Local artist and art tutor Jaclyn Stuart celebrates ten years since the first solo exhibition of her work in St Andrews with a new show.
In Our Golden Thread Jaclyn explores the themes of brokenness, beauty and restoration. Her art is influenced by the Japanese art of kintsugi and the exhibition includes a mix of watercolour, oil painting and cyanotype photography.
On Saturday May 3 the artist will host a talk and cyanotype demonstration at 2pm. Tickets for this event include a copy of Jaclyn's beautiful 31 page exhibition catalogue.

May 6 marks the first Night Market of the 2025 summer season at Balgove Larder. The market is held in the Steak Barn and showcases the best in local produce.
There is live music, food from local food trucks and Balgove's Steak Barn and Eat Out and mini workshops from Strathyrum Flowers.
A car boot sale is new for 2025's Night Markets, with the focus on preloved, vintage homeware, clothing and jewellery.

The walls of The Fraser Gallery will showcase the work of five female creatives from May 2 to 16.
The South Street Gallery will show vibrant paintings by Janet Keith, Mhairi McGregor RSW, Alison McWhirter, Jackie Philip and Gail Pope, with bright florals, still lives and landscapes all represented.

You Choose is based on the popular children' picture book by Pippa Goodhart and Nick Sharratt.
Nonsense Room Productions have turned the story into a musical show perfect for little theatre-goers. As in the book of the same name, the audience will be able to choose where the story goes by joining in with games and challenges.
The format means that every show is different, with new characters and locations for each performance.
Recommended for children aged 2 to 7.

Dress up in your finest fairy costume and visit the beautiful Botanic Garden in St Andrews for a magical afternoon.
The Pixie Picnic event will be full of fairy-themed crafts and activities suitable for young families available throughout the afternoon.
Later, it will be time to settle down on a picnic blanket for a screening of Epic (U) on the Solar Cinema.
Visitors can bring their own picnic food to enjoy during the screening or buy sandwiches and treats from the Visitor Centre. Don't forget to prepare for the Scottish weather with plenty of cosy layers and blankets for the movie screening.

Kilrymont Rotary's annual classic car show returns to Craigtoun Park on May 25.
Classic cars, motobikes and commercial vehicles can be exhibited for a donation to the Rotary's nominated charities. Visitors can view the cars free of charge and there will also be music, games and competitions to enjoy.
The regular Craigtoun Park attractions will be open for the weekend – usual costs will apply.

Join author Joanne Harris as she returns to the world of Chocolat, her bestselling story of Vianne and her famous chocolaterie.

