Bibiano Fernandes dedicates SAFF U19 victory to Arunachal fans
Yupia (Arunachal Pradesh) [India] May 20 (ANI): After two months of toil, it all boiled down to the penalty shootout. However, the calm demeanour with which the India U19 men's national team conducted themselves during the most nerve-wracking moment of the SAFF U19 Championship final against Bangladesh brought out the character that the boys have, according to the official website of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Head coach Bibiano Fernandes was all praised for his boys after they were crowned the SAFF U19 champions at the Golden Jubilee Stadium on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
'We knew it would not be an easy final by any stretch of imagination,' said Fernandes at the post-match press conference. 'Bangladesh showed their mettle as well, coming back from a goal down. But our boys exhibited tremendous character to keep fighting for the 90 minutes and beyond,' Bibiano Fernandes said
'We must also appreciate how Bangladesh fought back. I think they showed how good a side they are. It was an entertaining game, and at the end, we're happy that we came out as champions,' said Fernandes, who claimed his fourth junior SAFF title on Sunday night.'
While the final boiled down to a nail-biting penalty shootout, Fernandes was quietly confident in the Blue Colts' abilities. 'I was always positive for the penalties because I have full faith in my players. I knew that our goalkeeper Suraj (Singh Aheibam) is good at saving penalties. He's been amazing at the training sessions, when we practiced spot-kicks. We knew he would make us proud,' said Fernandes. 'The job for the rest of the boys was to put the ball in the net.'
While the India U19S showed quiet confidence in tense situations, their 48-year-old coach attributed much of the mentality to the support from the stands.
'Arunachal Pradesh was amazing for us. I've never seen so many fans turn up for a junior game anywhere in India. We will certainly remember this for the rest of our lives,' he said. 'The crowd was amazing, and the boys enjoyed playing in front of them.'
'I would like to dedicate this victory to the fans in Arunachal Pradesh, they were truly amazing. They pushed us and supported us all the way. They made us play the way we did. I'm sure this will motivate more youngsters to dream of playing for the national team one day, and we will have more players like Omang (Dodum) come through,' he said.
The Blue Colts will now regroup and begin their preparations for the AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers, to be held next year.
'India has ample talent. If we do good development, we will one day see India qualify for the World Cup, that remains the dream, as always,' said Fernandes. (ANI)

"Siraj is very, very capable": Bharat Arun on India fast bowler
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 7 (ANI): With India heading into what's set to be a high voltage five-match Test series in England, former bowling coach Bharat Arun has recalled some of those tactical things which could decide the fate of the Indian pacers in the swinging conditions in England. Discussing the evolution and impact of Mohammed Siraj with Revsportz, Arun took a deep dive into how conditions and angles could magnify or reduce the effectiveness of a bowler. Arun highlighted Siraj's 2021 performances, particularly how his natural angle worked well against left-handers. Arun said while speaking to Boria Majumdar on Revsportz, 'Especially when bowling to left-handers, he had an actual angle which was leaving them.' 'But he tried to cut out that angle by going round the wicket to them. And your effectiveness comes down, especially when there is a slight movement off the wicket,' he added. He pointed out a specific moment at Lord's where tactical adjustment made a significant difference. 'Especially at Lord's, where there is a slope. And if you're using it when you're bowling from the Pavilion End, and if you're going to be bowling round the wicket, you don't get the advantage of the slope,' he said. 'So, just at tea time, I remember asking him to go over the wicket and bowl. The line should be the leg of the left-hander. So, natural angle that leaves him, it will be leaving him on off stump,' he noted. Arun says that change paid off. He described Siraj as 'very, very capable' and implied that he might be one of the most important bowlers in the upcoming series due to his awareness of conditions and grasp of angles. The former India bowling coach also spoke highly of Arshdeep Singh's potential, especially in seam-friendly English conditions. 'I was particularly impressed with Arshdeep during the IPL. He could move the white ball both ways,' Arun said. He also emphasized the role of the Dukes ball in England, often considered a paradise for seamers. 'Probably the Dukes is the most bowler-friendly ball in world cricket. In terms of seam, in terms of the shine, the conditions in England are so conducive,' he remarked. Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi leads delegation to engage with Commonwealth Sport on 2030 games bid
London [UK], June 7 (ANI): A senior state delegation led by Harsh Sanghavi, Minister Sports, Government of Gujarat met officials from Commonwealth Sport as part of ongoing efforts to deepen understanding around the Commonwealth Games 2030 bid framework. The delegation also constituted representatives from Commonwealth Games Association India and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, according to a release from HM Office Gujarat. The proposals are expected to be submitted by August 31 and a decision on the selection of host city shall be made by Commonwealth Sport in November. Over two days of focused engagements in London, the Indian delegation participated in comprehensive discussions and presented the preparations undertaken till now with respect to the bid. The Commonwealth Sport team mentioned that the team will provide full support and collaborate with the interested host cities towards preparations of the proposals. During his remarks, Sanghavi mentioned, 'We believe that the Games of 2030 should be rooted in sustainability, community participation and above all athlete experience. Athletes are the heart of the Games and every decision we take will be shaped by their comfort, their needs and their performance.' Emphasizing on importance of legacy for the games, Minister Sports also said that, 'We are designing a model for hosting the Games that focuses on long-term impact rather than short-term spectacle using existing venues wherever possible and ensuring that the Games leave behind a meaningful legacy for local communities.' During the interactions, P T Usha, President, Commonwealth Games Association India mentioned that, 'India has a shared belief with Commonwealth Sport that sport has the power to unite nations, inspire youth, and foster social change. India stands ready to partner with the Commonwealth Games Federation to craft a legacy-oriented, future- focused edition of the Games in 2030.' The meeting focused on gaining insights into the overall planning expectations, governance standards and key milestones involved in the bid process. The engagement reflects India's intent to align with global best practices while continuing to engage constructively with all stakeholders as part of the ongoing process. During the discussions, both sides broadly exchanged views on key elements typically expected in a Games bid proposal, including the overarching vision and legacy ambitions, governance and institutional support, sustainability considerations, transport strategy, sports program, accessibility and planning around infrastructure, athlete services, and Games-time operations. While details remain under development, the focus was on aligning with international benchmarks and ensuring readiness across critical domains. (ANI)
