After a year at UTEP, Krishna moved to UNLV, where the coaches did not just guide, but they held Olympic heritage. Krishna describes her head coach and former Olympic gold medallist in 100m, Carmelita Jeter, as someone who preaches independence. 'Their backing has helped me so much, and has made me a better person,' she said. It has helped in the way Krishna has performed so far in 2025.
Earlier, she broke the national record for indoor shot put with a throw of 16.03m at the Mountain West Indoor track and field championship in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is keen on continuing her purple patch. 'After the outdoor meet in Eugene, I will be working to get myself a spot in both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games next year,' she added. Krishna has expressed her desire to represent India soon after she meets her academic commitments. 'That is the goal,' she added.

Land acquisition for sports hub in final phase
Ahmedabad: With Gujarat aiming for the 2036 Olympics, work on the ambitious Sardar Patel Sports Enclave at Motera is moving forward rapidly. Spread across 650 acres around the Narendra Modi Stadium, the mega sports hub will be developed in two phases at a cost of Rs 5,050 crore. Officials said land acquisition was in its final stage. Of the 814 structures marked for removal in the designated zone, 665 have already been demolished. Residents displaced by the project are being offered alternative housing within 1–3 km of the site. The Ahmedabad collector's office is acquiring land from organisations such as the Bhartiya Seva Samaj, Sadashiv Pragya Mandal, and Sant Asaram Ashram. While talks for most plots are nearly complete, the issue of the Asaram Ashram land is currently sub judice. Work is simultaneously underway to clear a planned 24-metre-wide road, which requires removal of 378 structures — 283 of which have already been demolished. In addition, 292 structures have been cleared from the land earmarked for the proposed Aquatics Centre. The enclave will house world-class facilities in two phases: Package 1 (Rs 2,250 crore) will include development of an aquatics centre for which tenders will be floated in Nov, with a completion deadline of Nov 2028. Under package 2 (Rs 2,800 crore) construction of an indoor arena, tennis centre, National Institute of Sports Excellence, and housing for athletes will be included. Tenders for this will be issued in Dec, with completion targeted by Dec 2028. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by December 2028, aligning with India's Olympic bid timeline. Abdulla Aboobacker eyes season's best to boost Worlds hopes
CHENNAI: Triple jumper could not have asked for a better start to the season, leaping 17.19m in his first meet – Indian Open jumps competition. While he has not breached the 17m mark since, he has done enough to remain in contention for a spot at the World Championships, by winning a few competitions. 'I am looking to get to my season-best mark here, which will boost my confidence ahead of the World Championships. With Praveen Chithravel and other top triple jumpers competing here, I hope the competition will be tough and we push each other,' Aboobacker said after his practice session on Tuesday. The last time Aboobacker competed in Chennai was at the inter-state competition in 2022, where he came close to his personal best of 17.19m. He went on to have a great year, clinching silver at the Commonwealth Games later. Aboobacker had hoped to break new ground this season, but things did not go as planned. 'The season started with a lot of motivation. I believed I could reach 17.40m or even 17.50m, but unfortunately, it did not work out,' he added. If Aboobacker qualifies for the Worlds, it will mark his third appearance at the global extravaganza. He struggled in his previous outings, failing to reach the final on both occasions. The triple jumper said that adapting to foreign conditions, especially different tracks, is difficult. 'In India, we mainly train on synthetic tracks, but at top-level competitions like the World Championships and Olympics, they use Mondo tracks. Sprinters can adjust, but athletes in events like pole vault, triple jump, and long jump find it difficult to adapt. 'Jumping on a Mondo track is like jumping on a mat. The speed is very good, but the track is very hard. I get to train on a Mondo track for only one week before any big event, which is not enough. I have spent many years trying to prove myself at the world level and I do not want to see my hard work getting wasted in a few attempts. I have requested the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to install Mondo tracks, and I hope more tracks will be available in the future to help young athletes. '
