or narrative slightly in his Spain's win, Yamal has booked a blockbuster final against Portugal — a showdown that pits the rising star against football royalty in Cristiano Ronaldo. France, despite mounting a spirited comeback from 0-4 down by the 55th minute, couldn't find the the Ballon d'Or ceremony approaches on September 22, and with nominations set to roll out in early August, the stage is set for a thrilling final chapter.

Lamine Yamal ‘motivated' by Cristiano Ronaldo challenge in Nations League final: ‘I want to play to prove who I am'

In footballing terms, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal are generations apart. One is at the back end of a historic and long, legendary career, while the other stands just beyond the starting line of his own that promises to be just as great. But when Portugal and Spain meet in an all-Iberian UEFA Nations League Final at the Allianz Arena in Munich, these two chapters of football will share a pitch, for the first and likely one of the only times. Ahead of that big contest between these two in-form teams in Germany, Lamine Yamal spoke about the prospect of facing a football legend in Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time in his career. However, despite being only 17 years old, Lamine did not look overawed by the prospect. 'Clearly he is a legend of football, and we all respect him a lot,' said the FC Barcelona superstar. 'However, I have to do my job, which is winning, and that is that.' Lamine isn't one who shies away from the big stage, having led Spain to lifting the Euros in 2024, and Barcelona to a La Liga title this year. He had another ridiculously good performance in the Nations League semifinal against France, scoring twice, including a brilliant second goal. Ronaldo, however, is a man who knows all about scoring at this stage, despite his ageing legs. Ronaldo scored Portugal's opener against Germany, and continues to be their captain and talisman. Lamine pointed out that the sub-story of him and Ronaldo is secondary to what this match is, which is a chance to add silverware for both of these teams, in a European international final. Spain are defending champions, having lifted this title in 2023, while Portugal were the inaugural champions in 2019. 'Of course, it is a special game, a final against a great team. That gives me extra motivation. These are the kind of games I want to play to prove who I am,' said a level-headed but competitive Lamine, who is seeking even more silverware this season after his successes with club and country alike. Spain and Portugal's battle to see who wins their second Nations League title could very well come down to which of their cross-generational superstars can turn up the most — the experience and the title-winning pedigree of Ronaldo or the immeasurable promise and spark of Lamine?
