Yankees ace Gerrit Cole makes 20 throws off flat ground as he recovers from Tommy John surgery
'It felt really good today,' Cole said before New York opened a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium. 'I was fairly accurate and I had a good time.'
Cole began his throwing program five months after getting an internal brace inserted into his elbow in an operation by Los Angeles Dodgers head team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
The normal rehabilitation time is about 14 months and Cole had been building up to getting off flat ground for the past few weeks. Cole said his initial progressing will last for a few months before he can off a mound, and then he will get shut down and expects a normal offseason.
'It's a big one, first day throwing,' Cole said. 'I've been building up to it for a few weeks. So It's nice to get outside and get it accomplished and have it go well.'
A 34-year-old right-hander with a 153-80 career record and 3.18 ERA over 317 starts, Cole's arm initially was in a cast following the surgery and then a brace. The brace was removed in mid-April and Cole had been undergoing about 90 minutes to two hours of rehab.
Cole has thrown 1,954 innings over 12 major league seasons, plus an additional 133 1/3 innings in 22 postseason starts. His procedure was reconstruction of the ligament with an internal brace, which is designed to promote stability.
Cole is signed to a $324 million, nine-year contract through 2028, and is in the dugout for home games. He also joined a YES Network broadcast for a few innings during a game against the Los Angeles Angels on June 17.
'Excited for him,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. 'He's done a good job with the rehab and this is one of those cool markers along the way that is significant to hit. So excited for him.'
Cole's 2024 season debut was delayed until June 19 because of nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow. He went 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA in 17 starts for New York and was 1-0 with a 2.17 ERA in five postseason starts.
Cole went for tests after allowing a pair of home runs in his second spring training start this year, against Minnesota on March 6.

Carlos Correa hit an RBI single to help the Astros to the victory after they were swept in Boston to start the month. It was his first home game since rejoining the team in a blockbuster trade from the Twins. Houston starter Cristian Javier (1-0) had a solid outing in his return after sitting out more than 14 months following Tommy John surgery. He allowed two hits and two runs in the first inning before settling down and giving up just one single over the next four innings. Alex Bregman's two-run home run in the first inning gave Boston an early lead in his first game in Houston since leaving the Astros this offseason. Houston scored three runs in the third to take the lead and got a two-run shot from McCormick in the fourth and a two-run homer from Urías in the fifth to make it 7-2. But the Red Sox scored four runs with two outs in the seventh inning, highlighted by home runs from Abraham Toro and Roman Anthony, to get within 1. Bregman singled after that, but Jarren Duran grounded out to end the inning. Connor Wong doubled off Enyel De Los Santos with two outs in the ninth inning and Bennett Sousa took over and struck out Anthony to end it and collect his fourth save. Boston's Garrett Crochet (13-5) yielded seven hits and tied a season-high with five runs in a season-low four innings to snap a nine-game winning streak and give him his first loss since May 26. Urías, who was acquired from Baltimore at the deadline, finished a triple shy of the cycle to tie a season high in hits. Key moment Sousa's strikeout of Anthony in the ninth. Texans' DeMeco Ryans provides update on TE Brevin Jordan following injury
The Houston Texans are hopeful that tight end Brevin Jordan will have a similar outlook to defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson, but optimism isn't high following Monday's practice. Jordan, fresh off recovering from a torn ACL suffered last September, suffered a lower leg injury during practice and had to be carted off the field. The scene was emotional, as Jordan was seen visibly upset while being carted off for further evaluation. "Unfortunately, we saw Brevin go down with an injury," Ryans said following practice. "We will continue to evaluate 'Brev' and see where he is. It's tough for everybody to see Brevin going down, knowing how much work he's put in to get back to this point of playing football and how excited he was to get back to playing football. So, just praying for him to have a successful return.' While trying to go up to catch a pass from C.J. Stroud in traffic, but when he came down, he fell awkwardly and did not get up. According to Houston Chronicle's Jonathan M. Alexander, Jordan sat there in shock after being unable to move. A couple of his teammates went to check on him before more players came over to comfort the veteran tight end. Soon enough, the scene became silent as Jordan began to sob uncontrollably. Multiple reporters stated that Jordan screamed "NO!" before being helped into the cart to be taken back by the medical staff for further evaluation. A 2021 fifth-round pick out of Miami, Jordan had played in 36 games, recording 13 starts, during the Texans' two seasons ahead of Stroud's arrival. He posted 532 receiving yards and five touchdowns before leaving after Week 2's game against the Chicago Bears. Even after his injury, the Texans signed Jordan to a one-year extension worth $2.1 million as he was projected to be a free agent in 2025. He was having a good camp and figured to be a big part of Houston's offense this season under new play-caller Nick Caley. The Texans return to practice on Tuesday morning ahead a joint practice on Thursday against the Carolina Panthers.
