Hip-Hop Anniversary: 45 Songs For You Ultimate Southern Rap Playlist
Source: Frank Micelotta Archive / Getty The famous saying 'The south has something to say' by André 3000 at the 1995 Source Awards, while OutKast accepted the New Artist Of The Year Award over a chorus of boos from a less than happy audience, has become something of a mantra for southern rappers and those who love it. Related: Happy Birthday Hip-Hop: No. 1 Rap Songs by Year Since 1989 It is hard to imagine a world where a powerful hip-hop duo would be met with such disdain from any self-proclaimed hip-hop head. To understand the famous statement is to also understand the roots of how in the early years of hip-hop, its newness wasn't quite accepted yet. The subgenre of Southern rap was completely ostracized as a whole. The Southern hip-hop sound had just been born around the late 1980s, during a time when rappers of the East and West Coast dominated. By the mid-1990s, Atlanta had become a hub for the Southern rap scene, and by the early 2000s, artists in the South began to develop mainstream popularity. Despite its popularity in recent years in the genre, southern rap is hardly recognized during celebrations of Hip-Hop. Though several artists of today are dominating the rap scene, like Megan Thee Stallion, Big K.R.I.T., GloRilla, BigXthePlug, Doechii, just to name a few, rappers in the dirty south still don't get the credit that they deserve. But, as 3 Stacks said with a fire in his belly during a pivotal moment in OutKast's career, the south will and still has something to say. For Hip-Hop's 52nd anniversary today, we have compiled an ultimate Southern rap playlist. Because, despite the erasure of the Dirty South in Hip-Hop celebrations, the South will always be a staple in the past, present and future of hip-hop. It's Finally Time for the Arrival of ‘Alien: Earth'
In space, no one can hear you stream. Alien: Earth, the first-ever television series in the Alien franchise, will make landfall on FX and Hulu starting August 12. Emerging from the mind of television producer and author Noah Hawley, Alien: Earth is primed to end the lackluster summer TV season on a high note. Set two years prior to the events of the 1979 classic Alien, Alien: Earth follows a special young woman, a "hybrid" synthetic named Wendy (Sydney Chandler) who leads a group of other synthetics to the crash site of the spaceship Maginot. There, in the middle of densely populated Southeast Asia, Wendy and her corporate overlords discover a terrifying threat to all living things on Earth. In Esquire's review by Josh Rosenberg, Alien: Earth is "thrilling" and "surprisingly gruesome for TV" while still remaining an intelligent thriller that speculates humanity's relationship to the scientific unknown. Writes Rosenberg: "Alien: Earth may share much of its DNA with Jurassic Park and Westworld, but there's much more material to chew on than whether characters survive. Much like creating an Ex Machina–esque AI woman that only serves you if it remains in her best interests, the threat that any little hiccup from our planet's megacorporations could unlock world-ending carnage is far scarier than the ensuing bloodbath." We're in the midst of a renaissance for both the Alien and Predator franchises, with last year's Alien: Romulus bringing Xenomorphs back to the big screen and the upcoming Predator: Badlands, in theaters this November, teeing up a whole new batch of Alien vs. Predator crossover movies. While Alien: Earth is stand-alone and doesn't seem to have any direct connections with Predator: Badlands, don't be surprised if a stray Easter egg or two spits in your face. How to Watch Alien: Earth Alien: Earth will premiere on the cable channel FX at 8 p.m. ET/PT on August 12. It'll also stream on Hulu (for U.S. subscribers) and Disney+ (for those outside the U.S.) at 8 p.m. ET on August 12. The first two episodes will debut this Tuesday night, with each successive episode premiering weekly until September 23. Below, we have the full release schedule for Alien: Earth.
