Cork nursing home had €11.6m of liabilities

A statement of affairs for Aperee Living Belgooly, prepared last year but only recently submitted to the Companies Registration Office, shows its main asset was the purpose-built nursing home itself, valued at €1.8m.
The home in Belgooly is now closed but was part of the big chains established by investment manager David O'Shea of the BlackBee Group.
At one point, Mr O'Shea had ambitions to build a €250m portfolio of homes, through the Aperee group, but both the chain itself and BlackBee ran into crisis.
The filing for Aperee Living Belgooly shows the company had gross liabilities of €11.6m. The accounts show the bulk of that was owed to a mix of unsecured creditors, including related companies.
The total owed to preferred creditors was made up of rates owed to Cork County Council, redundancy funding owed to the Department of Social Protection and money owed to Revenue; and added up to €569,000.
A statement of affairs for a company that is in liquidation sets out details of any assets that can be realised and all money owned at the point when it ceased trading.
John Healy, of Healy Kirby Chartered Accounts, was appointed as a liquidator to the company last year. Separately a receiver, Gerard Murphy, was appointed over the secured assets of the firm.
The Belgooly property is one of five Aperee nursing homes that were brought to the market last October that agent Cohalan Downing has agreed to sell to three different purchasers for a combined price above the €9m which was expected to be realised.
Last month, Gerard Murphy launched a second sale process to dispose of four of the other nursing homes connected to the chain, targeting proceeds of around €8m.
The combined proceeds of the sales will go some way towards recouping cash for the many investors who invested in the chain through funds managed by entities linked to Mr O'Shea. His Cork-based BlackBee was one of the most active loan note promoters in Munster and by 2014 had raised more than €150m for various projects from a mix of thousands of relatively small investors.

Italian regulator slaps €1m fine on Shein's Dublin-based European online company

Italy's competition authority (AGCM) imposed a €1m fine on China-founded online fast fashion retailer Shein on Monday for misleading customers about the environmental impact of its products. It is Shein's second financial sanction by a European competition authority in little more than a month, after France fined the company €40m on July 3 over fake discounts and misleading environmental claims. The Italian fine was imposed on Infinite Styles Services Co. Limited, a Dublin-based company that operates Shein's website in Europe, following an investigation by AGCM launched last September. In a statement, Shein said it has cooperated fully with AGCM and took immediate action to address the concerns raised. AGCM said the environmental sustainability and social responsibility messages on Shein's website "were sometimes vague, generic, and/or overly emphatic, and in other cases omitted and misleading." Shein's claims on circular system design and product recyclability "were found to be false or at the very least confusing", and the green credentials of its 'evoluSHEIN by design' collection were overstated, the regulator said. Shein promotes the 'evoluSHEIN by design' collection as clothes made using more sustainable and responsible manufacturing. AGCM said consumers could be misled to think that the collection was made with materials that are fully recyclable, "a fact that, considering the fibres used and currently existing recycling systems, is untrue". Shein, in its statement, said: "We have strengthened our internal review processes and improved our website to ensure that all environmental claims are clear, verifiable, and compliant with regulations." AGCM also took issue with Shein's "vague and generic" commitments to cut greenhouse emissions by 25% by 2030 and to net zero by 2050, noting that Shein's emissions increased in 2023 and 2024. The Italian regulator said its overall assessment was influenced by an "increased duty of care" falling on Shein, "because it operates in a highly polluting sector and with highly polluting methods". AGCM is in charge of consumer protection as well as competition.

Nintendo reports robust early sales of Switch 2, keeps full-year forecast

Nintendo sold more than six million units of the Switch 2 in the seven weeks following its June launch, the gaming company said today, pointing to strong early demand. The successor to the hit home-portable Switch went on sale in the midst of US President Donald Trump's trade war, testing Nintendo's supply chain management. "The six million units sold are a testament to the incredible pent-up demand for an update of the first Switch," said Serkan Toto, founder of the Kantan Games consultancy. The company provided the early sales volumes in an earnings update and said it was keeping its forecast of selling 15 million Switch 2 units in the financial year ending March 2026. Kyoto-based Nintendo said operating profit grew 4% to 56.9 billion yen ($378m) in the April-June quarter, beating analysts' estimates. It said US tariff measures and other changes in the market environment had no significant impact on its current earnings forecast. The Switch 2 was launched on June 5 with titles including "Mario Kart World" and upgraded "The Legend of Zelda" series with better graphics. Nintendo sold 8.67 million Switch 2 software units during the quarter with "Mario Kart World" frequently bundled with the device. "Donkey Kong Bananza" was released on July 17 and has a score of 92 out of 100 on reviews aggregator Metacritic, indicating universal acclaim. "Nintendo must use the momentum and the absence of blockbuster GTA 6 this year to carry the Switch 2 through to the holidays," said Toto of Kantan Games. "Grand Theft Auto VI" was slated to launch this year and was expected to provide a boost to consoles such as Sony's PlayStation 5 but its release has been delayed to 2026.
