K-DISC pitches tech and innovation to help neurodivergent people
As part of the programme designed by the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC), STRIDE Innovation Centres will be set up at engineering colleges under APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) and other universities. Another feature will be the setting up of a first-of-its-kind Makerspaces at select BUDS schools operated by Kudumbashree and the local self-government department (LSGD).
'The plan is to create India's first inclusive innovation ecosystem, and specifically, assistive/adaptive technology in 2026,' Robin Tommy, executive director of K-DISC's Social Enterprises and Inclusion (SEI), tells TNIE.
'The project aims to make Kerala a hub for social innovation, with a strong emphasis on community-driven solutions.'
Launched in November 2024 on an experimental basis, the project will have four arms -- STRIDE Innovation Centres, STRIDE Makerspaces, STRIDE Hub, and STRIDE Network.
'The initiative envisions to make these neurodivergent individuals self-sufficient. They don't need our empathy or sympathy. What they need is a way to earn a livelihood once they turn 18. They need hand-holding,' he says.
Explaining more about STRIDE, Robin says, 'At the innovation centres, the students will be encouraged to come up with designs that help improve the lives of their special needs brethren.' He stresses the innovation happening at these centres will be human-centric. K-DISC had conducted a Designathon, where more than 300 teams from colleges across the country presented their ideas. These ideas were arrived at through interactions with the differently abled persons, he says.

Four IIT-Kanpur profs to impart AI training to Uttar Pradesh MLAs, schedule worked out
Professors from the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) will conduct classes over two days for members of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly in order to introduce them to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential use in governance. The workshop will feature hands-on demonstrations, as well as examples of software solutions developed at IIT-Kanpur, to showcase indigenous efforts in AI. (PICTURE FOR REPRESENTATION) In its July 17 edition, HT was the first to report ('AI to help UP MLAs with digitisation of files, reports') that the upcoming monsoon session of the UP assembly will see a special IIT-Kanpur designed class on artificial intelligence for legislators, aimed at motivating them to use technology for various legislative works. Now, the details of the training schedule have emerged. The sessions will be held on the assembly premises and they will involve four faculty members from IIT-K's department of computer science and engineering. The programme aims to familiarise legislators with AI tools, their practical applications, and the ethical and technical nuances involved in their use. Prof Nitin Saxena, who is leading the initiative, said the workshop will cover a range of tools, including ChatGPT, and show how public representatives can deploy them in their day-to-day responsibilities such as drafting official notes, organising surveys, conducting constituency research and enhancing public communication. 'One of the key aspects of the training is to inform legislators that not everything generated by AI tools is accurate,' Prof Saxena said. 'Equally important is knowing how to spot such errors and exercise human judgment when using platforms like ChatGPT.' Through Saxena and his team, legislators will also be introduced to a curated list of AI tools that can support governance, improve transparency, and make decision-making more data-driven — a skill set increasingly relevant in public administration. The workshop will feature hands-on demonstrations, as well as examples of software solutions developed at IIT-Kanpur, to showcase indigenous efforts in AI. Following the initial session, MLAs interested in delving deeper into the subject will be invited to the institute for further training. Prof Saxena added that the material being shared is already available in the public domain. 'The idea is to make this knowledge accessible and actionable in legislative contexts. We will also touch upon the economics of AI and its emerging role across governance.' The state government's initiative has drawn appreciation for attempting to bridge the technological literacy gap in politics at a time when AI is reshaping policy-making across the world. The schedule for the sessions has already been finalised, with professors set to begin instruction in the coming weeks.

Kairali Chip lacks patent, proof or use case: SUCC
T'puram: Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology (DUK) is back in the news for the wrong reasons. This time, many are questioning the scientific basis and credibility of its claim that it developed a semiconductor chip (Kairali Chip or K-Chip) billed as the first-of-its-kind in the country. Governor R V Arlekar has already asked the state police to probe the alleged financial irregularities at DUK. He acted on a report from former vice-chancellor (in-charge) Ciza Thomas and also recommended a CAG audit at the university. However, CM Pinarayi Vijayan, who serves as DUK's pro-chancellor, dismissed the allegations raised by opposition leader VD Satheesan about the university's functioning. Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) questioned the truth behind the chip development claim. After DUK announced the chip project, IT department gave Rs 25 lakh to Prof Alex P James who claimed he led the research and development. "It is important to note that the so-called 'K-Chip' is not an industrially-viable product. It was only a design entry submitted on a global online platform (supported by Google) meant for education and research training. Thousands of students and researchers across the world use this platform to submit similar designs for skill-building," said SUCC in a memorandum to Arlekar. The claim that Kerala developed a full-fledged chip through this process is misleading. Presenting an academic-level design as a fully developed indigenous semiconductor chip is at best a serious exaggeration and at worst a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and policy-makers, it added. Despite the hype around the so-called 'K-Chip', DUK lacks even the basic infrastructure needed for full semiconductor design, testing or production. No official validation reports, peer-reviewed papers, deployment records or actual real-world uses exist in connection with this chip. Its design has not been patented or shared in any credible scientific forum and there is no proof of any commercial value. Without clear technical backing, calling this India's 'first indigenous chip' was both premature and misleading, SUCC said in the memorandum. "Kerala govt and DUK's reluctance to provide an official explanation or documentation regarding K-Chip even when the Centre is actively investing in chip-making, raises concerns," it added. The memorandum also questioned the academic background of James and claimed that project funds worth crores given to DUK were going to private firms registered in his name allegedly with support from key people in the CMO.
