New Year's Eve murder case: SPP says he has not been paid dues
Special public prosecutor Pradip Gharat Tuesday informed a court here, before which the trial in the New Year's Eve murder case of a 19-year-old is ongoing, that he has not been paid his dues.
Gharat told the court during a hearing in the case that he has been appointed as the special public prosecutor (SPP) since 2021 but has not been paid even for a single hearing so far.
He told the court that he had written thrice to the Khar Police senior inspector, and sent the officer messages about his dues but did not get any response.
The court has directed that the pursis filed by Gharat informing it about the non-payment be forwarded to the Khar Police.
Gharat informed the court that he has given the authorities 'sufficient time' to respond and if they fail to do so by the next hearing on June 16, he has no option but to step down from the case.
On the intervening night of December 31, 2020 and January 1, 2021, Jhanvi Kukreja, a 19-year-old Khar resident, was allegedly murdered after a scuffle. The police arrested Kukreja's childhood friend, 19-year-old Diya Padalkar and 22-year-old Shree Jogdhankar, on charges of murder. Gharat was appointed as the SPP in 2021 and the trial in the case has been underway since 2023.
On Tuesday, Gharat examined the 41st witness in the case.
Following the examination, he informed the court that while he had conducted the trial which is almost at its fag end now with 3-4 witnesses remaining, he has not been paid his pending dues.
Gharat told the court that if he does not receive any response, he will not be able to attend the next hearing.
Gharat, who was the SPP in the Telgi scam, and is representing the CBI in the cases against gangster Chhota Rajan, including the murder of journalist J Dey where Rajan and others were sentenced to life imprisonment, was replaced earlier this year from case of the abetment of suicide of Dr Payal Tadvi.
On March 7, the law and judiciary department issued the notification to cancel the appointment of Gharat with immediate effect and appointed another lawyer as the SPP.
Appointed in many cases during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, Gharat was also asked to step down in some cases of a political nature like the sedition case against former MP Navneet Rana.

BJP worker murder case: SC allows Karntaka Congress MLA Kulkarni to place additional documents
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday granted a day's time to Congress' Karnataka MLA and former Minister Vinay Kulkarni to place on record additional documents against the state government's plea for cancellation of his bail in connection with the murder of BJP worker Yogesh Gowda over allegations of witness-tampering. A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma turned down the request of Kulkarni's counsel to adjourn the hearing till next week for bringing certain documents which were filed before the trial court. After much persuasion, the Justice Karol-led Bench adjourned the hearing till Friday, and in the meantime, asked Kulkarni's lawyer to bring on record the additional documents. "It shall be open for the respondent (Vinay Kulkarni) to place on record any document either during the course of the day or hand over the same during the course of the hearing tomorrow," ordered the apex court. Earlier on Wednesday, the Justice Karol-led Bench restrained the trial court from examining any witnesses till further orders, and listed the matter for hearing on June 5. Kulkarni, presently the Chairman of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board, was accused of conspiring in the murder of BJP Zilla Panchayat member Yogesh Gowda in 2016. He was then a cabinet minister in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government. Though his name came up, no action was initiated against him. The BJP made it an issue, and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa vowed at election rallies that he would send Kulkarni to jail if the BJP was voted to power. Later, the case was handed over to the CBI, and Kulkarni was arrested. He spent more than 9 months in jail and finally obtained bail from the Supreme Court. Last year, the Karnataka High Court had directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to complete the inquiry and questioning of witnesses in the case swiftly. Kulkarni, who is deemed close to Siddaramaiah, was elected from the Dharwad Assembly seat in the 2023 state polls, despite the court banning his entry into the constituency, and his wife and daughter campaigning on his behalf.

Chess Great Hails Prime Minister Narendra Modi After D Gukesh's Win Over Magnus Carlsen: "Leaders Who..."
Legendary chess player Susan Polgar has recalled the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote to her on the eve of Republic Day in 2022 for playing an important role in the formative years of young Indian chess players. PM Modi recently congratulated world champion D Gukesh for his first-ever classical chess victory against world no. 1 Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 of Norway Chess 2025. The Hungarian great has also praised the Prime Minister for his interest in chess and supporting his country's players. "A few years ago, I received this from Prime Minister Modi for my work with Indian students and support for Indian players. His office contacted me directly for my address so they can express his letter. I did not ask for it but appreciated his gesture. It is nice that he (even through his assistants) supports and encourages Indian chess players and athletes in other sports," she posted on X with a copy of a letter she had received from PM Modi in 2022. "Are there leaders of nations who tweet about their chess players? I only know of one other, Javier Milei, tweeting about Faustino Oro," Susan's post read. This was also the strength of Carlsen for years. Mark of champions!" Following his win over Carlsen, Gukesh scored his first-ever classical win over compatriot Arjun Erigaisi — and did so from a position that seemed all but lost — in a dramatic round seven encounter at the Norway Chess tournament on Monday. Later, in the eighth round, Hikaru Nakamura halted Gukesh's surge by beating the world champion in the classical format, breaking a five-game winless streak and throwing the leaderboard wide open. With this win, Nakamura joined Gukesh at 11.5 points, putting both players in a tie for third place as the tournament approaches its climax. For Gukesh, the loss is a minor setback in what has otherwise been a breakout tournament.

"It isn't just the loss of a young man — it was the loss of someone who was known for his gentle nature, friendly demeanour, and the ability to connect with everyone he met. He just got married," an elderly neighbour said through tears. "He used to participate in every local event in the evenings. How can this tragedy be true?". As reported by TOI. Live Events What happened to Raghuvanshi and his wife The body of Indore based transporter Raja Raghuvanshi (29) was found in a deep gorge near a waterfall in Sohra area (also known as Cherrapunji ) of the East Khasi Hills district on Monday, while a search for his wife Sonam , is underway. Raja, who went missing with his wife Sonam on May 23 after leaving a homestay in Nongriat village, was found dead on June 2, some 20 km from where they were last seen, Meghalaya officials confirmed to PTI The couple had arrived in Mawlakhiyat on May 22, parked their rented scooter, and descended over 3,000 steps to visit the famed living root bridges. Their abandoned scooter was found outside a café on May 24, prompting a search operation hindered by heavy rains, officials said to PTI. Raja's friends and family were hoping that the reason why he and his wife couldn't be contacted was because of network issues. After the discovery of his body that theory has been laid to rest while the search for his wife continues. Police have recovered a bloodstained machete believed to have been used in Raja's killing. The search for Sonam continues. Raja's brother suspects a robbery motive in the case Raja's elder brother Sachin Raghuvanshi told PTI, 'We want a CBI inquiry as soon as possible into my brother's murder and daughter-in-law Sonam's disappearance. Otherwise, we will have to stage a sit-in protest.' He also said, 'Along with my brother's wallet, the gold chain and ring he was wearing when he went to Meghalaya for his honeymoon are also missing.'
