Startling vision comes to light as NSW's massive mistake with Latrell laid bare
Vision has emerged of the moment Cleary refused to follow-through with a practice kick at the Blues' captain's run on Tuesday in Perth - the first sign something wasn't right. The NSW halfback felt a 'pop' in his groin during the session, and was later seen 'visualising' his goal-kicks rather than actually hitting them.
Lomax was seen standing with Cleary and practicing his own kicks off the tee, and the Parramatta winger took over the job during Wednesday night's game. But stats from the 2025 NRL season have highlighted the fatal mistake NSW made in opting for Lomax ahead of Latrell Mitchell or Stephen Crichton.

Lomax has kicked 18 goals from 23 attempts this year at 78 per cent. It's a respectable figure, but it actually should have put him as the Blues' fourth-choice kicker.
Cleary has kicked a staggering 40 out of 44 attempts (91 per cent), while Mitchell is 22 out of 26 (85 per cent) and Crichton is 36 out of 43 (84 per cent). The stats show Mitchell and Crichton were both arguably better options than Lomax, whose kicking percentage declined in his last few seasons with the Dragons.

It's not known whether coach Laurie Daley would have had a say in who replaced Cleary as the Blues' goal-kicker, but it's more likely the players decided amongst themselves. It might be a case of Mitchell and Crichton not wanting the extra responsibility, but that would be hard to justify seeing as they both captain their teams at club level.
If someone simply had a look at the stats and figured out who's been kicking them better, it might have resulted in Mitchell or Crichton getting the nod over Lomax. In all fairness to Lomax, he was kicking them sweetly in last year's Origin series. He nailed five out of seven in Game 2, and three out of three in the decider (including a number from the sideline).
But the cold-hard facts are NSW scored more tries in the 26-24 loss on Wednesday night (five to Queensland's four), but Lomax only converted two of them. Lomax also missed a sitter in Game 1 after Cleary gave up the kicking duties following three misses of his own.
It didn't cost the Blues in the series opener, but it certainly did on Wednesday night. While none of Lomax's three misses were easy, it reinforced the fact that goal-kicking is such an important factor.
And Phil Gould highlighted that on Wednesday night. "In the end they've been beaten on goal-kicking," the former NSW coach said on Channel 9. "That's what it was. They scored four tries in the second half and kicked one conversion ... Queensland had the benefit of a penalty in the first half and that's been the difference."

Whether or not Lomax retains the kicking duties for Game 3 remains to be seen. Cleary has declared he'll be right for the Panthers' next game in Round 17 against the Bulldogs, which would put him on track for the Origin decider. But the extent of his groin injury hasn't come to light, and there's every chance he'll need a stint on the sidelines.

'Dream of mine': Tongan star flags switch to play for Kangaroos in Ashes
With a number of players choosing to represent other nations ahead of the Kangaroos, coach Kevin Walters has finally received some good news. Tongan international Keaon Koloamatangi has flagged his interest in switching to the Kangaroos, and could be a huge boost for Australia in the Ashes series later this year. Payne Haas has already made the decision to switch to Samoa, while Stefano Utoikamanu has declared he'll remain loyal to Tonga. Tino Fa'asuamaleaui is reportedly leaning towards playing in the Ashes before switching to Samoa at a later date, while Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Kotoni Staggs are also said to be weighing up a move to represent Samoa and Tonga respectively. But Walters received a potential boost on Thursday night Koloamatangi said he'd put his hand up to represent Australia if called upon. The South Sydney forward has played 10 Tests for Tonga, honouring his father who was born in Tonga. The 27-year-old was born in Sydney to an Australian mother, meaning he is eligible to play for either country in Test matches. He revealed to AAP on Thursday night he's keen to represent his mother. "My mum's Australian and my dad's Tongan, so playing for the Kangaroos is a dream of mine as well, as was Tonga," he said. 'Cannot be ignored': Michael Ennis calls out glaring truth about Latrell Mitchell
Michael Ennis and Warren Smith have both declared that Jye Gray must remain as the Rabbitohs' starting fullback over Latrell Mitchell - not only for the rest of this season but for 2026 as well. Gray was superb again on Thursday night as Souths thrashed the Dragons 40-0. The diminutive fullback made a staggering 353 running metres from 31 carries, scoring a try and breaking three tackles. It was just 17 metres shy of the all-time record for most run metres in a single game (370) - set by Joey Manu last season. The Rabbitohs have now won seven out of 14 games when Gray has started at fullback in 2025. With Mitchell in the No.1 jersey, the Bunnies are just 2-5 this year - albeit against some higher-ranked opposition. Mitchell missed five weeks with a quad injury between Rounds 18 and 22, and played left centre when he made his return against the Titans in Round 23. But his return only lasted one game, and he's missed the last two weeks with a pinched nerve in his back. All up he's only played 11 out of a possible 23 games so far this year. Gray has been much more durable, playing 17 games at either fullback, five-eighth or off the bench. The Bunnies have the bye in Round 26 before a clash with the Roosters in the final round of the regular season. Coach Wayne Bennett is hopeful of having Mitchell back for one last game before their season ends, but he'll have to make a tricky call as to what position he plays. Michael Ennis says Jye Gray's form 'cannot be ignored' Speaking in commentary during Thursday night's game, Ennis and Smith declared there's no way Bennett can shift Gray. "If Latrell does return, surely he stays at left centre where he was a couple of weeks ago," Smith said. Ennis said: "You cannot ignore Jye Gray. He had four try-saves last week (against Parramatta). He had a try and another try tonight. I think Gray stays at fullback and Latrell goes back to left centre for sure." Smith added: "I guess the bigger question is, do they begin 2026 in that formation?" Ennis responded: "That will be fascinating." Crucially, the Rabbitohs face the prospect of losing Gray to a rival club if he doesn't get the playing time he deserves. The 21-year-old is believed to be on the radar of the Perth Bears for their inaugural season in 2027, and comes off contract with Souths at the end of 2026. Tellingly, a poll of over 50,000 Yahoo readers shows the overwhelming majority believe Mitchell should be playing centre rather than fullback. Latrell Mitchell could help Alex Johnston make history Bennett has usually preferred Mitchell at fullback, and turned him from a centre to a No.1 when he signed him from the Roosters back in 2020. But the goalposts have changed in recent times, and Mitchell has shown he's a gun centre when playing there for NSW and Australia. Johnston bagged a try on Thursday night to take his career tally to 210 - just two shy of Ken Irvine's all-time record. But it could have been more on Thursday night if Mitchell was playing inside him. Johnston's record with Mitchell at left centre is much better than without, and there were a number of instances on Thursday night when Tallis Duncan (a second-rower playing centre) went himself instead of trying to set up Johnston.