Osaka Expo to host two sumo events with matches and exhibitions in August
Expo 2025, Osaka, Kansai, Japan is the place to explore the world as well as the latest advancements in science and technology. It's also a fantastic opportunity to experience Japanese culture, as the Expo hosts regular Japan-specific events ranging from a monthly fireworks showcase to an upcoming sumo special. The national sport of Japan, sumo is more than just a battle of physical strength; it's also a competition of mind, technique and discipline. Moreover, the sport is filled with rites and rituals that are deeply symbolic. And for two special days in early August, you'll get to experience all that at the Expo. The Expo Grand Sumo Tournament Sunday August 3, 9am-3pm, at Expo Exhibition Center Wasse The official Grand Sumo Tournament is making an exclusive stop at the Expo to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Japan Sumo Association. This majestic spectacle will bring together 200 sumo wrestlers from the association, including the highest ranked Yokozuna athletes. For this one-day special, you get to witness not only authentic sumo matches but also events not typically seen at a regular tournament. There will be sumo chants, taiko drum performances, public sumo practices with children, sumo technique demonstrations as well as the sacred ring-entering ceremony. The highlight, however, will be the sumo matches: the third division (Makushita) and below grapples at noon, and the top division (Makunouchi) at 2pm. Note that you'll need more than an Expo admission ticket to attend the Expo Grand Sumo Tournament. Numbered tickets will be handed out on the day at 9am from a special reception counter near the Expo Exhibition Center Wasse entrance. Sumo Expo 2025 Monday August 4, 9am-7.30pm, at Expo Exhibition Center Wasse While Sunday revolves around the tournament, the Sumo Expo 2025 on Monday is all about celebrating sumo culture. This time, you can expect to see not just local but also overseas wrestlers. Aside from international and women's sumo matches, you'll be able to explore exhibitions and partake in experiences hosted by the many local sumo associations across Japan. Moreover, if you're curious about how sumo wrestlers build up their enormous frame, check out the sumo food area for a mouthwatering look at chanko stew, sumo wrestler bento and more body-building dishes. Of course, make sure you pop by the sumo experience area to get a hands-on lesson on how to be a wrestler, from learning the special rites on how to enter the ring respectfully to fighting an opponent. This Chicago bar was just named the #1 bar in the world
Chicago has a lot to celebrate this month. Not only did we make Time Out's list of the best cities for nightlife in the country, but Kumiko just got named the best bar in the world at the 19th annual Spirited Awards in New Orleans. Of course, this comes as no surprise to anyone who has ever sipped a cocktail there. Kumiko is one of Chicago's most beloved (and best) dining experiences, seamlessly blending the precision of Japanese cocktail culture with Midwestern hospitality. Nestled in the West Loop, the intimate, minimalist bar is led by the incomparable Julia Momosé, who opened Kumiko in 2018 alongside local restaurateurs Cara and Noah Sandoval. Kumiko offers an omakase-style tasting menu for both cocktails and food, and each course arrives with intention, storytelling and flavors that linger. It has been recognized as special from the start, earning a Michelin star in 2019 for original chef Mariya Russell, making her the first Black woman to be awarded a Michelin star. In addition to World's Best Bar, Kumiko also won Best Restaurant Bar. Also honored at the Spirited Awards were Sip and Guzzle in New York City (Best New U.S. Cocktail Bar), Trick Dog in San Francisco (Best U.S. Cocktail Bar) and Phoenix's Little Rituals at the Residence Inn/Courtyard by Marriott (Best U.S. Hotel Bar). A huge free Japanese food fest from Smorgasburg is happening this weekend
The Williamsburg coastline will look a little different on Saturday, August 2, when local food festival Smorgasburg partners with Suntory, Japan's premium malt beer, to present " Japan Meets Brooklyn – Matsuri," a one-day celebration of Japanese food, drinks and culture. The free event will take over the outdoor food market's 90 Kent Avenue space from 11am to 6pm this Saturday. The matsuri (Japanese for 'festival') will build on Smorgasburg's intense fanbase—it is the country's largest weekly open-air food market, after all—to present six special guest vendors and a handful of activities designed to bring Brooklyn a dash of the Rising Sun. Suntory is going out for the event, with a garden section doling out their signature Kami-Awa 'Creamy Foam' pour and an exclusive curated omakase set, pairing a tasting of three beers with snacks from three vendors. Need some carbs beyond that beer-filled bless? The fair will have plenty of freshly baked buns, with stands from Greenpoint's Taku Sando, matcha and onigirazu (sushi sandwiches) from Tokuyamatcha, and temaki sets and assorted sandos from a partnership between Nami Nori and Postcard Bakery. Habble will provide karaage chicken and Wagyu beef "sushi," and the sweet-toothed can take refuge with kakigori (shaved ice) from Tonchin US, or head to Let's Bounce, purveyors of New York's bounciest cheesecakes and cream puffs. But it is all fun and games, with Candy5NYC making their popular live candy on-site, local artist Hiroshi Masuda drawing portraits, and leading calligraphy workshops. Those looking to take in a show can find the New York Sumo Club, which will demo some of their impressive moves to the sound of OMNY Taiko 's live Taiko drum performances, or Seoul 69 mixing an all-vinyl Japanese City Pop set.
