Cristiano Ronaldo leads Portugal to Nations League final with 2-1 win over Germany

The Hindu05-06-2025
Cristiano Ronaldo scored again as Portugal came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 in their Nations League semifinal.
The 40-year-old Ronaldo captained Portugal and scored his 137th international goal five minutes after substitute Francisco Conceição equalised with a blistering shot in the 63rd on Wednesday (June 4, 2025).
Ronaldo became the oldest player to ever score against Germany while ending his "curse" against the country. The former Real Madrid star lost each of the previous five games he'd played against Germany.
Liverpool target Florian Wirtz had given the home team a 48th-minute lead with a perfectly placed header inside the right post, but Portugal coach Roberto Martínez made his changes count as he brought on Conceição and Champions League winner Vitinha among the substitutes.
Vitinha excelled as Portugal finished the game in the ascendancy, just four days after he helped Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League final against Inter Milan in the same stadium on Saturday (May 30, 2025).
Germany needed goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen at his best to prevent the visitors from scoring any more.
PSG wing backs João Neves and Nuno Mendes both started for Portugal, while Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade started for his Germany debut.
Conceição only needed five minutes to make a mark with a brilliant long-range strike inside the far post after he surged past Robin Gosens like he wasn't there. Mendes gave Ronaldo a simple finish five minutes after that.
"It could have been more," Mendes said.
France plays Spain in Stuttgart on Thursday (June 5, 2025) in the other semifinal.

Ex-Premier League referee David Coote banned for 8 weeks over Klopp rant

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been handed an eight-week suspension and directed to complete a face-to-face education programme after making offensive remarks about ex-Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp in a private video that was later widely shared on social media. The incident, which led to his dismissal, was reviewed by an independent regulatory commission that announced the disciplinary action on Tuesday. Coote accepted the Football Association's charge of misconduct for using abusive and insulting language in a video reportedly recorded around July 2020. The footage, believed to have been taken via a mobile phone, showed Coote sharing personal opinions about Liverpool FC and Klopp in a conversation with an unidentified individual. Coote faces consequences for his comments In the video, Coote referred to Liverpool with an expletive and used a derogatory term to describe Klopp, calling the German manager 'arrogant' and accusing him of previously alleging that Coote had lied during a post-match exchange. The FA deemed the remarks an "aggravated breach" of its rules, citing the inclusion of references, explicit or implied, to nationality. Coote was initially suspended, and after a formal investigation, he was terminated from his position in December by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), who stated his continued role was 'untenable.' In addition to this case, Coote had previously faced scrutiny following a report by The Sun, which claimed he discussed issuing a yellow card with a fan during a match. Coote denied the allegations, and the FA confirmed in June that no charges would be filed regarding that incident. Meanwhile, UEFA has also opened an inquiry into Coote after a separate video, again published by The Sun, allegedly showed him using cocaine during this year's European Championship.

Jack Grealish Joins Everton In Season-Long Loan Deal From Manchester City

Last Updated: Grealish has chosen the number 18 shirt at Everton in tribute to Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne, who wore it during their time with the club. Manchester City winger Jack Grealish joined Everton on loan for the 2025-26 season on Tuesday in a bid to revive his troubled career. Grealish fell out of favour with City boss Pep Guardiola last season and made just seven starts in the Premier League. The 29-year-old was left out of City's squad for the Club World Cup in the United States, clearly indicating that he was no longer wanted by Guardiola. Everton's deal for Grealish, who earns a reported £300,000 ($402,000) per week, comes just before the new Premier League campaign starts for the Toffees at Leeds on August 18. 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton – it's massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans," Grealish said. Grealish has chosen the number 18 shirt at Everton in tribute to Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne, who wore it during their time with the club. 'My two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here," he said. 'I spoke to Wayne before I came here and I mentioned that to him – about the number 18 – so I hope he's happy as well." Grealish joined City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a then British record fee of £100 million. The England international has won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the FA Cup with City, but his form had dipped significantly since he played a key role in the 2022-23 treble-winning campaign. He was left out of England's Euro 2024 squad, an omission that left him 'heartbroken". Guardiola rarely picked Grealish last season despite City's struggles, and he was left on the bench for the shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace. Amid concerns about his personal life after repeated reports of alcohol-fuelled late nights, Grealish will have a chance to revive his spluttering career at Everton and potentially earn a recall to the England squad ahead of next year's World Cup. 'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go," Grealish said. 'On social media, I've been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there's that side of it as well and that's another reason why I chose Everton. 'I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I've had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I'm sure I will." Everton recently left Goodison Park to move into their new Hill Dickinson stadium ahead of the season, with Grealish set to take centre stage in the plush arena. He ranks as Everton's biggest signing since the end of last season after a quiet summer in the transfer market for boss David Moyes. 'We welcome Jack to Everton and we're very pleased to have him on board," Moyes said. 'I think we're getting him at a good time because he's experienced, he understands the Premier League and we're all fully aware of the levels he's capable of performing to. 'I know Jack's ambition is to get back into the England squad, so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season."
